Hi Nic, Love your videos! I'm currently doing my DM course. I'm doing my theory and confined space section here in the UK and my open water elements in the red sea. I'm a commercial/ industrial electrician by trade and currently working as a technical project manager as I have experience in both Electrical and Mechanical elements. However, I love diving and every time I go the people I meet (whether it's the new buddies I made, the boat crew, the captain of the boat, the guides/ instructors) and myself cry when I have to leave, which is never nice. I've found myself inadvertently being the 3rd guide on many occasions, I guess people see me as part of the crew. I love helping people. This year has been particular tough for me my family. My sister has stage 4 cancer and my mum has had a stroke. It's made me realise just how short life is and I guess that's been the reason to push more into my career in diving. I've already dived (Egypt, Cyprus, Thailand, Cambodia, Maldives, Mexico, Belize) I'll be diving in Socorro Islands in December on a 10night liveaboard (already getting upset thinking how many tears will happen on my departure from that, lol). It will be my first trip since starting my DM course. Do you have any suggestions or tips with my career? Should I be asking questions on my travels? Are there jobs out there where I can also incorporate my skilled trades?
    Sorry about the essay.
Hope to hear from you! :)

This sounds like such an adventure! I'm so sorry that you've had some tough times recently, but it sounds like diving truly is your happy place so pursuing a career in the industry is a great idea!
It sounds like you have an uncanny knack of getting on any dive teams good side - I'd definitely use this to your advantage to ask questions. Ask them to explain their decisions/choices/dive plan so you can start learning about good decision making and judgement.
I think dive centres will be all over your extra skills - especially ones in remote locations!!
The diving world is a very small place, keep in touch with all the friends you make. They'll be your ears on the ground when you start looking for work.
If there's one thing I wish I learnt about sooner to help my career it would be Human Factors in Diving (check out www.thehumandiver.com)
Are you stopping at DM or do you fancy going all the way to Instructor? Give me a shout if you fancy doing your IDC next year!

@@thediveprohub Thank you for your response and tips!! Knowing me I'll carry on to IDC (I'm a bit of a freak with overachieving/ learning, even though I hate exams!!). I'm finishing my open water DM in Feb next year as I'm working full time and I'll be away in December. Feel free to add me on Facebook to discuss more!!

Me too. Fingers crossed for all of us to move on to DM level this year. I hope I‘ll get my DM in Cyprus by the end of October and then I would love to work as a DM at a cool Padi Dive Center as of November. After 1.5 to 2 years I am planning to become an OWSI, too.

Thank you, I hope this will work for me - at least my time budget of 3.5 month of diving is generous. 😊

I was on track to become an instructor but stopped at assistant instructor. You don't see that rating much because most folks go from dive master to instructor and skip assistant instructor. I didn't continue to instructor because of the issues with insurance. When you have insurance while teaching, you are covered for lawsuits against you for people who claim you didn't teach them well enough. All good and well then, but what happens when you stop instructing and drop your insurance? You are on your own. So if you teach for ten years and then stop and drop your insurance, you could be sued by some person you taught last year and if you don't have your insurance anymore, you have to pay for your own defense. It's the same as when a person who goes diving 10 or 20 years after learning to dive but never kept up with it and then has an accident. He or his heirs may come looking to blame you for the accident. If you don't have your diving instructors insurance, you are on your own. Not that this would ever happen, and I did see it happen, it was enough to deter me from becoming an instructor.

Yup, it's certainly a heavy weight on any instructors shoulders. The thought of "what if" is always hanging over us.
To be honest, if the preverbial did hit the fan, assistant instructors and DMs could still find themselves in hot water even if there was an instructor in charge.
I didn't consider the effect of back dating claims though. Its a bit scary isnt it!

@@thediveprohub It is scary. I had a life outside of diving with a lot of assets. I didn't want to jeopardize anything I had for my family for my fun with diving. I had a lot of fun working with new divers but it just wasn't worth the risk for me. I have a lot of respect for those that do. I was a public safety rescue diver as well and got to see the lawsuit investigations which resulted after diving accidents. It was often not pretty.

Hi! I'm from Spain. I will start my DM here this summer. I've been told that it's a good idea to get the instructor training abroad. Like an internship. Do you know any cool places that are trustworthy? I would like to try Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand, and similar places. But I'm a bit worried of scams hahah.
I envision my life working in Spain on diving season (summer) and then spend the winter working on diving season of other countries.
What are your thoughts on that plan?
Thank you so much for this video
    Bye!

      Hey Elena!
I'd say it's more about the dive centre and the course director than the area. There's good and bad all over the world.
Have a think where you'd like to spend some time the most and then start doing your research. 😁
I wrote this blog post about how to find a good dive centre, you might find it useful. fifthpointdiving.com/about-the-fifth-point/choose-a-dive-centre-in-the-uk/
You can use the principles and apply them to dive centres all over the world. Especially the bit about finding somewhere that you click with. I honestly think thats the most important thing when it comes to pro training.
Don't rule out the UK either bahaha 😉
Spain in the summer and further afield in the winter sounds awesome. A great way to travel but still have roots at home for family and friends.
