Here is how the multiple engines work. It is called a planetary. And like planets, the rotate at a specific ratio to power the sun gear which drives the rear end. Some math if you are so inclined: science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/gear7.htm
This I understand. But twin engine dragsters another thing. Seems like it still only makes the speed of one engine to me. All they get would be more power
Planet gear and shafts go to each engine. SCS makes a hear box that takes all the planet gears and spin the sun gear connected to the rear drive shaft. The genius is in the gear box. The real struggle is keeping the engines firing on all cylinders!

can someone explain why the tractors seem to struggle when they are all full throttle? they accelerate fine from the stop, but can not continue at full throttle.
They’re probably reaching their top speed on these runs due to the drivetrain and gearing, turning it into an effective drag racer would basically mean completely re-engineering it
I love watching this. It's mesmerizing. These green power LEDs though, if you're there they're way too bright. Edit: what's that smoke coming from under the vehicles? Or is it steam? Why is it not contained? I mean, one or two tractors - okay, some kind of a failure. But from nearly all of them?
LEDs are bright. One sled maker told me he order the same lights every year and they kept sending them brighter panels each year. It does play havoc with the focus of the cameras. The smoke coming from underneath is blowoff coming off the engine.
Kind of. Is is drag weight not a brake per se. The weight compounds so it may start out rolling weight of 40,000LBs by the 200-250 foot mark it becomes close to double that 80,000LBs of drag weight. That is why momentum is the key to this motorsport.
Most of the pullers in this class do not stop. They farm, they haul, the sell seed, seed insurance, they work whatever they have in front of them. And then they have extra and they build things. They competed for season prizes and fame more than anything else. So this venue has struggled in the past but it is a great venue. But just like drag racing which they are known for, the stands can appear to be thin. But with all the good food and things to look at you tend to move around. I am completely biased and eat up with this sport. But check out my other Benson videos and see what you think of the fans in the stands. If I am wrong then maybe it is my wishful thinking. I do know this show is $25/$30k per night and as such they were going to a drag racing style top 3 take home all the money for 2020 but Carona happened. Thanks for tuning in!
(I do not follow tractor pulling.) I assume that all these teams have a way of testing, not just the horsepower/torque/whatever output of their tractors, but if they are capable of pulling a competition sled BEFORE they go to an actual competition...? I mean, what's the point of even _making_ these tractors if they know beforehand that they're never gonna make it to the 300ft mark???
They use a Dynamometer, Dyno for short. It measures HP to the wheel. There is always someone that's been doing it forever. A big star in this class was Ken Venney. He was a former drag racer and all-star in that sport and brought his bag of tricks to this sport. His old tractor is now the Screamin' D. Ken now runs a mini rod which has one of these types of engines instead of 6. There is always a new team that wants their name and sponsors on center stage. And like some races, this is more toward getting season points than individual wins. These engines are very well tuned some costing well over $100, 000. So it isn't always about building the machine, it is about keeping it together.
@@WWPTV But what I mean is there, like, a dummy weight or plow blade or some-such that is the same weight and resistances as the competition trailer that they test-pull at the manufacturing site _before_ they ship the tractor to the races? Or are all of these tractors one-use-only???
@@EVAUnit4A I have seen guys pull combines, dozers, tree stumps, you name it. The big thing now is hooking up to farm implements and dragging them over the field. Knowing full well they don't have PTO to turn the implements, it is still fun to watch. The dyno can simulate the load so it is tuned by the time it gets on the track.
I would guess approved sled is used at testing event. That way new and also seasoned competitors can tune their machines and evaluate correct settings. Track conditions also affect correct sled and tractor settings. I have seen test pulls by first competitor at race events to see if the sled is set correctly. It is of course interesting for everybody to see how the race goes and knowing too much beforehand is not so exciting. :D
sled has some mass, may be concret piece on top of them and after move start it move to front of the sled and press it down. Front side of the sled start to dig a ground and brake tractor very mach
actually,...The Slide Weight is engaged by the Driver/Weight Balance in the back Tractor which is why you see a guy in the big orange Tractor behind all the Pulling Tractors, his job is to correct stirring and let the slide weight lose and Dig into the dirt at each footing marked it gets harder and harder to pull until all the Weight has been dug into the dirt and each tractor will no longer be able to pull. Unless the Tractor is geared correctly and modified strong enough each driver will not be able to complete whats called "the full pull" which is indicated at the finish line.
