    FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
In case you didn’t already know, the goal of a film is to be seen by an audience. It is exceedingly hard to achieve this goal without a film distributor. Today, we talk with Susanne Jacobson, a veteran theatrical booker who walks us through how the beguiling process of obtaining distribution works.
    DISTRIBUTING INDEPENDENT FILMS
First- what is distribution exactly? Jacobson illuminates the oft-misunderstood (or under-understood) subject for us. She discusses the steps that are needed between a film’s final cut and playing it on a movie screen. Spoiler alert: the steps are many, and they can be tricky. Jacobson also defines her role as a theatrical booker- a key position that every filmmaker should understand.
    DISTRIBUTING YOUR FILM
The million dollar question for most filmmakers: how do you get film distribution? Jacobson gives a frank answer. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. She touches on different possible avenues for indie artists, including festivals and markets. But she is also careful to emphasize that these days, a theatrical release is anything but a guarantee.
    FILM DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY
Last and certainly not least, Susanne Jacobson gives her own advice for indie filmmakers. In a nutshell: getting distribution requires a lot of planning. A filmmaker should be thinking about the stage before they even begin shooting a project. What is their audience? How can they best reach them? This will affect the entire filmmaking process.

It seems like the interviewer doesnt really understand what this woman does. She clearly works FOR distributors or filmmakers who want a limited theatrical release; why isnt he asking her how THAT process works?

Uh..... the mere fact they had a-list talent alone is about 95% the difference. It's really not a fair take that compares with the majority of indie filmmakers trying to do what they can on what budget they have - and it's very rare that any b to a list talent would hop on a small indie film or short without a lot of $$.
