  • "Miles Davis made music that grew from an uncanny talent to hear the future and a headstrong desire to play it." So wrote a biographer and it speaks to the story of a musician so far-reaching that it requires six episodes to do it justice (and that's not even the whole story). From his auspicious presence on Charlie Parker's debut record and for decades to follow, Miles consistently led the way. The breadth of his influence is unequaled in all of jazz history.
    ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course in jazz history. According to one account, Garland walked out during the Milestones session over something Miles said, and the latter played piano on 1 track.

Who knows how true that story is, but it's not hard to believe. It kind of harkens back to when Louis Armstrong replaced his wife with Earl Hines. Can't imagine that went terribly smoothly.

@@chasesanborn Thanks. Apparent corroboration comes from the Red Garland entry in Wikipedia:
See the section 1955-1958: the first great Miles Davis Quintet.
I wasn't a great Garland fan, as he often played on the beat.
