- In this video, I share the salt dough recipe that I use and also my personal tips & tricks for perfect failproof salt dough.
Salt dough cookies are for decor purposes only and not made for consumption.
Salt Dough Recipe:
2 cups of plain flour
1 cup of salt
1 cup of water (you may not need all the water so add a little at a time).
3 tea bags
Mix all ingredients together until it forms a dough. Add water a little at a time. You may or may not need all of the liquid. If it's too sticky add a bit more flour. Have fun creating pretty fake cookies!

Best one I’ve seen for salt dough!! Great idea adding tea!!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Hey Friend, Thanks for sharing!! I pretty much use the same method to make my dough ornaments. I will be making a video on how I make my dough ornaments soon. Thanks for the tea tip, I usually spray paint mine to look like baked cookies. Also, great tip on leaving the parchment paper on the cooling rack until the outer layers dry. My ornaments sometimes get the rack lines in the back. Friend, you crack me up, just like me!! I too have never had luck baking my ornaments in the oven, they always loose their shape. Air dry in the summer time, that's when I get mine done. You have a great dayl!!
Hi Friend! Thanks for watching and can't wait to see ur video and cookie creations. :)

Thanks so much! 😊
You are an outstanding tutor because you ALWAYS give rationales. Not only how to do it but WHY. For me this is the best teaching style. You frequently include the what ifs as well as options. Your vids are NEVER a waste of my time. KUDOS!!!
Hi Cindy! first time making these salt cookies and no joke! It's been 5 days and still not dry! I'm glad you made it clear that it can take weeks cuz others don't explain that. They say oh a couple of days...no! it can take 2 or 3 weeks if you want done right and they are not cookies to eat so air dry sounds the better way to go. If I use model magic clay would that speed up the process you think? Thanks again for you videos loving them cuz you say how it is!😊
Hi! In the winter or cooler months, the cookies take longer to dry. You can place a fan in front of them to speed it up a bit. Model Magic also takes a while to firm up. You can make cookies but they will not harden in a day or two and can take weeks to totally harden. They will get hard but it happens over time. 😉
Perfect! I love to watch you design these beautiful desserts! Thank you so much. Many Blessings
Thanks so much! 😊
When I was a little girl my mom had us make Christmas ornaments and she put them in the over and they were fine . We made braided Candycane’s and we used cookie cutters and then the next day we painted them :) it’s a great memory and I look forward to doing this with my three cutie patootie when they get older:) tfs stay safe and God Bless:)

