    Do the long and short loops, I just did a short relaxing two night backpacking trip last week, first night in Bee Island campsite then ending in Mossy, I hate the smell of that sulfur water and packed in all my water. Lots of hogs in the park and they are tearing up the trails. Same type of damage 27 years ago when I did the 39 mile loop. Great place to visit

      Then you weren't looking. There are gators ON the University of Florida campus. I can go nature trails and gators will be sunbathing IN the trial and you have to walk around them (and no, they don't care that you're there). Swamps, rivers, wetlands....they're everyone if you're not at the beach or if you step outside the concrete jungle shitholes like Orlando.

    Hi Kelly! Been going to Myakka since I was a kid. Might suggest you go to Bee Island and then off to Prairie. Go after a cold front goes through. Plenty of water after the rains. Bee Island just re did their well when I was out there two years ago. Great views from Prairie. Also head up to Torreya State Park in Late Feb. Camp down on the Bluff over looking the river the first night. Torreya Challenge is a good loop with interesting terrain. Hikers come to Torreya to prepare for the AT. Lots of clear creeks. I used to take that trail to Deep Hole, but haven't been out there in over ten years. So it's interesting seeing how it looks now. Seems like much less vegetation now. I know they do controlled burning out there and that took down some trees. That entrance to Deep Hole looked like it had been cleared out. I didn't see much of the beautiful old oaks that used to form tree tunnels at a few spots along the trail. The gators would run if I got w/i 100 feet, but you're right ... the danger is taking one by surprise.

      Gators rarely attack. They don't care that you're there most of the time. A handful of attacks and dumb movie scenes cause the same irrational fear of gators as people have for sharks when the reality is the likelihood of being attacked is very low.

    • @johndonahue4777
      @johndonahue4777 5 месяцев назад

      I saw clip of a medium sized alligator spot a piglet near the pond/riverbank and it crept out onto land towards the pig. The pig was distracted and didn't spot the gator until there wasn't time to get away. The gator ran after the piglet and got it. I wouldn't get near those things.

    I'm trying to think how much water I would need for a 38 mile hike in a hot and humid landscape with no water source. I would guess a gallon a day for 3 days for me. I'd probably bring an extra gallon to be safe as well. So that would be 33 pounds just for water.
