Design-wise, I also like the decision taken to remove the visors from the imperial foot soldiers, it made them seem less mechanical and (literally) faceless without taking away from the Empire’s menace.

Strange. I actually think the game version is sadder because you weren't expecting the enemy sniper's shot. The way the game makes Isara get shot is more realistic because it just happened out of nowhere, and from the point of view of your squad, adding more emphasis on the loss of a comrade.

If we're gonna be realistic, I'd want to take out the gunner first (which could be Welkin but the commander is rarely also the gunner in tanks) because a tank without legs can still fight. A tank that's been declawed of it's main weapon can't hurt you. An immobilized tank still has eyes that can see better than you and a gun that can blow you to smithereens once you're spotted.
The Allied Powers but now said tank has a drastically shorter list of viable roles, essentially take out a tanks treads or in the case it's driver and you have essentially turned the greatest threat to your troops into target practice for your mortar teams, not to say there's no viability in targeting the Gunner but consider this, a tank that can't fire is still a two ton brick wall that can crush your encampments, a tank that can't move while still as much a threat is much less useful to your opponent.
In the Anime, during Episode 18 (August Rain), Rosie tells more of the story after Isara was shot...she did not die just yet....she survived about another 2 minutes as Rosie tried to save her

i consider myself a trope savvy person i can pick up really easily when something is moving in the direction of killing of a character in an emotional way. with isara though i didn't see it coming, i was just too attached because she was way too precious, like welkin and her were some of the best siblings with a fun dynamic, both were outright weirdos and i loved them for it. Mr. VЭGНЅ it's like the polital incorrect joke: if a Nazi soldier has in front a jew and a black person, which one will kill first? the jew or the black person?
I know it's been a year but I think I can answer your question. Isara in the game was shot by a sharp shooter not a sniper, this is evidenced by the fact that Isara was hit and the shot heard at the same time, as opposed to hit before heard as is common with snipers. This means that the shot was fired from one of the approaching solders and given the angle of approach, a shot on Welkin would have been obscured by the rock face and/ or the Edelweiss.
Actual death? Game is better. Yes she dies surrounded, but her last words were ones of regret and sorrow. The fallout after her death? Anime is better, the game kinda sweeps it under the rug after the funeral and we don't see Welkin's breakdown.
I tend to like the anime version better; it shows that even the imperial soldiers can make mistakes; even their snipers can end up losing their grip, their sanity, their breath: in the anime, the shot was meant for rosie, but the sniper you could tell was fumbling and struggling to aim. I think this itself can tell you yeah: he may be a sniper but he wasn't a pro, he was a grunt. In the game: it was a scout that took the shot, and we never knew if the shot was indeed intended for Isara or Rosie, cause on one hand the scout could of taken the shot cause the scout knew Isara was the driver of the tank, but on the other hand he could of taken the shot at Rosie because she's a high ranking shocktrooper with actual acolades: But the scouts ingame remain emotionless because of their helmets: whoever the shot was intended for you feel like they were lying in wait and were in some regard informed and professional.
I remember when I was on the mission right before this scene that Vyse ate a tank round strait to the face and I managed to save him with a medic. That made this whole dieing to one bullet thing kind of awkward. =(
The anime... This episode, and the 3 other, in which they were "telling her farewell, rest in peace, etc." made me cry. And when on the 3rd episode after her death, when they recaptured Bruhl, Welkin finally forsed the tears out of himself. P.S. Don't know ho in the game, but in the anime, the Imperial sniper was aiming Rosie, but as he was wounded, and was swaying his rifle a lot bacause he was too weak to hold it, he shot Isara. He basicly "missed" his target - Rosie.
I remember watching the anime (3 years after playing the game) just today. When I got to this scene in the anime I was like ... "nah...they wont REALLY kill her this time right? not in the anime right?" and then... SOBBED. MY. EYES. OUT.
