American Spirit - Rainy Night in Duluth

  • Georgia may have a lot of rainy nights, but Duluth, Minnesota has its fair share too... especially this spring!
Here is the American Spirit seen departing from Duluth, Minnesota late on the evening of June 2, 2024. She had just completed loading taconite pellets at the Canadian National dock and was outbound for Lake Superior, eventually making her way to Cleveland, Ohio to deliver her cargo. On her way out through the Duluth shipping canal, the American Spirit sounded out a captain's salute with her horn, with the Aerial Lift Bridge answering in return.
While we only had a light sprinkle at the start of the video, it quickly progressed to a steady rainfall. I spent most of my time trying to keep the rain off of my camera lens (and the camera itself), holding an umbrella in one hand and a lens wipe in the other hand. I'm not sure where the other hand came from that operated the camera, but surprisingly I didn't mess this one up too badly. The sound of the rain on the umbrella adds a nice atmosphere, approximating the sound you would hear if you were standing along the canal that night, taking shelter under your own umbrella.
You'll note that other people were quick to leave the scene once the American Spirit passed their position. We had waited an especially long time for the Spirit to reach the canal, as she was moving at a snail's pace making the turn. No doubt the crew was being cautious, making sure they read the currents correctly and got lined up right with the canal. While I had a rain jacket on, my legs were completely soaked by the time she passed by. (The umbrella was for the camera, not the cameraman!) But I think it was worth the effort. Fortunately I had dry clothes waiting for me back at the hotel room.
The 1004-foot American Spirit was the seventh of thirteen 1000-footers built for Great Lakes services. She was launched as the George A. Stinson in 1978, eventually being renamed the American Spirit in 2004. According to the American Steamship Company website she is "powered by two Pielstick 16-cylinder, 8000 horsepower (each), four cycle, heavy fuel-burning diesel engines. The vessel uses a conveyor system below its cargo holds to transport cargo to a "loop conveyor" system that elevates the cargo to the massive deck-mounted boom conveyor. For maneuvering in port, the vessel is equipped with a 1,000 HP bow thruster." She has a mid-summer capacity of 62,400 tons. Her 260-foot self-unloading boom can discharge cargo at a rate of 10,000 tons per hour.

The video is exquisite in every way possible!!! It captures the power & beauty of the American Spirit, the crewman working on deck, and it all moves me to think about everyone on board. I lift a prayer as she heads out into the rain & darkness of Lake Superior!!!

With the lighting, the sound of the rain drops, and the way the water looked, I was thinking that I was watching a video game. Or, more specifically, "there goes American Spirit with a load of taconite bound for the underwater city of Rapture. Couldn't help it, as I've been playing Bioshock 2. 😁

I felt the rain on my legs, learning that somehow a rain jacket doesn’t keep my legs dry. Who knew? 😆

Ah, the sound of rain drops falling. Making me a bit drowsy! The American Spirit looks so graceful as she glides out to Lake Superior through the rain. You can have your fancy nancy cruise ships, or those "Super Container" ships! There's nothing like a laker slipping through the night! Yes, I am seriously biased!

It's easy to see why the crew were taking their time, the canal looks choppy. Better safe than sorry