Engine configurations is what makes them different. Also the different power plants are all trying to catch Hemispherical engines. Bret Berg and Chuck Knapp are the ones everybody is chasing. Brett makes chassis for this class and several others so he is leaving his mark in pulling. Knapp bought the Funny Little Farmall from Ken Veney one the most historic names in Drag Racing and Tractor Pulling. He changed name to Screamin D'.
The biggest thing is, they literally run what they brung. These modifieds have always had a championship consisting of many pulls across the nation. What I mean by run what you brung is. Some of these teams are out on the road for perhaps 2-3 weeks at a time. Something goes wrong with an engine, they just have to mend it up. The gear box they use to connect the 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 engines to the rear end actually allows say one engine to be creating 5000 horsepower and another engine to be only making 4200 and another to be making 5300. An engine might not be running "well", but has to stay on the tractor to maintain official qualifying status in the class. I've seen a couple tractors run all weekend limping one engine around all weekend. Most likely needed a sleeve put in the cylinder and just didn't have time to get involved with it out on the road between pulls that weekend. Then of course you have the rich guys of tractor pulling, just like in any sport. They just have a brand new engine assembly at the snap of their fingers. For those that don't have unlimited funds, like any sport, a 5th place finish 2 weeks in a row is better than a DNQ or DNF for a single track... On the same token, not one team is going to go a whole season without mishaps and or misfortune, so many times it all equals out. Suit up and show up....
So the thing on the back is a mechanical sled. It weighs 32,000LBs with no weights in it. As it was on this night it had close to 50,000 total pounds in it. When it passes a certain part of the rails, the part the weight box slides up, it passes a trip that lifts the rear wheels off the ground and puts all the weight and it becomes drag weight as opposed to rolling weight. It feels at that point like nearly double that to the tractors. So the idea is the tractors try to build up as much momentum as possible. So that they carry the weight the furthest to win the show.
They are pulling 58,000 pounds of rolling weight that doubles about about halfway down the track, then it becomes pure drag weight. Furthest one wins. Enough wins on the season and they become the Grand Champion. There are all kinds of leagues like this. Like Drag Racing with a mechanical sled tugging against them. This is the biggest fund raiser for a lot of event type places like this I'm told.
That is the distance in feet. The puller who pulls the farthest wins. The better speed you have going down the track usually means the farther distance. If you watch the weight box it comes up to the top of the sled rails at the exact place distance wise on each hook in a given class. Thanks Brucipher!
If I had the money I would build a unlimited modified machine and the engine would either be a Detroit 12V-71 or a Cat V-12. The Cat model would be called "Killer Kitty" or "Bad Putty Tat" and the Detroit machine would be called "Screamin' Jimmy" or "Buzzin' Dozen".
You work don't ya. Just takes time. Most of these guys and girls have worked very hard to afford this opportunity and some turn that over to their kids. I wish it happened over night!!!
It’s called a pulling sled. It weighs 32,000 pounds with no weights in the box. Each weight they add is 2,000 pounds. As the weight box moves up the rails it gets harder to pull. By the end of the track it feels like double the sled weight. In this class it is 50,000 pounds.
Great video thumbs up I had to look high and low for multi engine tractors you guys don't show them much anymore what's going on get out there and give me some good content I want the great stuff the six and seven engine tractors
Europeans might disagree, but no, no there is not! The smell, the sound, the power of raw Detroit steel shaking the earth beneath your feet is truly an incredible experience.
The weight is driven by the wheels of the sled, so its position depends on how far the sled has traveled. There is a transmission in the driveline, so they can make the box slower or faster, depending on the class that is hooked to the sled. They can also add/remove weight in the box and have some more "tricks" to stop the tractors. There is a very nice 2 hour "behind the scenes" series on Landpower tv, if you want to know more how this all functions: landpowertv.com/programs/part-1-110c95?categoryId=89409 & landpowertv.com/programs/part-2-5d8769?categoryId=89409
Can someone explain why a tractor with 4+ motors on it can't out pull a tractor with just one motor on it.... So often I see these tractors failing to run away with a win over a single motor machine.... The explanation could be amount of weight being pulled but that info is never given in these videos.