First time watching the anime back when it was airing and then I saw Isara death, I dropped the anime because I feel to depressed to continue watching it. After a 2 years of its airing I decided to watch it again and at that time I was able to completed in since I was over her death
I just started this game two days ago and got to this point. I have played many emotional games, like Danganronpa, Ace Attorney, Xenoblade Chronicles, Metal Gear, and more. But this... This was the first of those games to made me cry. The last time I cried was probably years ago, when one of my family members died. This is the first *game* to make me cry. Holy shit, this game is a fucking masterpiece and I can't wait to take back Bruhl and fuck those empire soldiers over.
Technically, I like the game version better for the "shocking" part where the shot comes out of nowhere, but I like the anime version from what happens after she gets shot. In the videogame version it took longer for Isara to die. They could have gotten the medic in the time it took for her to make that speech of hers, whereas in the anime version she just dies right then and there, making the scene more tragic and shocking.
It's also more realistic, a shot like we see in the anime, pretty much in the heart/lung area, would almost certainly kill you, and will render you unconscious due to the shock. Even without fragmentation of shattered ribs.
honestly the biggest issue I always saw was with this scene was the following, NO ONE CALLED FOR A MEDIC, nor did any of them do anything to try and render aid to Isara, this was a very preventable death if the characters had done what this situation mandated, personally its why I prefer the anime version in that version its very clear Isara was basically dead on the spot thus even if a medic was called it wouldn't have mattered
.... No! Isara! What the hell! I haven't even gotten to this part of the game! All I heard was there was an anime too so I searched stuff up and this popped up! It didn't think they'd actually kill her! Damn that sniper!
Sniper is doing his job- and if you think I am bad, imagine if the roles were reversed, and the imperials were the good guys, and you say Isara snipe that sniper, and he was close to the Imperial commander. With no knowledge of Isara, you'd say the same to her. So really... Haha you can't say damn that sniper.
The anime version is sad in a different way than the game version. The anime version, she's basically like a candle being snuffed out; it didn't matter that she was kind, or that she had dreams and goals to fullfill...death came for her sudden, and swift...just like a soldier in a war. The game version is sad because she gets a chance to reveal exactly what one of her biggest goals in life was, to live long enough to know that no help could possibly arrive in time...it was a more cruel death.
+Sky Arrow Bridge I am only up to this point in both so I can't speak for ALL of it, BUT, I think the game handled a fair amount better. Great PC port too.
I was playing this game just now and it showed me this..... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKKKKK!! It's like the developers gave me a very cute, cuddly puppy then shooting it in front of me! Fuck you Sega.
Because the sound profiles of modern snipers are different. They're using a Kar98k esque rifle in the games but most snipers are bigger and shoot larger calibers.
The game did it so much better. The game brought me to tears the first time around. The anime is just stupidly done. It's not even remotely the same as the game. The dialogue between Is and Rosie just before the shot in the game was %90 of why the death was so emotional. Rosie had finally made progress in overcoming her prejudice only to see Isara die before her eyes. In my opinion that was one of the most excellently executed death scenes I've seen. Then the anime goes and draws zero emotion from me because of its lackluster execution. There's a reason why video game movies/shows almost always suck.
Brady Shaver I think the story just captured war so much better than other narratives. Isara didn't die in glory or self sacrifice, it was a meaningless death and tragic, most Games and media in general make war deaths bombastic and filled with heroism when that was almost never the case.
I totally agree. It always hits hard when a character in a war movie dies for no reason. "Whats the price of a mile?" if you like a anti-war movies that criticize american military, watch the HBO series: Generation kill. "He died with honor." "No Jim, he just died...."
The worst part is that our victory in that mission, is HER victory, she's the one who come out with the smokescreen idea (and save all of the squad by doing it)
Technically, Is would be the most valuable due to the team due to the fact that she was both the only mechanic/driver of the tank and what appeared to be the full extent of Gallia's R&D department... I really liked Isara, but that was the main reason she was taken out instead of Rosie... The consolation (however miniscule it is) is that she is an optional character in VC2.
I agree. What sold me on Isara's death in the anime is that we get to see Welkin act strong but eventually break down as compared to the game where he was more serious
I knew Isara was going to die because of spoilers, but I didn't know when. One momment Rossie's getting along with her and the next Isara got shot. Im left frozen, and shocked.
