It is more of an album track than single, probably the main reason. It is not as strong melodically or direct as many of her previous singles, especially the sublime You Came which would be hard to beat. I think that was her peak in 1988, notwithstanding other good tracks she would go on to release through to the mid nineties, and I have wondered why her management/ song writing team did not have two or three similarly strong songs lined up to capitalise on the success of You Came and the publicity from supporting Michael Jackson on his European tour in '88 also. Four Letter Word is a good song but it lacked the immediacy of You Came as a follow up single.
