Shane was the first NPC I got to 10 hearts with, and I instantly fell in love with the game because of his story. Although it's a pretty simple plot, that's all it needed to be to hit hard and keep players engaged. Giving gifts and such in order to see the next heart event makes for an exciting break from stressfully filling sheds full with kegs or trying to get to level 100 in the skull cavern. My issue with animal crossing (specifically new horizons) was how samey it got pretty quickly as finishing the game is not particularly difficult and with not being able to make different save files and instead having to wipe the game and start again from scratch made it get kinda boring pretty fast (granted I managed to squeeze 500 hours out of it in lockdown so the 60$ was well spent). But stardew valley has so much more variety in things to do, and is overall a much more well rounded game. Especially with CA's openness to mods and such, I don't think stardew will ever get old. Crazy how a single guy managed to out do Nintendo when it comes to farming simulators...