Taking mortars, tank shells, rapid fire machine gun rounds, or sniper rounds to the face? Walk it off or call a medic from the other side of the map. 1 bullet during a cutscene, R.I.P
Damn she was so young she had such great dreams, she was just a nice girl who didn't even see the life, then just this "poof". It makes me feel empty and sad. As I think, devs regret of killing her that they are adding her to their last games. Still hope for valkyrian magic and ressurection.
They're both touching. I actually never cared for Isara until her death, but after that, I realized she symbolized needless death disguised as racism. I'm glad the developers thought there were things they could have done with her yet and put her in VC3. Rest well, child of hope.
The Darcsen (and Isara obviously) are really impressive in VC, they are discriminated and stay polite and nice (+ i don't know if it's on purpose but all the Darsen in VC 1 are part of the best crewmate in their own category+ Darscen Bond)
When the first time i see that i scream like Rick when they kill Bird person and start to cry a Lot, she was so cute and innocent....was a Big hit in the heart
Reallly late reply but in the anime, the solider who shot isara was disorientated and was on the verge of death by blood loss. This cause d him to randomly shoot whoever he can and saw, which was either rosie or isara.
It's a shame, since Isara was quite literally the only main character of the anime series that I really liked. I really disliked the love triangle thing. Romance was fine but when it got all melodramatic, I was put off and as it went, made me hate the 3 involved. I haven't played the 1st game so i don;t know about that.
I haven't seen the anime So I can't really compare, but the game there's no love triangle, Alicia and Welks grow closer in a quite believable way, of course from what I read, the turned Alicia personality 180º around for the anime, which should have destroyed the character.
Neurofied Yamato Trust me the game is much better the anime is regarded as a disgrace to the game. The anime changes alot of characters personalities especially Alicia who went from being a very well developed and lovable character to a generic tsundere whereas in the game she is the exact opposite of a tsundere. There is also no love triangle in the game and Faldio has barely any interaction with Alicia other then shooting her the game's romance is actually very well done and Welkin was an amazing protagonist. They also changed so much of the plot that a barely even resembles the original game.
I just replayed the game Faldio is just a friend to Alicia and is well aware of the feelings that Welkin and Alicia have to each other (every one knows as it is pretty obvious, maybe not Alicia who think that Welkin rejected her because she is a Valkyrur (when Welkin doesn't care but was probably too shy t confess before the Shield Maiden Operation)). But yes, there is no love triangle.
Neurofied Yamato The game is a 100x better. The death of Isara actually had weight and impact and changed the weight and tone of the narrative. Up until that point it's a pretty cheery and upbeat but after they release they're not invincible and are in dire straights. It's also the only game that I know of that does the holocaust and racism (and more importantly overcoming racism) extremely well.
I think the guy who shot Isara in the anime completely ruined it. I mean, he didn't have to show up stuttering and wondering which one to shoot. And since no one paid attention, he had two free shots (thought the game wasn't so different because Rosie was still in the open).
I would have to say that the death of Isara in the game was more of a shocking kind of sad, though it didn't really have THAT much impact on me. The anime on the other hand was less shocking, but the following episodes cement the emotional loss of Isara, from Welkin becoming depressed and Rosie equally so, also the rest of the death in ep 18 was very sad. So all in all i found the anime rendition sadder on the whole.
For me the anime was better. Because it just hit you the sad reality of war; no heroic death, no dramatic goodbyes. It just happened quick, and you can do nothing about it But I must admit that I was caught off guard in the game. I never see it coming.
i watched the game version in japanese VA and it made the scene even more sadder compared to the English VA imo but still both versions is still sad. RIP Isara
Welkin was a commander but they can get another man to sit in a tank and call orders. Isara was not only a very good mechanic but a tank operatior. AND a darcsen... meaning its likly she was trageted for that reason. I also believe in WW2 snipers were told to shoot the driver rather than the officer so the tanks dont move and artillery could hit them. Might be a reference, might be a plot point...who knows...
