  • Cliff Gallup used Flatwounds, Grady Martin did (I believe firmly!) and many others surely did including Scotty Moore and Chet Atkins, but you wont expect to hear Brian Setzer using them! Are they a thing for rockabilly or best kept for jazzing? I know I enjoy a good flatwound string, but often find myself switching back to rounds. Checkout my demos and let me know your thoughts!

      @@AdrianWhyte Indeed. I even dare to go deeper. I used to believe in the "all mighty God" concept (that beard man that sees and knows everything, all the time, about us), but then I realized that the "God(s)" depicted in all human religions are "tinted" with severe human flaws.
      That gave me some "hints" that maybe such "God's" were idealized by us... maybe we created those "God(s)" at our own image and not the other way around... but then, suddenly, the "dimensions" theories are ground to some credible and inexplicable experiences (that some people talk about) like; energy beings that may be self-aware that can cross dimensions. If we think about it, even we, (humans) are biologic CPUs and our thought are nothing but energy impulses traveling trough our brain web (synapses) forming our identity (what we are).
      Taking all this into consideration, I then realized that, we have finite brains, so how can we try to understand what is infinite with our finite brains? By the way, or senses can only "see /listen" into a small percentage of the spectrum (even using tech to help).
      Maybe it is fair assume that, we (humans) may only know and can "see" a very small percentage of the fabric of Universe that surround us.
      Picture this: You now are a blood-cell inside a human body. You know all about that "universe" (human body) because you are aware of it, you travel inside it, you see and go to all places inside it, now tell me, how could someone make you understand what the stars in the night sky are if your universe is inside a completely different reality... even if someone would try to explain all about stars to you, your senses wouldn't allow you to have glimpse of that outside universe.
      So, maybe all those things that we know nothing about, may fit perfectly into that "large percentage" of the unknown (to us) fabric of the Universe... meaning that; The Universe has space for "everything" to exist. I stop here. Hope that I gave you something new to think about. Stay safe.

    The flatwounds seem to have a warmer, deeper tone. Kind of tames the steely highs of the round wounds.

    I personally like flatwounds on my Esquire (a rewired 90s Mexico fender with a Seymour Duncean pickup) and roundwounds on my Gretsch 5420 and my 50s East German jazz guitar.
    When I first played flats, I hated the feel of them, but now I really like it.
    But i don't know if I'm just imagining it or if the fault is mine, I can't play dirty/distorted with them, it just doesn't sound good.

    Really interesting video, Adrian. Love this guitar. I like the regular wound for straight up rockabilly (slightly dirty strings even better?). But when things start skewing country, Merle/Chet, Western Swing, I like the flatwounds. Especially middle and neck. I like the different sound of the pick attack and the percussive nature of the bassier notes and chords.
    Really interested in how my Tele with Texas Specials (Br and neck) would take. Definitely worth the $25 USD price of admission!Also, I wonder how pure nickels would sound on the Duo Jet. I’m thinking great.
    I’m finding small changes in setup make monster changes in playability and tone. So polish those frets, folks. Again, aces!

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  8 месяцев назад +2

      I think I had pure nickels on my 6120 and they were fantastic! What were they?! Regular wounds but a darker or brighter tone? I can assure you your tele with flats will sounds great. Bright bitey pickups sound especially good with flats I reckon, because it’s a SUPER vintage tone
      Agree with your sentiments about rockabilly and then the older stuff!! Well said!!
      Have a great day Richard and thanks for commenting :)

      @AdrianWhyte The Algorithm is truly a humbling place. I'd just started looking around for flatwounds while also searching out some R'Billy tunes and this popped up in my feed 😀 Nicely done, though a side-by-side edit is always nice for these A/Bs.
      You said nright & bitey/ Dynas w flats. What would you say w/ P90s on my Epi 295 gold?
      Read an interview w Scotty where he said he always played flats, which makes sense for that percussive thing he had goin.

    Interesting video. I think the string/pickup combination is important. Flats + dynasonic single coil versus Flats + filtertron humbuckers.

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  8 месяцев назад

      Absolutely - Bucky Pizzarelli used flats + filtertrons and it’s a very buttery sound, a little too buttery for me as a player but loved listening to it!

    man those flats create a weird semi-muted pop sound when picking (Way more obvious on the bridge). Sounds almost like you're chicken picking with a towel shoved in a hollow body. They sound way better on the neck where there is already a fuller low frequency zone and the snap isn't as noticeable. Either way... not a fan of those flats for rockabilly. They just down have the bright gretsch twang I like. Bad@ss video though, man. Keep it up

      @@AdrianWhyte thank you Adrian. Im a blues player converted to rockabilly and use flatwounds only on my 6120. So I'm used to bending up a lot. I'll put some roundwounds on and see if I get the attack and bend that I'm used to. 🤝
