What strikes me about these veteran directors like C.B. DeMille, John Ford, Ruben Mamoulian, Michael Curtiz and others is once the technology of Technicolor was available to them they didn't just use it, they USED it! They didn't just throw it in the camera and went to work, as you put it so well they created animated oil paintings and masterpieces at that! A whole new world opened up for these men and they made full use of it.
Nowadays the color is just taken for granted. A big "So what?"
There aren't and haven't been any films in the past several years I've wanted to spend money to see. An era's truly come and gone.

No, he doesn't mention Thera. He speaks of, "A mountain beyond the cataracts, which spewed red mud, and poisoned the water." Cataracts are rapids or falls. He's talking about a landslide or something similar on the upper Nile, far south of Goshen or the Delta. Although some modern scholars do attribute the historical basis for Exodus to the Thera eruption, and I think that is very likely, that is not what Yul Brynner's line here means.

I’m actually Muslim. I attended a catholic private school for middle school (6-8) as the middle schools around my house were not really safe. Even though our religions are different I realized my classmates and I classmates believed in so many of the same things and they treated me no different from them. I was the only Muslim girl in the whole school but they truly became my family and I became even more religious, even though I’m not Christian. I think it’s amazing that these people brought me closer to God even though I’m different. We watched this movie in my religion class and I loved it so much. Every part matched up with the stories in Islam from the Pharaoh to Moses parting the Red Sea and the bush and everything. I love this movie and may God bless you all 💚

    5:43
"We fear no army of the Earth, but can we fight plagues with swords?"
That line has struck me ever since. As I have been (and still am) fascinated with history, I too have shown much interest with militaries. Their weapons and equipment, the reasons why they are armed and fight, how they fight, and the battles of the past and of today changing the world in every way, big and small. And as a force with such devices and goals, as shown in real life and in fiction, the military is power.
And yet here they are powerless against the plagues, whose nature is different than that of any human combatant. Their brute strength cannot work against them. It is humbling.
It also shows the character Pentaur (played by Henry Wilcoxon) being realistic. Despite commanding such power he knows what it cannot do and acknowledges that.

And yet God did not protect Israel at all when Rome kicked their ass or when the Babylonians carried them off to slavery. This is a myth. Not reality. There were never Hebrew slaves in ancient Egypt. NONE of this happened. The Egyptians kept very good records. None of this happened. There was no pharaoh killed in the Red Sea trying to overtake 4 million fleeing Hebrew slaves. It just did not happen. This film chooses not to show Pharaoh being drowned in the sea, probably because DeMille wanted to create the impression his movie was 'historical'. The Bible does not bear this out: "But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, (Psa 136:15 NKJ)" plainly states that Pharaoh died with his army. But the Egyptian records say no such thing occurred and no other nation records such a ridiculous event. Think about it, there's Pharaoh and his army being blocked by twin pillars of fire, and then he decides to pursue the Hebrews into to a magically created dry patch in the Red Sea, and all Pharaoh has to say is "Better to die in battle with a god then to live in shame." A pharaoh would never have said such a thing. Dying in battle against a god is a waste of an army. Did Egypt have such an army to waste?

Cecil DeMille has made one in 1927. This is his second, made in 1956 when he was 74. He put everything that he learned in his illustrious career into this one. It was his lifetime ambition that became his lifetime achievement. It is a masterpiece in every department. Script was a beauty ("Speak my son"); editing was unbeatable; music was excellent. Most importantly, the acting of Yul Brynner, Edward Robinson, Anne Baxter, Yvonne De Carlo and Cedric Hardwicke (as Pharaoh Seti) trumpets all. The best movie ever made.
