How long have you been learning Arabic and what's been the biggest challenge for you? 😊

I've been on and off learning for a couple years and often feel annoyed at the lack of progress

I know a lot of words but find tenses hard and also find speaking very very hard although I have vocab

It is a lot of stuff to get past initially before you reach the threshold where things start to click a bit more - took me a while too and I was studying full time. I totally get it! Definitely gotta stick with it though - it really is super rewarding. And speaking for MSA (I assume?) is a tough one because if you want to speak well you sort of just have to practise by yourself mostly. Thanks a lot for sharing bro :)

I’m motivated to get good at MSA but wondering how much time to focus on theoretical grammar study versus just extensive reading and sentence mining.

For about a year now! Pimsleur really helped getting my basics down in speaking the Masri 3ammiya but I have struggled here and there with feeling that same progress.
I knew that jumping off point from the basics to intermediate would be a different feel though, so I try not to get discouraged.
Other than the weird limbo beginner stage, finding Egyptians in the South East of the US is rough💀

Hi Qasim - Interesting videos on your channel. I've been studying on and off for years. I learn stuff, forget it, learn it again: It's been a heck of a voyage. The very best advice I could give to anyone is: Take pride in what you've already achieved; and then use that as your fuel and motivation to keep going. Biggest challenge? Possibly irregular verbs!

I learnt grammar and honestly it does not help because when learning a language you want to have the ability to read and speak the language and when this is not happening many people rightly quit. I then started studying Bayna Yadak and two years later I am now reading bbc news Arabic and speaking at. Intermediate level. I had an entrance test at SOAS and they recommended I can study the advanced level (I am not advanced but they felt comfortable I can converse basics and read). Watch many Fusha videos as this helps with input that is required to help you build a vocabulary. MSA is not spoken in the streets but most books and newspapers and tv news is all MSA. I recently started listening to the Levantine dialect as wow I was surprised how much I understand maybe 60%-70%. Basic grammar helps but that’s all you need to know and remember books like the Medina grammar books are phenomenal but designed for FULL TIME university students not part time people who are working or studying another subject not Arabic. Bayna Yadak is brilliant for conversation and it’s no wonder that the book is widely used in Egypt because the author in book one covers very little grammar and it’s about reading a conversation which is followed by wonderful exercises. I use italki tutor online several times each week because the journey to become truly fluent from B2 to C1 is a journey requiring lots of practice and patience. Don’t give up and do focus too much on grammar you won’t need it.

Arabic is harder than people think.

I recommend new students start with the Gateway to Arabic books 1-7 (£4.50 each). I also found the RUclips series Bayyinah Dream Intensive 1 by Nouman Ali Khan (Bayyinah Institute) to be really good for learning Quranic Arabic. It goes in-depth into the grammar structure in an engaging way with Nouman's two students Ahmad and Maryam.
