When I decided to write about my rich life experiences as a woman alone, living in Costa Rica, I came across this book. I loved it for all the reasons discussed in this video. Some years later, I went back to school. The renowned creative writing program at the University of Montana was challenging. What I’d learned from William Zinsser’s book On Writing Well was key in my achievement of straight A’s at age sixty five!
Such a great book to start your series with. That book continues to impact me. It’s the standard. One of the things I like about the book is that he will talk about editing and then show you the edited draft of a page of that book. It’s a constant go to.
Yes! i loved that particular part because it make it so much more REAL.. i felt like i gleaned more from those examples than almost anything else in the entire book!
it's so true man! when everyone's been given the megaphone of social media, you can't just rely on the gatekeeping of having reach vs not anymore - it's so much more important to actually have something worth saying and then learn how to communicate it effectively
Better communication erased my social anxiety. I used to never stand up for myself cause I didn’t know how to articulate what i had In my head to my mouth
believe it or not i've never read any of his other work! i really want to cause im sure i would love them though. Any specific one you would say to check out next?
I just subbed too. Excellent presentation, no fancy video editing just pure, quality content. Now I have the extra motivation to read this book that has been sitting on my shelf for more than a year.
Really like how you explained and justified your enthusiasm for this book. Made me want to read it! Agree with you about American writing (in general). Far too many clunkers are published where the book would have benefited from having 100-200 pages cut.
Thank you so much my friend, i hope you pick it up! and yeah, one of my brothers is a video editor who's just gotten into reading recently and he and i talk all the time about how people need to learn how 'trim the fat' lol ;p
It's a great book. I've read it twice and will probably re-read it again when I need inspiration. It's aimed at non-fiction writers, but anyone can benefit from his advice.
I read this book around 1980. I heard about it from _The Next Whole Earth Catalog._ It definitely improved my writing and I still think about it now and then.
that's so crazy Mark! it's shocking to me to think that this book was actually written almost 50 years ago! it just feels so pertinent to this moment in time! It's a great reminder that technology changes, but human nature doesn't! No matter what medium we are using to communicate, we still have all the same problems - so truly great books never go out of style! 😬
Excellent book, read it years ago; now have the latest version. Is there an audio version anywhere that's not abridged? Amazon / Audible are short abridged version, thanks. (5:18 "they have no character . . . ," that makes so much sense !)
I haven’t been able to find an unabridged audio unfortunately :/ I don’t know why that is though, makes no sense in my mind… and yeah man, the first time I heard that quote my brain almost exploded 🤯
I wish all books can structure like a cook book, list all the important key points, OR the most practical ideas, techniques, at the bottom of the page, give the author thought to those key points, telling why, how that related personal life and the community. Lots of books, especially self-improvement books are just circling the same ideas, empty words, never give any actually things they practiced in life. Really, I think reading biography could give more depth of how the person reflected on problems. Dive into those critical thinking, try to connect it to real life problems...
What if that person was indeed a pompous ass but when he meets people like most of us he puts on an act? So when writing then you should aim to hide your true character unless you know you’re likeable?

The Sense of Style by Steven Pinker is also very good.
Oh that looks SO good! definitely just added that one to the wish list :D
Thank you
