Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I received my small mouth lid sealer today and was feeling like I received a defective product. I tried sealing what turned out to be a mixture of different jar and small lid combinations and nothing seemed to work using the Food Saver machine. Really disappointing! I watched a few videos looking for answers but everyone showed perfect operation and sealing perfectly the first time around which left me scratching my head.
I then watched your video and your video confirmed that it wasn’t just me and that you experienced the failures I was having. Then you went on and explained how you actually got it to work. When I tried your suggestions it worked. I even used my brake bleeder. Thank you so much for the explanation that went beyond the obvious. I only wish that I watched your video first it would’ve saved me time and frustration. Thanks again!!!
On a side note, I haven’t used my two month old raisin vinegar that I made based on your video because I haven’t tested it for acidity yet but it smells amazing! My ph test strips should be here in the next few days and then I’ll test and taste it. I can’t wait!

Thanks for sharing! As an aside note, Walmart sells a little athletic ball pump for around 2 bucks. The pump can be easily opened, valves reversed and turned into a great light weight fast vacuum pump. It has several tips, one of which is plastic and fits into the top of food saver for jars like you have in the video. I know your husband is right handy, he can figure out how it’s done. You can make a video about it! God bless!

Yes, that is what I do for the few very powdery things I vacuum seal but see no need for it on anything else. I have used paper towel pieces but from here on out, will only use small pieces of scrap cotton cloth like I do for making vinegar. That makes it cheaper yet :D

Hi Heidi, I've been canning for many years. Never would I'd thought you could put up dry goods. Thank you so much. I did find in some of my reg mouth jars, if it has a wider rim (glass rim) at the top it won't seal. Probably because the plastic cup won't fit all the way down. Love your videos!

  • @gladtidings4all

I vacuum seal in wide mouth mason jars all my dry powder goods like flour, salt, sugar etc. I just fill the wide mouth quart or half gallon mason jars with flour then use a round wood mallet and pack it down tight. Then fill again and pack it down. Fill up to the inch headspace line. Pack it down tight. I put a dry crush coffee filter covering it good put the lid and jar sealer adapter and vacuum away. I own the gamesaver silver Foodsaver which has a very strong motor and vacuums without problem.

If you are going to use the avocado in a few days...simple float the half you are not going to eat in a bowl of water, cut side/seed side down. I put a lid on it ensuring the avocado flesh is forced down and stays fully submerged. The principle here is the fat in the fruit and water don't intermingle and it keeps the air out so it doesn't blacken. : )

Yes if you use TWO lids on a Regular jar it works better. Sometimes the extra one falls off and sometimes it sticks. I just leave the extra one on if it sticks. I still use them because so many things come in those jars so I don't have to recycle them. The lids are available again on Amazon 24.95 for both sizes together. Don't buy on Ebay where they are 50.00 each for some!
I put all my beans, rice, seeds, nuts and so on in these jars in addition to fresh herbs, cut avocados, soups, extra coconut milk and so on in the fridge.
Another idea for those who do not have the lids but do have a Foodsaver Canister (you can often find at Goodwill.) You can put your jar inside a bigger Canister, seal it with the Brake Bleeder and the jar inside will be sealed! Open the canister and remove it. ALSO great for Re-sealing jars of things I don't use often like Red Curry Paste or Baking Yeast and such. I close the small jars they come in, and put them inside a canister, or quart canning jar, seal it, then remove the lid and the little jar inside is now Re-sealed and will remain fresh much longer! I hope this is valuable information too! Great video! Thanks so much!

My hubby had a great idea to cut one end of the vacuum hose line for the food saver, push the end connector into the canning suction lid like normal and then shove the cut end into the brake bleeder line. it fits perfectly and I can use both hands to squeeze the suction pump.

Based on Christy J's comment, purchased the food saver hose line with the two connectors. But, instead of cutting off one end, we cut the hose in the middle (between the two connectors). Now we have two food saver hoses with lid connectors to insert into the brake bleeder and foodsaver vacuum lids...so if one connector breaks, we still have another. And as Christy J stated, you don't have to hold the connector into the foodsaver vacuum lid and it works great!

You can connect the brake bleeder tubing to the Seal A Meal tubing. At Advance Auto get a package of Assorted Vacuum connectors. (Dorman 47432) One of the connectors in the package will fit inside the brake bleeder tubing and will go over the outside of the grey nipple on the Seal a Meal tubing. Since they are not marked, you will have to fit to find the correct one. Works like a charm. Thanks to my husband who took one look at the set up and knew how to fix it.

TO KEEP THE 'SEALER' FROM ACTIVATING: all you need to do is release the knob you have to press down on the right as soon as the air stops (the loud noise). The sealer function is not necessary to sucking out the air. It's only for sealing the plastic. Sucking out the air from the jars is what seals them. We make cat food for our cats a week at a time. Since the meat is raw, we vacuum seal the jars and refrigerate them. That does the trick! When I open them, the meat is still fresh even a week later. I haven't done it for longer than a week due to limited refrigerator space but we have frozen them and pulled them out of the frig a day or so before to thaw. Stopping the sealing process doesn't seem to harm my sealer, either BUT I think it WOULD harm it if I didn't stop the sealer function (it gets HOT) from activating when unnecessary.
    Hope this helps!

