Do I enjoy the game? Well, uh, let me put it this way. I have 20 characters who are all level 65. As you start approaching max level the game adds more systems so max level isn't really max level. You have a duty officer system where you collect various crew members and can send them off on away missions, assign them to research and crafting, or assign them to ground and space active duty slots to give various boosts or bonus abilities. Over time you gain bridge crew for science engineering and tactical and can give them their own gear to act as NPC part members for ground missions or to be assigned to different seats on the bridge with different ships having different layouts for how many seats there are and what kinds of officers can be assigned to each. For both ground and space those officers can be trained in a LARGE number of different skills and different ranks of those skills. On top of the normal skill trees there are specialization skill trees you can level up in and gain extra active and passive abilities for both ground and space. You can switch between what specializations are active between mission but you can only have one primary and one secondary tree active at any time. So it is possible to grind enough and max them all but you have to pick which ones you think will be the most helpful for what you expect to be doing in a mission or just match up best with a play style you have chosen. And then there are reputation systems that can each be leveled up by doing task force missions with small groups of other players and earning marks to advance a reputation. For example, do missions against the borg and earn marks to advance the borg reputation tree and unlock passive abilities and equipment themed around the borg. Again, you can max out every single reputation system but you have limited slots for those passive abilities so you have to choose which ones suit you best for space and ground. And then you have admiralty missions. Once you are high enough level to be declared an admiral you can send off your ships you have collected to do missions. Everything from shuttles to carriers. If you have it unlocked as a ship you can use it can be sent off on missions. There are a LOT of ways to spend money in this game and I wouldn't begrudge anybody spending some money here and there to support the developers and keep the game going. But anybody who thinks they can just grab daddies credit card and pay to win is in for a severe shock. I have seen players with ships that cost 60 dollars (assuming bought with real money and when they weren't on sale) do so little damage they had to be carried through missions by players in ships that were unlocked for free during normal gameplay. How you build you character matters and how you equip and fly your ship matters. Also compared to most MMORPGs this one is remarkably generous. My first character over 10 years ago was a Ferengi engineer and in keeping with Ferengi tradition I have never spent a single cent of my own money in this game. Like I said I now have 20 characters. Over time they have added mission rewards including nice gear sets that can't be bought, Summer and Winter events that have lots of things to unlock including a new ship (every year) that unlocks for your whole account, the annual first contact celebration that also has an unlock for a new account wide ship each year, and the last few years they have been running year long campaigns where if you do enough during the small events through the year not only do you get the rewards from those events but you can also get 2 coupons to pick 2 ships out of the store for free for your whole account. And then at least once a year the do a few days of giveaways in the store making certain items free to unlock for your whole account with the final day usually being a ship. So yeah, you can get 5 or 6 top tier ships for free every year on top of all the other fancy goodies. And if all the giveaways aren't enough you can take any dilithium you have earned and refined and list it on the exchange for other players to buy with zen to buy things in the store without ever depositing your own money to buy zen. It absolutely will not be a fast process but eventually you can buy everything in the store.
As someone who has played this game since beta, I loved hearing your point of view on this. I really enjoy the game and the end game is a lot of fun, can be a little grindy to get your stuff setup right and the lockbox system I don't like but I enjoy running the queues since they are a lot of fun.
pro tip, If you press B key on your keyboard it puts you into shooter-mode, that makes the ground combat a lot more easy/fun. Also for the ship colors, you need to click the Advanced key in the ship customization, there you will see things like other ship materials and other ship parts, Say you have a Constitution class, you can change the Hull, Saucer or Nacelles to be that of an Excalibur class. Essentially you can kit-bash your ship to be unique. However the TOS starter ship can't really be changed. Once you hit level 10 you will get one free ship. (For the Engineer career, I recommend the Constitution Refit) The controls are clunky at first but STO is about the only MMO that I can tolerate. I love the game so if you have any questions just ask and I'll be happy to fill you in. To answer the question in the title, Yes it is worth your time. At least compared to other MMO's
As someone more experienced with the game (max level on one character, and a number of less-leveled ones), The one major point I'd note is that if you press the 'advanced' buttom in ship customization, you can add patterns onto the hull which are in the colors that you can customize. Beyond that, honestly not a bad review, imo.
The real pain comes with the end game. STO is fun in early levels, then drops the ball hard in end game. Reason is over monetization, selling people power ships and traits, which in turn makes most of the combat trivial for players with powerful builds. In turn people compete for something to shoot in late gam,e missions or just wait for timers to finish.. Also some stuff STO put in lately is so ultra bright that it keeps other players from seeing their own ships and characters. It was once fun MMO, now it is a visual flashbang with a P2W cash shop.
It was always like this, but like in past you could ignore p2w stuff becouse you can get some stuff by grinding dill and buying stuff with that, and there was new content in past, curently, in last 2 years 0 new content beside like few episodes, game is in maintanance mode ran by like 3 dev's.
Great video (right with you on the ladders). Had to retype my comment, maybe the old one will show up someday. My main character played days is over 356 days (that's over 12 years, playing since beta). It's the people and fleet which keeps it fun IMO (though the game has alot to offer).
I'm hoping STO gets turned around, it was my favorite MMO. But, this game is on Life Support. The new emphasis/business model is to milk the whales for every penny they can. Supporting this is they hired a Graphics designer to create things to sell to whales instead of a Software Engineer to fix bugs and pave the way to create new content. I've been away for about 3 years, keep checking back to see if things have changed, they have only gotten worse. If I were to come back, this is what it would cost me. I have 56 characters, each with their own unique ships (yes I had a lot of fun back in the day). First, I'll need Elite Captain Training Token's for each at $10 a token for $560 Next I'll need 4 Elite Bridge Officer Training Token's at $3 each or $12 per ship crew for $672 Fortunately all my ships are T6X So to come back will cost $1,232 for a game that is no longer in development. This is what the Life Support phase of a MMO is, pure greed. The dev's slowly are let go, and all that money you are spending thinking you are supporting the game instead goes into someone's pocket. It's about as close to fraud you can get with out crossing the line. My question is, has anyone let Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Studios know how their IP is being abused?
It's not a bad game, but the Star Trek franchise needs a LOT better than this. It is 2024 for goodness sake. The loading times are like cassette level. Lockboxes are way past sell by date, and the sheer amount of fixes that create bugs that are never resolved is frustrating. I do still play after all these years, but never more than about 30 minutes a day. It's kind of sad. A game of the future programmed way in the past.
No game has kept me playing longer than STO. I even quit WOW after 6 straight years, but have been playing Star Trek for 11 years.

Nice to have you back!
“ Knowing which is the hurty end.” Fave phrase here
Once you get to the future there's a lot of ground combat available to you. There are DPS builds for your character and away team too.

ty. saved my time, and I love the storytelling

Glad you called out the hull patterns, also noted that :D.

One of my brothers even commented: "I enjoyed watching him heal people with woo-woo noises."
i love this game!

I don't know if it counts actually. But this is my series and I make the rules. I'll put it on the list. Why the heck not?
Thanks for these videos lol
I played this on PS4 for a bit & hit a paywall/have no idea how to actually play MMO's, then I tried to login on PC but I have no idea how

Random Recommendation Stalcraft
That's very random. But I'm kinda interested.

NO no it's not worth it at all. As someone that played it for years including when it was first released I have to say no. Don't bother.
Play Albion online!
Try maplestory.

I don't know what this means. All my reviews are bad

Have you considered The Secret World? I had fun with that MMO. Super fun. And I hate MMOs.
