The best way to buy whisky on a budget is simply buying it at the right time.
Roughly a month before Christmas you can find Highland Park 12, Old Pulteney 12, Aberlour 12, Glenmorangie 10 and some other for 25 pounds at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, etc.

I just found your channel and LOVE it. Well done, mate. Here in US, I live in a state-controlled liquor state (NC). So I travel to get good single malts. Thanks for reviving my interest in them. Again, well done.

I love to find whiskey that outperforms its price point. So i appreciate videos like this one. Ralfydotcom & Whiskey Vault are the only whiskey channels i subscribe-to in part because both help me find those lower-priced lesser-known quality drams.

Ralfy... You are the go to expert for whisky reviews.. I have been watching you since about 2008 I think.. Maybe it was your website then.. It inspired me and educated me. Started with speysides, then highlands and lowlands..Finally the intimidating iodine of Islay.. Drank some NAS Bowmore Legend Islay and it really threw me. Bad intro to Islay.. FINALLY found Laphroig 10... My favorite reasonable priced Islay. Thanks for a great journey Ralfy. I am open to all whisky/whiskey options now.

Recently opened a bottle of Adelphi, my kind of blend. Bit of salt, peat, lots of sweet honey, touch of sherry and a lovely bit of dry tannins. Needs a couple of drops of water. The grain, as Ralfy says, is present but meshes well.
Well worth the £22 or so I paid for it :)

    My best bargains:
    Ardmore Traditional Cask
    Black Bottle
    Glenfarclas 10
    Nikka from the Barrel
    Redbreast 12
    Sazerac 6 (rye)
    Buffalo Trace
    All excellent and pretty cheap.

I saw two 1L bottles of Highland Mist on the bottom shelf for $6.99. Took the chance and gotta say it's honest as Ralfy would say. Smooth sweet grain, quite present speyside-y malts and very subtle Islay peat in the back that doesn't insist on taking over. Not for analyzing the way you would a complex single malt (and I far prefer single malts) but I am starting to think of basic blends as a different family of spirits, which really helps. I took a chance on a few bottom shelf bottles based on Ralfy's recommendations - Benchmark 8 bourbon, Grand Macnish and they are all tremendous values for the price along with Ballantine's Finest. I find that they tend to grow on me as I sip the dram. I've learned not to judge a whisky from the first sips.

Thank you for your recommendations ralfy! Even today, 4 years later, your suggestions are still going a long way. Your channel has given me so much better advice than a multitude of other resources available to me online. To be honest, I can't find one of these bottles in this video in even the largest liquor store near me. That being said, it lead me to McLelland's Islay (single malt) at a great price. Would you recommend it?

@fluffyman15 I was actually criticizing Black Label somewhat, but as I say, I think we get a different version here in Canada.
You expressed interest in trying a blend. I'd recommend trying Teacher's Highland Cream, Te Bheag and maybe Grant's Family Reserve on the less expensive side of things. Islay Mist is also quite good (it's fingerprint malt is Laphroaig). Ralfy has also recommended Monkey Shoulder and Black Bottle. I don't get those round my neck of the woods, so I can't comment on them.

I love all the talk of "supermarket" whiskys. Up here in NYS in the U.S. Supermarkets are not allowed to sell whisky haha. Everything is at the liquor store. I must say I just picked up a bottle of this Islay Mist 8 year, and it is quite decent. After being charged 8% sails tax it came out to $20.50 USD. It smells like a young laphroaig on the nose, the taste is great. If you are well used to the Islay range, give this a try.

I like a good deal but also hate hangovers. I found that Crown Royal Canadian blended whiskey is extremely smooth and no hangover and decent price. Just my opinion mind you, thanks Ralfy. I don't think Ralfy has done a test of it but the ones I read online criticize it because it is TOO SMOOTH. So there you go, you can chug a lug and it's high class enough not to destroy your brain the next morning. Cheers!

Was just out of ideas what to get tonight, and no special occasion, didn't want to spend too much, so checked out your 'Budget' video Ralfy. It reminded me I was going to try Monkey Shoulder a few months ago but never got around to it; so off to the liquor store I went. Very well priced, actually about the cheapest Malt/Blend there. Smelled it, first impression was very intense, perhaps too 'Punchy', but then tasted it. Lacks a bit of character I think, but nice to drink!!! Almost too smoothe.