Yes, I know it is the sucking out of the air that seals them, that is why the brake bleeder works. Thanks for the tips, I do not recall if the one I was using in this video even had that option but I have since given up on Foodsaver all the way around, I ONLY use my brake bleeder now for vacuum sealing, far less money and has so far outlasted all my Foodsavers and works better as well. Refuse to waste any more money on them

You can find a vacuum hose reducer so you can use the original nipple that goes into the vacuum cap that goes over the jar. It's a splice that reduces from your brake bleeder hose to the smaller canning hose. So it will snap into the vacuum ceiling top. It would be a lot easier than having to hold that hose into the hole as you show in the video then you could use both hands to hold the brake bleeder pump .

If you boil the lid right before vacuum sealing, the rubber is more pliable and should improve your dry goods sealing success.

It's very common to find a working Foodsaver at Goodwill for $5 or $10. New gaskets are about $10. Buy bags at Costco. Also, just hit the 'PULSE' button, which turns on the vacuum, but does not heat up the sealing strip.

My upright FoodSaver is the only one that had that option. At anyrate, I have long since been done with FoodSaver. Tired of having to replace every two years so I have not used it in over a year now. I freeze things in jars and seal dry good in jars using my brake bleeder. That brake bleeder is a fraction of the price of a foodsaver and has so far lasted me for over three years, will be four years this summer, and I use it far more heavily than I did the FoodSaver

Why not take the hose from the food saver, cut off the broken connector to the food savor machine. It will connect the saver unit caps w/o holding then connect the open end to the brake bleeder. That way it's hands free on the jar end to use both hands to pump?

You should always take a damp paper towel(not a wet one) to wipe the rim of your jar and lid to make sure there isn't any type of dust on it before you seal. Since I have done doing this. I don't have problems of the seal going.

I was recommended to check out your site from SuttonDaze on brake bleeder vacuum packing jars. My question was how low to take the vacuum which you states was 15inhg or greater. Thank you. However I maybe can answer a question for you on why wide mouth jars seal better with this method then regular mouth jars. The larger the lid the greater surface area the pressure or vacuum is applied to. PSI stands for pound per square inch pressure and inhg stands for inches of Mercury vacuum. If you multiply the force you apply in the jar whether pressure or vacuum x the square inches of surface area, you can determine how much force is applied to your sealing area. Wide mouth lids have greater surface area and ultimately provide greater sealing force at same vacuum levels compared to regular mouth jars. I hope this helps and thank you for your terrific presentation.

You were the one who introduced me to vacuum sealing jars and I'm so thankful to you for that. I have a newer Foodsaver and it has a canister setting on it to skip the heat sealing process. I also notice on my jars that the small mouth jars occasionally have issues with sealing. And it drives me nuts that the blue band won't stay in the small mouth accessory! Hello, Heidi. ! I was just curious when you have nuts that you are placing into. Jars and vacuum sealing. Do you ever use oxygen absorbers? In the summer when you're getting a high volume of produce from the garden have you ever thought about using an outdoor solar dehydrator? Or do you have a solar oven that you would use winter and summer for outdoor oven cooking or baking. Have you ever used a rocket stove made out of bricks for cooking casseroles making soups and even frying meats or making a quick breakfast? I found all of my bricks in the area where they dump debris from a house that they tore down many years ago. I dug up enough of them and put them into the rocket stove formation. Now when I get motivated I go outside and I cook up casseroles. Heat soups but not that adventurous that I have actually cooked roast outdoors over the fire.
I used to volunteer at a thrift store. We got a food saver sealer in that was in its box as someone's Christmas gift to be resold. I bought it. But there were no directions. Now. I know what to do with those two covers that were included and that plastic tube. Thank you very much. I'm going to be trying it. My residence is in Southern Colorado and we have frequent power interruptions That's what had me motivated to start trying to make the rocket stove and cook outside. When the power goes out the large ranches are service first, so we could be without power for several days. Need to get those cows milked!. Plus. The cost of electricity here in Colorado is just astronomical. So I do have solar panels. I have to look and see if you have any solar panel advice. Or if you use them. Really Enjoy your videos. Keep on making them.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 года назад +2

We already have solar power so in the summer I run up to three electric dehydrators on our solar power. I do bake in a solar oven and use a rocket stove we bought years ago but know it is easy enough to build one from bricks. Thing I like about ours is it is very portable. I have several videos on cooking on the rocket stove and using our solar oven as well as showing the various ways I dehydrate.

    • @RainCountryHomestead

Yes, it would work well but I recommend for any powdery items to put a coffee filter or pieces of clean cotton tight weave cloth over the top of the ingredients before putting on the lid. This will prevent it from sucking the powder up under the lid and also then preventing a good seal

I'm unsure of the safety of that vacuum sealing seems to be a little bit better. where would I go to find out how long dried food will keep sealed or unsealed vacuum sealed or not vacuumed? I checked the government bored but their motto is when in doubt throw it out and I cannot waste food, nor do I wish to poison my loved ones. is there an agricultural place or instruction booklet or anything that I could learn to do this safely?
