So we get colonel from French. French got it from Italian "colonnello" and adopted it as coronel due to a linguistic process called dissemination where one of two repeated sounds in a word changes to differentiate them (this time the first L->R). English got coronel from French and it evolved into the current pronunciation of "kernel" but apparently in the 16th Century, English scholars started translating a bunch of old Italian treatises, which brought the colonel spelling back. Apparently French reverted back to colonel from coronel both in spelling and pronunciation, but English didn't revert the pronunciation to match the spelling.

Professor, your Ben Franklin videos are one of the brightest ideas and most effective strategies you've ever come up with to provide an in-depth analysis of pronunciation for your fortunate students. As you break down whole sentences into smaller sections, you succeed in describing effectively the various aspects of pronunciation down to the last detail. And it's remarkable how your students not only enjoy your lessons but also keep progressing more and more toward accurate pronunciation of American English. I commend you for you painstaking effort and highly academic standard in language learning. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your original teaching techniques and strategies in the near future. Thank you for your attention, professor.