I found out while playing through the game "oh they made an anime out of this that's cool!", but then I watched it and thought "wow not only does this look so shitty in comparison to the game, but the story is just portrayed so much better" perfect example right here
A 1 hit kill on an engineer with a sniper rifle? I didnt hear no headshot ding so I call shenanigans! No but in all seriousness, I found the anime did a much better job with the aftermath.
@DJrister The Sniper looked like he was wounded or shell shocked. I would assume he thought he could kill one more soldier before dying himself. If i can remember what the wounded deserter said to Welkin and Alicia, earlier, soldiers of the empire have a very low survival rate....
Well Welkin is a low feels target, seeing as he's the player, and if he died, well... yeah. Isara, however, is a HIGH feels target. Lots of feels if she dies. And there were :c
Someone call the medic please? When I play this game, my soldiers go through a hell of a lot worse then being shot in the chest once. Very sad part of the story.
the reason Isara died even though Rosie was the bigger threat, was because Rosie had the lucky charm. the soldier was aiming at Rosie and still missed from that distance that wind shouldn't have been able to alter the bullets trajectory that much.
Try equipping one of your snipers with the captured Imperial rifles, their accuracy stats are beyond shit. You'd be better off sniping with a scout than those things.
Hey wtf, i'm playing the game for first time right now and i wasn't expecting this man. Everything was perfectly thrilling up to this point. Why it has to be the most innocent member in the group devs ? Smh. Not cool, an unnecessary tragic event seriously.
And furthermore, it was a main character of the cast so that makes it even more ridiculous as she supposed to have plot armor that MCs usually have for protection. Drama is seriously overrated in many great shows like honestly
Sigh. I just reached chapter 11 of the game and I wanted show one of the earlier scenes to a friend of mine. And in the list of recommended videos on the right-hand side was this video. Thanks for the spoiler.

And at that point, episode 17, I stopped watching the anime and dropped it. F*** this! I wasn't prepared for this. :-( Why did they kill one of the best and most interesting characters? They didn't even tell her story in the anime at that point.
After watching that scene when i first played valkyria chronicles i cried the entire night but that anime is like.... Meh... Her death feels like the death of any soldier A it lacks everything. 😐 Isara the nicest character of all deserved way more.
The game is more sudden and shocking, the anime is more realistic, it never made sense to me in the game that a handful of soldiers could sneak past all of squad seven, just to shoot one girl and run away.
Is it just me or does the anime seem to be populated with characters who read the script for the game and tried to make some futile changes for the anime. (The town guard having one or two anti-tank weapons and two rust buckets in the shape of tanks, Isara staying back instead of going into the imperial headquarters at Marberry.)
The game has less buildup and actually really surprising because we totally didn't expect it at all. But the anime has way better aftermath because we can see how the Squad 7 & Ramal trying their hardest to cope with her death, and Welkin slowly breaking down, plus Rosie singing made me tear up again.

Well it is war, and the commander cannot just break down.
Heard that gunshot. Shit gave me chills down my spine when she fell over. Seeing Rosie hand still extended frozen in shock eyes wide as can be.
All of them have an infinite amount of medical ragnite with them. not to mention the medic which is just a shout away.. oh well ¯\(°_o)/¯
When I first saw this in the game I said "why the fuck is no one giving her some first aid? Is there really no ragnaid in the tank?!?! WTF?!?!?!!?!?!"
Andrés Pétur Axelsson I was like "Why did i even pay all that money to upgrade my units personal armor???"
Kalenz HAHAHA XD
Because the tank driver is in the goddamn tank. She's never actually used as a unit. Like, ever.
well for my play threw i lost a guy in the fighting and used pounds of ragnaid. so my reason was, "we were out."
I remember watching the anime (3 years after playing the game) just today. When I got to this scene in the anime I was like ... "nah...they wont REALLY kill her this time right? not in the anime right?" and then... SOBBED. MY. EYES. OUT.
This scene stuck with me so many years.
Just that quiet "Isara" gets me every time. The shock and realization that she's lungshot.
