I don't do carving but I polish my chisels on a coticule which is only 4-6k grit-wise but enough for my needs. I've heard good things about paper wheels and diamond or CBN emulsions. Green compound is just chromium oxide. You can make a DIY wheel from MDF too, it's supposedly almost as good as paper wheels. I haven't tried it myself since I don't do power sharpening in general.

Alexander! time is not money. You as a person have time, to design, develop, create. We are conditioned in a way to see time as a financial gain, but this is not why we are here. You was given the gift of carving so carve, you will all ways make money, but you need to relax and enjoy your gift. When all we see are dollars we have lost. cheers Robin.

Good Morning Alex. I use both leather and a sharpening machine for sharpening my woodcarving tools and knives. A short comment regarding the actual angle that becomes a problem if the tool is not held properly to the sharpening surface - whether leather, MDF or a sharpening machine: My only suggestion and what I do to keep the proper angle of the sharp edge, is that I simply go back and forth at a slower speed when using leather, so I can pay better attention to the proper angle. Of course if you use machines because you need to sharpen frequently thru-out a work day and/or for a living, not just a hobby-ist, machines are definitely an advantage in that they allow you to sharpen faster again, as long as you pay to the angle of the sharp edge to the machine's stone surface.
If I'm in a hurry to finish a project, I use my Tormek along with their horizontal rests and various sharpening tool jigs to ensure I keep the proper angle. Of course, as I believe you mentioned, the cost of these sharpening machines, may be too costly for some who do not make a living at it and can't write off the cost of the machine(s) as a business expense ....... or they have a spouse that says, "Say what? You aren't spending that kind of money just for a hobby!!" ....Ouch!! ..... So I purchased the Tormek T-8 late at night when she wasn't looking. LOL.

Hello Alexander. I have really been enjoying the videos and have learned a great deal about traditional European style carving. You mentioned the need to reshape and sharpen most new (as well as most used) tools and i know many beginners would really enjoy seeing how you do that. particularly on veiners, parting tools, and short bend gouges. Commissoning some of those new Schaaf carving tools would be a good opportunity to show that. I have some of the Schaaf tools by the way and really love mine. Thanks again for promoting knowledge and appreciation of the craft. Beautiful work,

I have found that using a heat gun to warm the leather before charging, it loads up so much better.

Alexander, thank you for the demonstration. A bit of advice for your worksharp, it is likely rocking because the 4 long bolts that hold the plastic bottom are either two tight/loose on opposing sides. They will torque/bend the bottom base making the bottom sit unevenly. I took apart my worksharp and when I put it back together I ran into the same issue. To fix, you can adjust the bolt tension. Your best bet might be to slightly loosen the tension on the bolts where their reflective sides are not touching the base. They are tight enough to lift up those "corners" making it rock back and forth.
