What an amazing dog Nell is. She is very clever. This breed of dog is probably the most intelligent of all breeds and they follow commands perfectly. Shepherds could not manage to do their work without the help of these sheep dogs.

I just love that moment at 1:57 when the sheep stop and look around, as though to say "is he still following us?" :D

I know absolutely nothing about shepherding, but I realized while watching it that I felt very much like I would if I were watching someone play (and succeed at) a challenging video game. I suspect the dogs doing this get a similar kind of enjoyment/satisfaction that a gamer gets when successfully tackling a difficult level.

Andres Restrepo That's a great way of looking at it actually. I have a young collie and she's the most demon sheepdog and can herd an open field full of sheep into a small pen like she wrote the book and I've wondered whether she really gets a "gamer" head on. Then two minutes later she's rolling ecstatically on an empty snail shell or a pine cone and I have no idea what might be going on there.

Andres & Charlotte, indeed fascinating how sheepdogs have been "programmed" for this & clearly relish the game... sounds like afterwards your dog was "blowing off steam" while scratching an itch (horses do this, too). Years ago we had a couple Shelties who--living in town & having nothing else to herd--would occasionally take to trying to "herd" our black & white male cat. The kitty (an otherwise mellow & affable character) would only take so much of this before turning around & smacking them on the nose to discourage their unwelcome attentions (it worked). :)

Those were the days, Nell also won the 2007 and might have won the 2009 but was beat out of the finals by another dog that Darrell Duncan had named Maggie …. both dogs were super sweet.

Might want to check out a USBCHA sheepdog trial to see trialing that better reflects what these dogs and their handlers are capable of doing.

I got a border collie and mcnab for athletic companion dogs, we do lots of frisbee and hiking. Someday i am going to learn herding. I wish it was more accessible for those not born into it. IMO it really is one of, if not the highest, forms of dog handling.