This almost broke me, I almost threw my switch out the window when they showed the grave scene, it fucking hurt
Man I haven't played this game in a while since I got stuck. I was not expecting this kind of feels from this game.
honestly the biggest issue I always saw was with this scene was the following, NO ONE CALLED FOR A MEDIC, nor did any of them do anything to try and render aid to Isara, this was a very preventable death if the characters had done what this situation mandated, personally its why I prefer the anime version in that version its very clear Isara was basically dead on the spot thus even if a medic was called it wouldn't have mattered
Where can you watch the anime ?
.... No!
Isara is a BIG THREAT: Best TANK DRIVER EVAH!!
Just played the game on that Chapter and I want to hug Rosie so bad.
Haven't played VC1 but finished the anime. I think most scenes from anime was greatly delivered.
+Sky Arrow Bridge I am only up to this point in both so I can't speak for ALL of it, BUT, I think the game handled a fair amount better. Great PC port too.
@MaxAxil2 Would've been the best cop out ever.
Welkin: "NO! ISARA!"
Rosie: "Chill, we still have three turns to call the medic"
Slap some ragnite on it? D:
Noooooo
I was playing this game just now and it showed me this..... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKKKKK!! It's like the developers gave me a very cute, cuddly puppy then shooting it in front of me! Fuck you Sega.
God I love this scene, the crackle of that sniper rifle is just something you rarely hear in more modern shooter games these days

I think the story just captured war so much better than other narratives.
"He died with honor."
"No Jim, he just died...."
I think that the anime did a better job with Isara's death because of the fact that it showed the merciless nature of war.
I agree, I think people just preferred the game because they played it first making it more surprising.
That poor snopen in the anime. Rosies fury will end him. Painfully.
The Darcsen (and Isara obviously) are really impressive in VC, they are discriminated and stay polite and nice
(+ i don't know if it's on purpose but all the Darsen in VC 1 are part of the best crewmate in their own category+ Darscen Bond)
When the first time i see that i scream like Rick when they kill Bird person and start to cry a Lot, she was so cute and innocent....was a Big hit in the heart
I never again want to feel the feels I felt that day.
@DJrister but remember... Isara is the technician and technically the vehicle's operator. take her out and theoretically cripple the tank
Reallly late reply but in the anime, the solider who shot isara was disorientated and was on the verge of death by blood loss. This cause d him to randomly shoot whoever he can and saw, which was either rosie or isara.
At least...Rosie got to apologize.
Neurofied Yamato
The game is a 100x better.
Final fantasy 6 and 9 have genocide too.
I think the guy who shot Isara in the anime completely ruined it. I mean, he didn't have to show up stuttering and wondering which one to shoot. And since no one paid attention, he had two free shots (thought the game wasn't so different because Rosie was still in the open).
this scene turning me from Welkin to Lelouch
I would have to say that the death of Isara in the game was more of a shocking kind of sad, though it didn't really have THAT much impact on me. The anime on the other hand was less shocking, but the following episodes cement the emotional loss of Isara, from Welkin becoming depressed and Rosie equally so, also the rest of the death in ep 18 was very sad. So all in all i found the anime rendition sadder on the whole.
For me the anime was better. Because it just hit you the sad reality of war; no heroic death, no dramatic goodbyes. It just happened quick, and you can do nothing about it
But I must admit that I was caught off guard in the game. I never see it coming.
I stopped playing the game for months when this happened xD
i watched the game version in japanese VA and it made the scene even more sadder compared to the English VA imo but still both versions is still sad.
RIP Isara
This scene is very sad i just watched the anime episode and i was wheeping right at the beginning of the scene T_T
He was wounded when he took the shot, couldn't hold his breath or keep the rifle steady.
This upset me so bad in the game
Welkin was a commander but they can get another man to sit in a tank and call orders. Isara was not only a very good mechanic but a tank operatior. AND a darcsen... meaning its likly she was trageted for that reason.
I also believe in WW2 snipers were told to shoot the driver rather than the officer so the tanks dont move and artillery could hit them. Might be a reference, might be a plot point...who knows...
Armor. While everyone else is armed and armored up, Isara is not.
