Hip hop has a lot in common with industrial. In fact, plenty of old school hip hop artists are Skinny Puppy fans. Their use of electronics, especially sampling, are mutually respected

This is like the closest Skinny Puppy got to being radio friendly…but it’s fucking spectacular cuz they are masters of studio engineering while also having exceptional songwriting skills…Puppy has created some of the scariest industrial goth rock of our time. Check out TOO DARK PARK & Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse…these guys have inspired so many popular bands and they deserve the honor of RnR Hall of Fame…can’t wait to see them live again!!

Too Dark Park is Epic. Rabies was a favorite of mine. Warlock was another track that could have possibly seen a radio edit, though it probably would have almost been a ballad by skinny puppy standards 😂

Cool that you reacted to this. Haven't seen a reaction to Puppy before. This is kinda more conventional than a lot of their stuff. Their rhythms are usually quite chaotic. It helped get me ready to enjoy Jinjer though - a lot of their work makes Jinjer look downright melodic. :D Dig It is another that is pretty easy to listen to. Worlock (sic) is one that got a lot of play in clubs back in the day.

That song was great. I always loved their song Assimilate. I also know some of their earlier albums, which are pretty dark and have an eerie atmosphere. Industrial is a pretty cool genre, but also not for everyone. If you want to dig deeper, check out Throbbing Gristle, Foetus, Einstürzende Neubauten or Coil.

Skinny Puppy was one of the more widely known projects that often involved interchangeable & rearranged people each with different experiments & goals in mind. The Tear Garden, Manufacture, Hilt, Download, and several others from the Nettwerk music label. Guest vocals included such random guests as Sarah McLachlan (also on Nettwerk at the time) & Mel Bland. The members also bled into groups like Ministry, Revolting Cocks & more. Yhere was quite a bit of experimentation & some artists have commented that when looking back, it might've been more profitable if the label didn't green light everything... but they wouldn't have done as much that way.

Love to the Puppy! got to catch them on their Last Rites tour (at the legendary Mississippi Nights nightclub in St. Louis, now closed). The stage was adorned w/ prostetic limbs on meathooks. The vibe was real! Skinny Puppy were the godfathers of Twitch Industrial. You would love Meat beat Manifesto..they are the dancier side of Industrial. Another great industrial group is Front 242, Belgium-style at its finest. I'm so glad you mentioned Raves. My first show that my brother and I performed was at a rave in St. Louis, and we were super honored that some of the members of the Midwest Avengers break crew actually formed a break circle during our Live P.A. That was something that i will NEVER forget!

Skinny Puppy is definitely an acquired taste. Early SP can be hard but you can understand how they influenced much of what we understand as industrial today and the obsession with obscure samples for movies and TV. Their discography after VIVisectVI becomes more accessible and "The Singles Collect" is a good compilation of the first half of SP's discography.

Late to the game on this, but... SP has technically 3 eras, pre dwayne, dwayne, and post dwayne. I feel the new SP is an extention of the singer's solo project Ohgr. There was a side project that Cevin and Dwayne did called Cyberaktif. It also involved Bill Leeb from Frontline Assembly. Bill played keyboards for a short time in SP. If you want a new band that feels like hardcore punk meets electro industrial, Youth Code. You'll hear some SP influence in their stuff as well.

Fantastic reaction video. If you want to hear earlier Skinny Puppy, I suggest their song, Dig It from 1986. This song in particular inspired Trent Reznor to write and perform Down in It. The song structure and instrumentation are strikingly similar. Also, the band got a lot of flak for the video for Dig It with the urban legend that a snuff film plays in the background, which is untrue. Skinny Puppy are pacifists, very leftist in their politics, and even named their band Skinny Puppy as they were animal rights activists. Only recently have they decided to no longer tour together, though cEvin Key, their multi-instrumentalist, is still doing solo work and went back to work with his synthpop band from the early '80s, Images in Vogue. Ogre, the lead singer, is getting more into acting, having been in Repo the Genetic Opera before.

"their music is an acquired taste" lol YES. As an electronic musician Nine Inch Nails influenced me and led me to Skinny Puppy which was like "garage band Nine Inch Nails". These guys have been around forever and have been pioneers in several genres but are also notoriously kind of ripped off and screwed over by their record labels and collaborators. Pretty much every Skinny Puppy album has a different sound. Kevin Key (main musician), Dwayne (80's member that died of an OD) and Kevin Ogilvie (vocalist) have touched on a lot of different genres and are usually a little ahead of the time. From harsh noise, to industrial metal, to almost pop dance songs. From the very early 80s and still active today. Some of their side projects include Kevin Key, Ohgr, Tear Garden, ADuck, Download, Puppy Gristle, etc. They never seem to have any interest in what other people are doing or what scene they fit in. They just do their thing. An interesting follow up might be to check out the Ohgr music video for Cracker. Another more pop / dancey song but this one kind of points out NIN and others. I randomly bought a Skinny Puppy cassette 30 years ago and they kind of ruined most industrial for me because SP just always sounds more interesting and less cheesy than bands like NIN, KMFDM, etc. They were always the oddballs and always will be. People usually love them or hate them.