Thank you! I’ve never used almond flour.
Thank you for the great tips.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
I love your tutorials you’re very good and what you do I have a question for you though when you make the recipe and once you finished with them from using the cookie cutter and you said at least wait two weeks do you still have to put them in the oven or because you waited two weeks you don’t have to put them in the oven which is it? Watching for you from Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thank you! I do not bake them at all.
How long does the last on a plate when you display them decorating them and then putting them on display?
Thank you very much for getting back to me. It was very kind of you.
Great vid! Would I add brown instead of yellow to get more of a baked done cookie like you choc chips or were those painted that nice golden brown?
Yes you can! I painted the chips. Thank you! 😊
I’m new to all this fake ideas, it’s super interesting how you use thing to making cookies, candies etc. I have all your videos saved. Thank you for your tutorials. Gee I better start making these cut outs so I can put them outside to dry. (Would that help dry them faster ) ? I would also like to try my hand at the scarecrow you made with the styrofoam rounds. Do you have a tutorial on only that one ? Once again TFS
Hi! You’re Welcome. Take advantage of the warm air for drying salt dough. So it’s ok to put outside. I do not have a tutorial for the scarecrow as it was just an idea so that my viewers can do their own thing when it comes to designing.
I find that when I am doing hand made paper mache creations if I put them in front of a fan they dry faster. Do you think if I put the salt dough cookies to dry in front of a fan that would cut down the dry time? I love all your videos. PLEASE KEEP MAKING MORE. Thank you
You’re welcome! That can definitely help with the dry time. Not sure where you are located but if you live in a warm climate you can place them outside so the sun can help. In colder climates the dough takes longer to dry. 😉 Thanks for watching. 😊
@@peepthisyall I live in Florida where it is warm, but that said it is also very humid. So I will try the sun and the fan and keep you posted.😃 Thank you
❤ can you paint these cookies I would like to make some gingerbread cookies with this recipe
Yes you can! 😉
Thank you for sharing and stay safe.I can't wait to try it with my grandkids.God Bless You.MeMe
You’re welcome! 😊
Question - Do you seal your salt dough? If so, what do you use? Thank you for your helpful information!
I do not seal my salt dough. ;)
You make the sweetest things!. Thanks so much for your videos! I'm having a problem with the cookies cracking. I've made them twice and air dried them for days and both times some of them cracked. I noticed in this video at about 21:33 into it, the back of the bunny cookie was cracked straight across. What causes this and how can I prevent it? Thanks a bunch!
Thanks so much! 😊 In the video I banged the cookie on my counter a little too hard so it cracked. I never had issues with my cookies cracking. Are you using the painters sticks as guides so the cookies ate even? Make sure the dough is not too soft, wet or thin.
@@peepthisyall Oh I see. Maybe I'm using too much water.
MY friend I watch your videos , I love it !
Thank you! Thanks for watching. :)
I would like the cookies a little darker. Could you add cocoa into the dough?
I’m sure that would work.😉
Could we add cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice or essential oils to make it scented?
Good question! It should work. I may try it. ;)
Thank You So Much
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. :)
I’m curious to know why I shouldn’t use my regular rolling pin on my salt dough? I didn’t know that
You can use your rolling pin. I just choose to keep my fake bake supplies separate from my other supplies. I sometimes add paint and other stuff to my fake bakes that shouldn’t come in contact with my real food. 😉
Hi Cindy! Mine keep turning white as they dry. Even with the tea and yellow food coloring. How do i get them to keep the yellowish cookie color after drying
You can dry brush them with a light color like classic caramel. 😉
Thank you! I will try that
How long will these last? I love your videos 💙💙
My friend Joann Barrandey has some from 30 years ago. So if you take care and store them well they last forever. 😊
Could you put these outside in the sun to dry? Could you turn oven on, turn off let cool some and then put in oven to absorb some heat to dry maybe?
I never bake them in the oven. Only air dry. You can put them in the sun to help speed up the drying.
Have you tried adding instant coffee?
I have not. 😉
many times, but funny thing is that it disintegrates over the years. Some that I made in 1977 is still together but has holes eaten out by dust mites.
Love this!!! Can you add acrylic paint to give the baked look (touch of classic caramel acrylic paint)?
Thank you! I have never added paint to the dough. I have dried brush with acrylic paint after the cookie has dried. 😉
Does the water temperature matter?
It does not but room temperature is fine.
Can u add cinnamon?
Sure!
So why are some cookies made w this & others with clay?
Versatility. Some ppl make salt dough because they like it or can’t afford other clays. Some use clay because they don’t want to be bothered making salt dough. It all depends on the crafter. 😉
Hi, I have a few questions. How thick cut are your cookies? Why are my cookies cracking?
Hi! Not sure about thickness size I just place them between the two painters sticks. Not sure why they are cracking. They may be too thin. Put them in between 3 painters stick. That has never happened to me. 😞
Hi where did you get your peep cutter all different sizes please?
I bought those in 2014. Those are no longer available but you may find something similar on Etsy.
I have a question about the salt dough cookies. After they dry for a long time do you still bake them??
No. There is no need to bake them. 😉
What did I do wrong if it still sticky
Not sure why its sticky. That has never happened to me. How long did you let it dry?
How did you make your chocolate chip cookies?
I used a mold I purchased from Etsy. 😉
About how many average-sized cooked can you get out of one recipe?
About 20 or so.
How do you know if the cookies are really dry
When dry the salt dough has consistent color, if when you touch it, it can be pressed it needs further drying. I just make mine way in advance so I know that they have fully dried. 😉
Thank you
ls this diy orcookies you eat
Not for eating just for crafting. 😉
have you ever made apple pie?
I have not. 😉
this was so so awsine
Thank you! 😊
Is it ment to feel gritty while your kneading it and sort of glitter from the salt grains..? How did you make your milk in the glass..?
Yes it will be gritty from the high salt content and the salt glistens. The milk came that way. The cup is a candle I purchased from Dollar Tree.
@@peepthisyall its really cool, ive watched your milk bottle vid but in the glass would of been cool if you had made it... Ok, it was feeling really gritty while kneading and i wasnt sure the surface would turn out as nice and smooth as yours... Thanks...
@@NotSoDelicate It will turn out fine once fully dried. 🙂