I am working with sled operators to explain this more: How it works, what triggers the box, the rear end lift, etc. So, I have seen multiple engines blow at the same time. The best Unlimited Modifieds run 5 to 6 engines and are just hard to beat at 2500HP a piece. Turbine engines can run up to 2200HP a piece but can only get 3 tops maybe 4 of them to run and still make 8,000LBs. 5-AUTOX2500 is 10,000HP vs 4-TURBINEx2200 is 8,800HP, so 5 engine setup just makes more power. At most I have seen 3-ALLISONx2000 making roughly 6,000HP. But at 6,000LB Light Unlimited you can get a set of dual Allison aircraft engines set up right, it can be hard to beat. Light Unlimited Modifieds run 2-HEMIx2500HP making 5,000 vs 2-ALLISONx2000 making 4,000HP. So any way you go, you are making more horsepower with automotive engines but you will go through more of them as there are more parts to break.
Not so much the power really. You can only get so much traction with a specific tire. Tire speed does help but sometimes it can hurt. These guys spin out before they choke. These guys are dragsters on dirt.
Yes. It is called a planetary. And like planets, the rotate at a specific ratio to power the sun gear which drives the rearend. Some math if you are so inclined: science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/gear7.htm

Blade Runner No shit? You mean it’s about more power? Of course it’s about more power. Speed can be achieved thru gearing.
every one of these machines is a marvel, a triumph of engineering and a LOT of money. Amazing.
Can't imagine how difficult it must be tuning a tractor with 4 or even 5 engines? It's hard enough to get one to run right let alone 5 in concert?
Planet gear and shafts go to each engine. SCS makes a hear box that takes all the planet gears and spin the sun gear connected to the rear drive shaft. The genius is in the gear box. The real struggle is keeping the engines firing on all cylinders!

@@cryptoshark7147 Oh yeah, you're right. I guess the winner is the person who can overcome that brake for the furthest distance?
@@nitro2199 yes, they start applying brake after certain distance
Kind of. Is is drag weight not a brake per se. The weight compounds so it may start out rolling weight of 40,000LBs by the 200-250 foot mark it becomes close to double that 80,000LBs of drag weight. That is why momentum is the key to this motorsport.
why cant they go full throttle right away? the throttle valves open up so late
traction

When clickbate is real:
great video as always. not that it is a big deal but brad benedict is from Marion Ohio.
It was right on the ntpapull.com results page. It wasn't in my spreadsheet I use to sort pullers. My bad! Thanks for the good words!

What size are those engine blocks are!?
I'd love to have one of them in the field priming tobacco that would be one hell of a thrill and rush
Eddie Watson did you need some farm work done 😂
"put one on my car and ill be happy" - that one guy
And kids this is what North Carolina is all about
Where does the money come from for these builds? Cant be from ticket sales.
Now I see why Dave Richardson's tractor was for sale.
(I do not follow tractor pulling.)
I assume that all these teams have a way of testing, not just the horsepower/torque/whatever output of their tractors, but if they are capable of pulling a competition sled BEFORE they go to an actual competition...?
@@WWPTV
But what I mean is there, like, a dummy weight or plow blade or some-such that is the same weight and resistances as the competition trailer that they test-pull at the manufacturing site _before_ they ship the tractor to the races? Or are all of these tractors one-use-only???
@@EVAUnit4A I have seen guys pull combines, dozers, tree stumps, you name it. The big thing now is hooking up to farm implements and dragging them over the field. Knowing full well they don't have PTO to turn the implements, it is still fun to watch. The dyno can simulate the load so it is tuned by the time it gets on the track.
@@WWPTV
Okay. Thanks for the info!
This is what I call a trackster😎
Now this is what I call, _a woodchuck truck_
I dont understand how thoes the sled work, does he slam the breaks or something?
sled has some mass, may be concret piece on top of them and after move start it move to front of the sled and press it down. Front side of the sled start to dig a ground and brake tractor very mach
@@vadym1316 oohhh ok thx
actually,...The Slide Weight is engaged by the Driver/Weight Balance in the back Tractor which is why you see a guy in the big orange Tractor behind all the Pulling Tractors, his job is to correct stirring and let the slide weight lose and Dig into the dirt at each footing marked it gets harder and harder to pull until all the Weight has been dug into the dirt and each tractor will no longer be able to pull. Unless the Tractor is geared correctly and modified strong enough each driver will not be able to complete whats called "the full pull" which is indicated at the finish line.
None of them seem to lack horsepower, they just loose traction. What make them different from one another?
Did the primary buffer panel just fall off?
How come at the beginning of the video they seem to do a full pull but do a sled reset for a couple of them. They all seemed to run straight.
