I use Mamiya since 1981 . I know from experiance that the aluminium helicoid is the weak spot off Mamiya 645 lenses . It does not matter if you use a C or N lens , the aluminium helicoid need after 15 to 20 years cleaning and lubrication . Old grease act like sand . A aluminium helicoid will lock up if it is not lubricated well , in a bad case the aluminium thread is cold welded together and will never lose again .
I clean and lubricated my up to 40 year old Mamiya Sekor C 645 lenses and now the helicoid turns smooth and without any sound . Beside this I still love my old trusty M 645 . Greetings from the Netherlands Peter .

I had one of these that my sister in law gave me. Used it for awhile, but ended up trading it in on KEH for a 645 1000s. Happy I did, simply because I didn't like all the plastic. Decent camera though for sure.
As far as not being able to change out the backs, I don't really see that as an issue. You just have to shoot with the mindset of whatever film you have in the camera at the time. If you're doing professional jobs with one of these in 2024, well good luck I guess. Buy 2 of them.

The body is cast aluminum, the covers are poly-carbonate, a very tough plastic.

I just picked one of these up for $15.00 at a Savers thrift store with the rapid winder grip.
Incredibly clean body and lens. I forgot how much I miss looking into a MF viewfinder..
If your shooting in the studio you can remove the film cartridge out in a dark room and put it in a box so you can use another film type.

just saw your video... (silly and naive question)... are the inserts of the m645 compatible with the 645e? am i wrong to assume all 645 lenses are compatible with all models?

As far as the lenses go, I picked up an "N" version of the 80mm 2.8 on eBay and I felt like the build quality was awful compared to my other non-N 645 lenses (all metal). The N version had inconsistent resistance when turning the focus ring and the plastic aperture ring felt cheap and loose. Take all that as you will but I don't think I'd buy another N version unless I could handle it first. I'm curious now if I received a really bad copy because I keep hearing good things about the "N' versions.

if only the pricing was still accurate… 645e body and an 80mm can easily run you $700+ these days

OK!! Something one should know that i found out today..
Nothing will work unless the camera has a roll of film in it.
It needs to be cocked to the first frame then the meter fires up as well as the shutter..
Owners manual does not mention this little tid bit of heart break info.
    Lesson learned.

In the owners manual it states that the camera will work if there is a take up spool in the film insert. I tried it on mine and it works.

Somehow nowadays this camera can be more expensive than a 645 afd.
To the people getting into this looking for a beginner 645 camera DO NOT SPEND more than 450 on this camera (body alone). A fair price would be 350 in my opinion.

I would avoid the 645E, there is a reason there aren't many for sale. Most don't work anymore, they are higher priced likely due to not many survive. The M645 & 1000's are well made and last they also are much less money. If you wonder why they don't last look on the bottom, made in China. Not just from China but made back when the quality control was even worse than today. If you want plastic move up to the 645 Super, looks similar but made in Japan. You can pick up a M645 for under a $100, I have found the sharpest lens to be the 70mm.

Where can you get a M645 for under $100? Can you send a link?

@@steveshaeffer6850 Prices have gone up since 8 months ago however deals pop up and seem to be lowering, when I said $100 I was referring to a body. You can still find a body if your patient for that price. I just picked up a 645 1000s with a metered prism for $285, since the prism runs around $140, I picked up the body for $145 a newer more advanced model then the 645. If you are inpatient and want a camera now it will likely cost you, however with patience their are deals out there ,however ,the 645E will never be a good deal unless someone gives it to you.