I found out while playing through the game "oh they made an anime out of this that's cool!", but then I watched it and thought "wow not only does this look so shitty in comparison to the game, but the story is just portrayed so much better"
perfect example right here
RIP Isara best imouto :(
This is why you wear a helmet and keep your head down in a battle
If only Welkin had issued Defense Boost and Caution command on Isara...
Actually I shot her because I'm a Imperial Soldiers before joining the Soviet Soldiers.
That happened to me in the game about 30 minutes ago... Still going SAD FACE.
In both version Largo is holding a gun instead of a lance. So Damn it Largo
It was on the Hearth. Such accuracy.
Well Welkin is a low feels target, seeing as he's the player, and if he died, well... yeah. Isara, however, is a HIGH feels target. Lots of feels if she dies. And there were :c
Damn. If only the Gallian militia issued body armor instead of mini skirts to the female soldiers.
This shit hurt
Someone call the medic please? When I play this game, my soldiers go through a hell of a lot worse then being shot in the chest once. Very sad part of the story.
the reason Isara died even though Rosie was the bigger threat, was because Rosie had the lucky charm. the soldier was aiming at Rosie and still missed from that distance that wind shouldn't have been able to alter the bullets trajectory that much.
Try equipping one of your snipers with the captured Imperial rifles, their accuracy stats are beyond shit. You'd be better off sniping with a scout than those things.
Frikgeek Actually even some of the royal assault rifles are more accurate than Imperial rifles...
Whaaaat. So in the anime version he was actually aiming for Rosie... hold your breath if you're gunna hard scope noob!
DJrister, I think Rosie would be the first to agree with you...
Wanna write an AU fanfiction now saying that Isara survives
Hey wtf, i'm playing the game for first time right now and i wasn't expecting this man. Everything was perfectly thrilling up to this point. Why it has to be the most innocent member in the group devs ? Smh. Not cool, an unnecessary tragic event seriously.
Eh war is chaotic and cruel so the death is not unnecessary. Sure was unexpected though.
It's a cheap way to add dramatic weight to the story. It's dumb af.
And furthermore, it was a main character of the cast so that makes it even more ridiculous as she supposed to have plot armor that MCs usually have for protection. Drama is seriously overrated in many great shows like honestly
Fuck this scene, man. Damnit war!
I just finished the anime, goddamn it I knew this scene was coming and I thought I was ready for it but nope: I WASN’T
Prepare for trouble
And make it double
Did the fact that there were no guards and imps were able to sneak right next to them mean that it was Welkens fault that Isara died?
Sigh. I just reached chapter 11 of the game and I wanted show one of the earlier scenes to a friend of mine. And in the list of recommended videos on the right-hand side was this video. Thanks for the spoiler.
sorry people post clips of games online
Yeah, but the spoiler is there in the title. I didn't have to even click the video to get spoiled.
Isara Return Times:
Valkyria chronicles 3.4 Dlc
Project x zone 1.2 Dlc
SEGA X Bandai Namco Ps4 Xbox one Switch 2019
Mixed Worlds corrupted Ps4 Xbox one Switch PC 2019
And at that point, episode 17, I stopped watching the anime and dropped it. F*** this!
I wasn't prepared for this. :-(
Why did they kill one of the best and most interesting characters? They didn't even tell her story in the anime at that point.
Let's be honest here isara doesn't deserve it
After watching that scene when i first played valkyria chronicles i cried the entire night but that anime is like.... Meh... Her death feels like the death of any soldier A it lacks everything. 😐 Isara the nicest character of all deserved way more.
@arvhol My brother is currently playing the game and even now I get emotional whenever I see Isara. Her death was just so sad.
i guess it depends on where the sniper was. maybe he couldn't see Welkin.
The game is more sudden and shocking, the anime is more realistic, it never made sense to me in the game that a handful of soldiers could sneak past all of squad seven, just to shoot one girl and run away.
When I watched this scene my reaction was...
WTF did Butcher Gen write this too!?!?
Is it just me or does the anime seem to be populated with characters who read the script for the game and tried to make some futile changes for the anime. (The town guard having one or two anti-tank weapons and two rust buckets in the shape of tanks, Isara staying back instead of going into the imperial headquarters at Marberry.)
