Making a Rail Anvil Stand

- This video shows the process of cutting and gluing many layers of plywood together to create a stand for a short length of rail. I use this piece of rail as an anvil for small hammering and forming and I prefer to use the flat surface whenever I can. I needed a way to hold the rail with the flat facing upwards, and I designed the stand to be reversible so I can use the curved topside whenever needed.

Of all the rail/anvil videos I’ve watched, and there’s been a lot! I’ve never seen anyone utilize the already flat side! Everybody grinds down the round side and make a horn. I feel stupid for not thinking of this before. Thank you!
I just got a piece of rail after waiting years. As soon as I saw the underneath, that will do me a 21×5 1/2 flat plate that looks easy to clean up 👍.
I was wondering how I was going to shape a piece of tree for it. I'm happy I never started now because now I know how I'm doing it thx to Mr Paton and utube.
I might dress the top rail later if need it because it looks like a lot of disc,s and a steady hand

because you wouldn't want to use it for anything but soft metals.....it's annealed so it's much softer than the top..

the whole video is fluff. just have a machine shop flatten the top of the rail, and you're done, good to go for decades. my dad's been using a rail anvil for 30 years at least, without stupid ass wood to absorb the energy of impact and rot, crush, and loosen up. this whole idea is stupid. plywood? c'mon man, that's not how to build an anvil.
Beautiful work ..... ignore the negative and appreciate the positive...... With that said what you did shows. Its not aways about making it simple and fast. It's an art in everything. I have a piece of rail track. I don't think I would use the flat bottom because that part of the track has not been hardened. Only the top has been heat treated plus it has been hardened by the rail car wheels have hardened it further by the load of the railroad cars plus the heat from the rolling car wheels. The track top is pretty damn hard. Try cutting the train rail with a vertical saw with blade cooling lubercant. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to cut through. If you cut it to fast you will break the blade. I know I have broken blades before.

Necessity is the mother of invention rather than going and buying a major tool if you don’t have aces to one. You could make then blanks with an X-Carve too...if you had one.

Мне давным-давно (в 2003 году) повезло купить маленькую 3-кг наковальню, только ширина рабочей поверхности всего 30 мм, и в дополнение к ней у меня для больших деталей есть чугунный пригруз от стиральной машины "Вятка-автомат".

Тупость у не русских, много возни. Можно взять 1 доску и 2 бруска, доска снизу и 2 бруска сверху, обточить рубанком, склеить и на болты.

But there is a problem, only the top of the rail is hardened, not the bottom...
since the body is out of multiplex wood i doubt he will use it for heavy hammering or blacksmithing. but it's an easy way of building something for small work where brutal force is out of the question
You're right, but this will only be used for light-duty stuff, definitely no real blacksmithing work happening here.
that's okay ..the bottom is hard enough for delicate projects ...this anvil system is fantastic for jewelry shop

Now that was neat! I never thought about making up something like that. I've got a piece of rail coming in in a couple days that I am going to make an anvil out of. I'll have to seriously consider making up a stand like that. Great video!

This is a great idea, really clever. Something like this never occurred to me. I'm going to make one of these for a rail piece I just purchased. Probably overkill, but I think I'll use 10 ply birch for maximum strength, and modify the profile a bit for my preference. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you Richard! I grab this thing all the time, even for minor hammering work. Using some high-grade thick ply would definitely make the process easier, you'd have fewer pieces to cut and less sanding once it's all assembled.

@@PatonHaus Well, it's an anvil cradle. My anvil doesn't have a cradle and I can't imagine that it ever will. Like I said, what's the point? Tell me what I'm missing.
I want to use the flat side of the rail, this enables me to do that.
@@PatonHaus I'm sorry. What side of the anvil is made available by boxing it in soft plywood. How would it survive in an iron worker environment?
It’s not boxed in. The rail can be removed and flipped to have either side facing up. I’m not a blacksmith so it really doesn’t have to survive a whole lot. It’s rock solid, I wouldn’t classify laminated plywood as “soft plywood”.

Глянь сколько он инструмента, не всегда нужного использует, чтобы сделать из рельса наковальню. Ленточная пила - от 25 тыс. и далее, распиловочный станок и т.д. и т.п.
Андрей Бойко на авито наковальню можно купить в районе 3000 рублей. Это не так уж и дорого

Рельсу в тески зажал и тоже самое....
Подставка под рельсу из километра фанеры. Если хочется универсальности, проще вторую рельсу достать и ноги к ней приварить. Диз короче.

Very nice anvil stand.
I only clicked on this to say that it's completely stupid. you have there a perfectly good piece of steel, then you want to put it upside down in such a manner that all the force from your hammer blows are going to be absorbed by the wood underneath. I can see quite clearly that the narrow rail top will be driven down into the wood, crushing it, making things loosen up. try this: put the rail right side up, and flatten the top.
my dad's been using rail anvils for 30 years at least. he had a machine shop flatten the top, done. done. done. no problem or useless 'layers of plywood' to rot, crush, or cause problems.
I'll say this though, you certainly found a creative way to waste your time and resources. not impressed.

P.S. It's very obviously for light work, he's not going to be pounding out a long sword on this. And the grain direction of the plywood should be plenty strong not to crush under any force he's going to be putting on it. Yours truly a materials engineer. Lol
