  • I vacuum seal a lot! So when I read this tip on Suttons Daze #ProjectPantry Facebook page, I was excited! I have a wonderful vacuum sealer, but it is large and heavy. To take it out for one or two jars is kind of a pain! This little tool makes it much easier!

    So funny to hear you say you were burning out foodsavers. I was having the same trouble and I also finally bought the Weston Vacuum Sealer. Very happy I did!

    I've been using the handheld vacuum sealer for about a year and I love it. I keep flour, sugar, brown sugar and cereal in 1/2 gallon jars for everyday use and I seal the jars using the fresh saver. My brown sugar stays so soft now. Love it.

    Good info about the Weston. I have been disappointed with the quality of the newer Foodsaver machines as they don’t seem to seal as well as the older models did. When I seal jars with powdery things like pancake mix or ground flaxseed, I put a paper cupcake liner on top of the food before placing the lid on. That way powder does not get sucked up into the machine through the tube.

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  6 лет назад +3

      I do that too, and it works well. Coffee filters and paper towels work also. I was so faithful to Foodsaver, but it was so aggravating to be in the middle of sealing a lot of bags (I try to buy in bulk), and it wouldn't suction and seal! I finally broke down and bought something that was built to last.

    Great tip Vickie! A lot of people don't know that used canning jar lids can be reused for vacuum sealing as long as they are not bent too bad. You can even reseal commercial type jars like pasta sauce or pickle jars if you have the canister type containers by FoodSaver. I love being able to repurpose those type jars for dry goods instead of sending them to a landfill.

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  6 лет назад +2

      Me too! I even reuse the bent canning lids - I make shiny, wind chime type things to keep the birds off of my fruit trees and garden.

    Thank You Vickie! I am interested in vacuuming food. I care for several beloved dogs. I am very tired, often not remembering to eat or just not interested to eat because I'm exhausted. Meal in a jar is a really good thing. If I understood you correctly, I may purchase some from you, so I will be looking at your website. You are a great, caring Mom! Blessings!

    Hi Vickie, I am so sorry to hear that you are battling a cold!! I hope you can enjoy a lot of your home canned chicken broth!! I realize you may not be up to going into to town again but if you do, stock up on elderberry syrup. It is just wonderful for shortening the duration of a cold. You can also make your own if you can find fresh or dried elderberries. Feel better soon! Thank you so much for sharing this information. This was fascinating. I just got a dehydrator so I am new to all of this. I am looking forward to vacuum sealing my jars of dehydrated foods - and then re-sealing when needed without having to drag out my Foodsaver. And thank you for sharing about the Weston. When I need a new vacuum sealer, I am going to definitely investigate purchasing a Weston. Love, Mary

      Thank you Mary. I have been enjoying my chicken stock, and I have been taking elderberry syrup, along with using colloidal silver. I haven't had a cold like this in years, but this one got me! I have bought dried elderberries, and intend to make my own syrup, but wanted to use up the store bought bottle first.
      This vacuum sealing trick is going to save me a lot of trouble!

    I agree with you about the Food Saver machines breaking. I didn’t know about Weston and will be looking into that machine. On a side note, you can also use a hand pump automotive brake vacuum to seal the lids using the Food Saver lid attachment. The hand pumps cost about $25 and is a great backup in the event we should lose power.

    I was about to throw out my food saver because it wasn't sealing properly. It was abt 20 yrs old so I thought it just bit the dust. I ordered another one but in the meantime I did a little research on youtube and finally realized, just maybe, the gasket needed to be replaced. So I went ahead and ordered a replacement for abt $6. To my amazement it worked beautifully after replacing the gasket! Now I have 2 food saver machines....The attachment for the regular lid for jars still doesn't work but that's a manufacturers defect that needs to be addessed by the company. It worked for years but all of a sudden doesn't anymore. I thought maybe the gasket for it needed to be replaced also but not to be found. : (

    Ok, #1, bless your little red nose, #2 back there 0n your counter you have the same bag of flour, that I buy at walmart , I really like this flour, and it a good value. I like the hand held vacuum sealer, I need one , do you like that brand , any advice on hand sealers?