It wasn't straight. It was how far they went. Anything over 330, the NTPA likes to tighten up.
@@WWPTV ok gotcha
Thanks 😮
How do jet engine tractors work because they're definitely not using the thrust from the engines
This a good beginners tractor? My friend told me so!
What does the thing on the back do to the tractor upfront
So the thing on the back is a mechanical sled. It weighs 32,000LBs with no weights in it. As it was on this night it had close to 50,000 total pounds in it. When it passes a certain part of the rails, the part the weight box slides up, it passes a trip that lifts the rear wheels off the ground and puts all the weight and it becomes drag weight as opposed to rolling weight. It feels at that point like nearly double that to the tractors. So the idea is the tractors try to build up as much momentum as possible. So that they carry the weight the furthest to win the show.
@@WWPTV thank you
Can somebody please explain what they are doing?
They are pulling 58,000 pounds of rolling weight that doubles about about halfway down the track, then it becomes pure drag weight. Furthest one wins. Enough wins on the season and they become the Grand Champion. There are all kinds of leagues like this. Like Drag Racing with a mechanical sled tugging against them. This is the biggest fund raiser for a lot of event type places like this I'm told.
Back again guys for the big hp video
Bet these monsters would put down a decent time in the 1/8 mile
Get em some slicks! Make it happen! I would film it. What is 10,000HP like with out 50K pounds of sled behind it? I would like to know!!!
WWPTV. Id bet not all that fast. They are geared pretty low I think.
Pulling 45,000LBs they run what 40MPH or there abouts. I would love to see em unleashed, but you are right it is different gearing for sure.
Light vehicle, 10,000 HP and some slicks that sounds like a Top Fuel Dragster to me
Yup. Pretty much. Just gotta figure out the gearing.
What do their numbers mean? Like, brad was at 319. 319 what?
That is the distance in feet. The puller who pulls the farthest wins. The better speed you have going down the track usually means the farther distance. If you watch the weight box it comes up to the top of the sled rails at the exact place distance wise on each hook in a given class. Thanks Brucipher!
@@WWPTV That's incredible! I wondered why the box moved like that, as well! Thanks so much for the reply!
I just hope they have air filters, those clouds of sand get realy close to the intakes when they get to like 300
What's hanging off the bottom? Breather lines?
They are hoses for the blow off valves.
Whats the thing on its back
It’s called a pulling sled. It weighs 32,000 pounds with no weights in the box. Each weight they add is 2,000 pounds. As the weight box moves up the rails it gets harder to pull. By the end of the track it feels like double the sled weight. In this class it is 50,000 pounds.
WWPTV whats the most weights you can put on the sled?
About 58,000 pounds. And maybe this more like that than 53,000.
this is what you do in Benson....nuff said
Great video thumbs up I had to look high and low for multi engine tractors you guys don't show them much anymore what's going on get out there and give me some good content I want the great stuff the six and seven engine tractors
Is there a more American sound?
Europeans might disagree, but no, no there is not! The smell, the sound, the power of raw Detroit steel shaking the earth beneath your feet is truly an incredible experience.
The turbines kinda reminds me of the dentist lol
They do? Well I guess I will think of that the next I go see the dentist man. Good one.
Yeah, gunshots in a school.
So exactly how do they determine how fast the weight on the sled is supposed to move forward?
The weight is driven by the wheels of the sled, so its position depends on how far the sled has traveled.
There is a transmission in the driveline, so they can make the box slower or faster, depending on the class that is hooked to the sled. They can also add/remove weight in the box and have some more "tricks" to stop the tractors.
There is a very nice 2 hour "behind the scenes" series on Landpower tv, if you want to know more how this all functions:

People that understand don’t need an explanation; people that need an explanation won’t understand.
Im guessing they use some kind of specialty drive to combine all the engines together?
Yes. It is called a planetary. And like planets, the rotate at a specific ratio to power the sun gear which drives the rearend. Some math if you are so inclined: science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/gear7.htm
Scs gearbox joins the engines and shaft to the differential. The planetarys are in the wheel ends
They use crossbox to join engines to single output shaft and centrifugal clutches to even out inevitable engine power, running speed and load differences. Nice system.
Magnacharger07 SCS Gearbox turns out some impressive stuff. I’ve been in their shop a handful of times. You wouldn’t even know the darn building was a machine shop driving by it.
They could benefit from different tires. Or is that not allowed?
