    I think it's totally reasonable that you talk briefly about your books at the end. it's a good way for you to get the word out about them, and after all, you are giving us a lot of free drawing instruction. Thanks a lot for the video.

    Mark, do you ever do background wherein the vanishing point is off the paper? Is that even practical?

    • @sharathkumar13
      @sharathkumar13 10 лет назад

      well... even in this sketch, if he uses a smaller frame, the vanishing point gets "outside"... like by cropping this pic so that only the landing pad is visible.. the vanishing points exist, but they are off the paper, so to speak...

    • @Bergzore
      @Bergzore 10 лет назад

      Sharath R Kumar
      Yeah but it can be awkward depending on your drawing environment. I was just wondering if artists do that a lot.

    • @Bergzore
      @Bergzore 10 лет назад +1

      Sharath R Kumar
      I guess it's kind of a stupid question.

    • @RobotGustaCake
      @RobotGustaCake 10 лет назад

      Look at his 3 point perspective video. That has one which is off the paper, kind of.
      However, you've probably seen it as this comment is 4 months old.

    • @Botandarun
      @Botandarun 10 лет назад +7

      Bergzore It's not a stupid question, it's a very good question. I often find perspective tutorials like this one not that helpful because they never explain how to get started: where to place the horizon and vanishing points to get the angle you want. As soon as you want a more realistic background with soft angles or any kind of closeup, the vanishing points will often be outside the frame. Here Mark is drawing a very zoomed out city, that's why the VP are inside the frame. If you wanted to show just one of those buildings, you would have to crop the picture and your VP would be outside. Now when you draw comics, the format is smaller so often even if your VP are outside the frame, they're still on the paper. It's not impractical at all to work like this. When I draw backgrounds, I use larger formats (often 11x17) and my VP are almost always outside my paper. What I do is draw my vanishing points on little pieces of tape on my table on either sides of my paper. I also tape my drawing itself to the table so everything stays at the same place. Sometimes, especially if I need to take my drawing out with me while I'm still working on it, I'll tape pieces of paper on my drawing, like additional folds, and draw my VP on those.

    It's great that you made this deathstar kind of drawing because it's mainly straight lines, which helps understanding 2-point perspective a lot!
    But it would be cool if you could do a different kind of environment, I'm very lost on how you can draw something not made out of straight lines with 2-point perspective.
    Like a forest, as the top-rated comment suggests.
    However you must be very busy, it would just be very, very, very cool!
    Keep doing what you do, respect from Finland.

    Very nice. I could not stop thinking of the mathematics behind perspective though. (I am damaged by studying computer science) The angle at the viewpoint, which is the surface, of the two lines in two point perspective is the field of view. So it can be chosen based on the distance and the size of the surface in respect to the viewer, as a human being has 180 degree field of view, such that the angles coincide, and thus being perceived like a window rather than a flat surface.

    To everyone interested in perspective - in reality it's very rare for the two points to end up so close one to another. They can be meters away and our drawing surface of course isn't that big. So the important thing (for this kind of perspective) is for the lines to meet at some point - it doesn't have to be on the paper or whatever you're drawing on. I hope this helps. Thank you for your time.

    If they exist, can you show us the preliminary sketches of miki and brody before you settled on their final appearance when you were learning to draw in that style. Sort of 'The Road to Miki Falls/ Brody's Ghost' type of video.
    Love the background and perspective videos.