Even before that Last Rights was the final album they put out worth a damn.

Hip hop has nothing to do with Skinny Puppy!! It all statted with Drake and a few others ripping off their music! If you know Drake's music listen to the song Assimilate (Skinny Puppy) that is as far as they go relating to "Hip-Hop"
Don't let me detur you listening fom them because you said you like Industrial music. They are the pioneers then Ministry (basic thrash metal with electronics)
For Ministry start with the Album "The mind is a terrible thing to taste"
3rd listen to Front Line Assembly you will dig them, 2nd or 3rd album
This is coming from someone who grew up in this era and still listens to Skinny Puppy and now TOOL I love technical music!!!!! If you listen to them start off with the song Lateralus (pick out the fibbonaci sequences lol) Then listen to TOOL Pneuma the Vic Firth version (The whole band is super talented but the drummer is something special!!!!

That song and the fact that it reminds you of so many pop techno and numetal bands is gross AF. This is considered the absolute worst Puppy song ever produced. We don't know if it was a joke, or some strange attempt to appeal to new listener but it's ridiculous cringey and unrelated to the traditional sound and they never revisited ever again. I tried to pick their most mainstream song for your channel. I love all of their music, but I'm not sure how much you'd like their peak stuff. Worlock, Assimilate, Testure, Dogshit, Tin Omen, Tormentor.. I mean, they've got a lot of bangers, but they're an acquired taste like I said.

Yes this is extremely mainstream for them but still good

The crazy thing is, if you check out their early 80s stuff, anywhere from mind the perpetual intercourse up until vivisectvi, you'll hear a lot of early hip hop/breakbeat kinda stuff, but it is harsh and difficult to digest at first listen, so... just a warning. But if you can get past the layers of chaos and cacophony, you'll find some really brilliant composition.

They are my favourite band of all time. They are Canadian as am I, they are not that well known in north America but Germany, Europe they are huge.

Assimilate and Smothered Hope are among the songs that likely influenced Trent and many others because they are more at the birth of industrial. Also two of the best Skinny Puppy songs by almost any measure.

If you’re into checking out older things by industrial groups, Nitzer Ebb is another good one. “Getting closer” and “control I’m here” are good places to start.

Dig It (12" Mix) is awesome. Best album is probably Mind: the Perpetual Intercourse.

He wrote this song for street kids. But made jokes how they all got scabies out there and many were only out there cuz if my mom was the Liberty Posse Don she may have ordered all mothers to release their kids on the street which then they were allegedly trafficked and suffered and struggled as only teens. Around the summer of 95. They asked me to audition. For the Vid cuz it was a dance video. But due to high risk maneuvers on concrete I said no. And cuz I just don’t trust them.
So that’s the story behind the song. I haven’t done that storytime yet though. I have a few others.

Another thing I’ll add is we grew up as a VERY talented group of kids and many went into showbiz. Many did tv shows and such. Or were dancers. This Vid is basically what we used to do out there… just break into song and dance whenev. So it’s really representative of kids we grew up with at the time. It’s one of their better songs. It was meant to be an anthem for street kids. Except many he knew were being trafficked & such, & did little to hell them. Often harassed or bullied them. Like I said I think they worked for my mom. They were about 9 years older than some of us so they got to do whatevs. There were some fun times but a lot of really messed up stuff too. He used to chase kids around in an alien mask, around portland. Like he’s just show up wherevs you were at and pop out from somewhere and scare the crap out of kids… the same type of alien masks he wore in his recent farewell tour. Come check out my childhood stories with them. Except be prepared they’re not all fun stories.
Also Misnight Gospel might be a Netflix show Ogre sold. Like based on real convos he went out and had with people. They should pull it off the air cuz a group of people who worked for my mom also extorted rich & famous celebs. The Pop will eat itself song Preaching to the Perverted, was alleged about Ogre. It speaks of attempts to possibly extort Astley except they couldn’t find anything on him. It references a P ring of sorts. And other not cool stuff. One of my friends may have helped write songs for that band and may have helped on Beaver Patrol & May have predicted his own death in that song if you listen closely. He later died of an alleged overdose like their former drummer Dwayne Groettel, and both were friends of theirs.
      There’s a lot more.

@@TheAdventuresofTNT how bout something off the 4th album I say "shadow cast" or, "tear or beat" or "deep down trauma hounds".... Actually "dogshit" might the best choice... Its hard to choose one song as they werent a band that had big hit songs, id say they made their impact with a collection of songs putting out a staggering amount of music in a short time, 7 albums from 84-93 that are all groundbreaking and brilliant... (except for rabies in my opinion) all sounded like they should've taken longer than they did to make... Those albums are still kinda unknown and extremely underappreciated imo and really deserve some kind of attention... Sure they did some good stuff after that, but that was the golden age of skinny puppy, where they created something really special and unique that will last the test of time and still sound futuristic many years into the future, the creative hideous explosion of black bile... As a fan of music i hope you'll checkem out