      #1, you should have seen it yesterday! #2, yes I love that flour! I love that it is non-GMO. My regular grocery has it, but I buy at Walmart much cheaper, one of the few things that will make me stop there! Although I just learned about their free pick up service - I can order online, pay, then schedule a pickup time for them to load my shopping!!! Yay! I'm gonna be trying it soon! The hand held that I bought is the Foodsaver Fresh Saver. I got it at Walmart, but I put a link below the video for Amazon that costs a little less. Besides, it's red! I did find that I had to let it completely charge before it would work though.

    I'm looking for one that has everything already to do the job. can you recommend a better one than the one you got from Walmart ? How long does it take to remove the air, you mean there is no way to tell except just stop it and check, they don't make one that shuts off when all the air is sucked out ? I would gladly pay more to get one like that...
    I have a brand new bag sealer, only used couple of times, a bit too complicated....is there just an attachment that you buy and hook up to machines like this to suck out the air ? I think I purchased it from QVC. that was not mentioned at the time.... and I don't recall it having any attachments to it, and have misplaced the booklet that came with it.....any info appreciated.... thank you for your help...

    can you tell me if you can buy replacement batteries for it ?
    also could you tell me what kind of batteries it takes?

    thank you,

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  6 лет назад +2

      It has a one year limited warranty. I cannot see any screws to open it, however there are a couple of places covered with white plastic caps that I am betting hide screws. I could probably be opened and the battery replaced if you wanted, although I am sure it would void any warranty if you opened it. I would recommend going online and looking at reviews. A number of people commented on the thread that they have had this and used it for that purpose for a while, so I didn't dig any further. But the brake bleeder tool works from everything I have heard, so you might want to stick with that.

      Hi Ashley, it looks like that hose is no longer available. I have been told that some people are successful just holding the FreshSaver against the jar sealer, but I wasn’t very successful at that. One end of this hose is a normal vacuum sealer attachment, and the other kind of looks like a drip system connector, but I can’t say for sure.

    So, you spent mega bucks on the Weston, only to turn around and but the weak, battery operated Food Saver hand held model. I thought you didn’t like Food Saver anymore. By the way did you buy the Weston on the advice of the Pantry leaders? You do know those 4 people have designated themselves as “the leaders of canning whom people look to for advice”. They also recommend nothing but the American pressure canner - more mega bucks. They make it sound like you aren’t canning correctly if you don’t do everything their way. You need to watch some of the other canners who aren’t self absorbed. There are many more who don’t make you feel you have to have the most expensive equipment. They also condemn those who do a little rebel canning but when THEY change the rules it’s because “they’re educated & understand what they’re doing”, like the rest of us aren’t smart. Ugh, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t go on. Remember, you have a brain, use it. Don’t depend on a group of 4 women who have an inflated ego. Try Linds’s Pantry or Homestead Heart - they’re down to Earth & you won’t spend mega bucks.

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  4 года назад +3

      You probably haven’t seen my video that I made about the Weston. That was a couple of years ago, and at that time, while I was still watching some of thos “Pantry leaders” (I really haven’t had time to watch much for a while), none of them that I am aware of had a Weston. In fact the ones I did watch had foodsavers. I did my research after wearing out 4 high end foodsaver machines. They can’t be repaired. So after doing my research, I decided on the Weston, because replacement parts are available, and it can be repaired. No more $200 every 2 years. It is great for most of what I do, but when I want to vacuum seal one jar? I am older (I am sure you can tell), and to lift the Weston out of storage, carry it across the kitchen, use it, the reverse? That thing is heavy! Much heavier than those little Foodsavers! So yes, I bought the cheap little hand sealer, rechargeable, battery operated for sealing a single jar. I’m not sure why you are condemning me for that, or why you are assuming that I am following those 4. And that includes one of the channels that you suggested, who at times has offered content that I don’t agree with. In fact, she personally (yes, I knew her personally) told me to reverse what I said in a video, because she didn’t agree with it. I didn’t. I am one of those rebel canners. I do my own research, then make my own decisions.
