  • In this episode, the Backwoods Boys present a step-by-step explanation of how to create their favourite fisher set. Although the same equipment is used for both fisher and marten, the methods for trapping these related species differ greatly. This set is quick and easy to make, and can be used nearly anywhere on a trapline.
Building this set on/near a beaver house is especially effective.

We cover a lot of area and find that pole sets are more trouble than they are worth. We have done them in the past and they didn't make it more likely to catch marten or fisher, and take several times longer to put a set out that way. Their main advantage is keeping animals off the ground and away from voles, and we just don't tend to have vole problems here for some reason. It is much faster to travel dozens of miles and throw these sets out, and we still catch pretty well everything that walks by. Plus in a lot of the really drowned out tamarack bogs, it can be tough to find good trees to use for pole sets exactly where you want to set, so this frees us up to throw out sets wherever we want. Pole sets are definitely popular in a lot of places, but most of the old timers around here just do it this way, and switch to pole sets in the odd year when voles get especially bad. Both work well depending on area; this is just a much more efficient use of time on our trapline we find, with no noticeable difference in catch rate.
