Tony Christie was one of those early 70's type singers who could actually sing. Listen to his control right throughout his vocal range. Bloody superb. And this song is an absolute pearl.
Tony Christie was awarded the freedom of the city of Amarillo, Texas for helping it's tourism industry. Although at the time he had never visited the city.
I used to sing this song with my mum, playing on an 8-track stereo, in a Ford Mustang convertibele, in the early 70's. - I wish I had a time-machine to travel back to these days! By far the happiest days of my life... (Lots of Tom Jones, too...)
Reminds me of being a kid - mum had this record and we played it and played it! Never realised that Tony Christie has such a cheeky smilethough! - every time I watch this I can't help but grin when he smiles at the camera! Fantastic voice and great song : )
Thank you Lee and a big thank you to Peter kay and Paddy McGuiness for bringing Tony back to life... I am a fellow Bolton lad so I know and love all these people.
Takes me back to the dreamy days of the '70's. This tune was played ad nauseam on Radio Uganda in the seventies when i was still a small boy. Wonderful song....!!!
I am Spanish and it is the first time i listen that song and it is absolutely lovely! Great voice.. But i think it is gonna be stocked in my head for a long time.
It's me again, Mary, and yes I just have to have my "fix" of Tony Christie. It's going to be a long and busy weekend with the kids, shuttling them around and cleaning the house. At least I can dream, can't I? Tony, if you read this, be happy you make this FL housewife happy for a few minutes each day. God bless you!
hola!...que gusto me produce volver a oír estas melodías de Tony Christie...vienen a mi memoria los gratos recuerdos de mi juventud...gracias y un abrazo de amistad, desde Bogotá Colombia.
@singaporeaj hi,don't know if you know this.tony used to work for the british oxygen company at brinsworth, yorkshire,he was an instalation engineer.he used to practice in the works canteen after work.we were all very proud of him.great guy.
Tony Christie is God... 16 April 1972 ... I'm eight years old and returning to Waterford on a coach from Cork after Waterford had nicked three goals in the last twelve minutes to beat Cork Hibs 3-2 and thereby snatch the League of Ireland title from the Corkmen in front of 26,000 people. My uncle Fran brought me with him on the day. I don't know how many times the lads on the coach sang Amarillo on the way back. Tony Christie is God.
Wheneven I'm feeling down, like this week, I play this video and dream of Tony Christie! I listen to it a lot and I just can't take my eyes off him! Even though he's as senior citizen now, he'll remain "forever young" in my heart! Hats off to Mr. Fitzgerald!
Jay Ashton sings a great version of "Amarillo" in his cabaret (after his amazing Elvis tributes) in the video response above. This is one we all know and love ........
Also, I think that the actor, Alex O' Loughlin, "Moonlight, "Three Rivers, and now the new "Hawaii 5-0", looks a lot like this Tony. Does anyone else see it! Mary in Palm Bay FL

Lunches at College were never complete until someone played this on the pub jukebox & we all had a sing along... and that was only in 2006!!

Boas recordações dos anos setenta. Belas matinés dançantes no Recreativo de Várzea - Lobão da Beira. Belos tempos.