@fluffyman15 I just got through a bottle of Black Label, trying it only because it was the whisky of choice for Christopher Hitchens, who passed away this week, and I wanted to give him a small tribute, and see what he was talking about.
It's noticeably watery in the middle. Speyside fruit and lightness on the front, watery unpleasantness in the middle, and muted and watery smokey flavours on the finish.
Of course here in Canada it's diluted to 40% instead of the regular 43% and costs $46...

  • @bandostyle

Hi Ralphy. I know it's passed a long time from the video but I've finally opened my Adelphi dancey man that I bought few years ago after watching this very same video...well it was a real (huge) disappointment.
I can just smell alcohol, only after letting open it up a bit comes some fruit and floreal notes. In the mouth I can taste just grain and, again, alcohol.
The finish is so dry and short...
I don't know if it is an unlucky bottle but is definetely a whisky I would not recommend.
With the same money you can buy much better basics single malts imho.
Take it as a positive and constructive critic from a loyal maltlover.

Try to take a trip on the ferry with a car to Puttgarden in Germany. Calle and the Scandlines BorderShop sell both Glenmorangie 10yr and Laphroaig 10yr for around 20€, Puttgarden is well known for some of the cheapest alcohol prices in Europe (maybe even the world). Its well worth the trip if you buy in bulk, I go there once a year from Sweden... ;)

Indeed the matter of individual preference in tastes is a subjective subject. Everyone likes something a bit different even when there are similarities in comparative tastes abound. That said------I love a varied of single malt and blended scotch whiskies, but I also love stuff like the Kraken rum. While I typically do not drink rum, I'd have to say that out of the ones I am familiar with-----Kraken is one of my favorites......

Ralfy - how does Islay Mist compare to Black Bottle as far as smoky/peatiness? I can't get islay Mist in OH, would have to mail order and pay shipping. BTW, what is your opinion of blending your own? I've taken an inexpensive but unremarkable blend (White Horse) as a base, mix in 1 part Ardbeg to 3 parts White Horse, and feel it makes for a good smoky blend unlike anything you can buy for less than a premium blend (about $23). Great for everyday consumption!

Ein Stein Why do you say that? For $32 you got anything better?

    • @einsteinius72
      @einsteinius72 9 лет назад

maulCS There are way better Whiskies for that kind of money. Glenfarclas 12yo, Tulibardine 228, Glen Moray 12 yo, to name just a few of my personal favorites that can be had for LESS than Monkey Shoulder.
About Monkey Shoulder: you can taste that the distillation is rushed. The liquor tastes harsh and more like a cheap blend with grain whisky than an all malt blend.

    • @einsteinius72
      @einsteinius72 9 лет назад +1

maulCS They all are a lot cheaper here in The Netherlands. When I think something tastes like grain whisky, then it is my personal view of this whisky. And it's a 'taste' and not a statement. That said, I've been sippin' whisky for 25+ years. Maybe my acquired taste says something, but maybe not. But I was trying to make the point that - as an all malt blend - it sure doesn't taste like one.
But, if you think it tastes great, then by all means, keep drinking it!
As for the prices in The Netherlands:
Glenfarclas 12yo: 27 euros (miles better!)
      Tullibardine 228: 35 euros
Glen Moray 12yo: 25 euros (not very complex, but if you don't know what good quality distillation means, try this one. It's my regular 'startup' before I get to 'the good stuff')
I can name a lot more, these just sprung to mind.
If you don't go for my opinion, go check the other online sources. These are all way better if you check whisky monitor database and other malt afficionado sites.

I'm curious about your note-taking. Do you use a pre-fabricated whisky tasting notes template or do you just use sheets of regular old paper?

Ralfy, if pressed to choose 5 among the following budget whiskies which would you choose/avoid? (2 need to be a Laphroaigish peaty):
Glen Grant 10yo, Glengoyne 10yo, Campbeltown Loch (Christmas Blend), Finlaggan Old Reserve, Muirhead's Silver Seal 8yo, The Ileach Peaty, Bowmore Surf, Tobermory Ledaig 10yo.
Appreciate the videos, masterful malt vloggery! :)

I just bought Islay Mist Peated Reserve, do not like it at all as there's no trace of Islay in there :( and I adore Laphroaig 10 y.o. !!
