I was waiting for your home server's related video. Great 👍. Bro my home server is already running successfully. But now I am planning to move my application data from HDD to SSD to make it speed and better working. Please make a tutorial video about how to backup nextcloud users and data and all media and restore in the newly installed nextcloud server.
@@LazyTourer Thank you for your reply. I did it as per your previous tutorial available in your website "Self-Hosted Home Lab Server in India with CloudFlare Tunnel for external Internet Access" Posted on January 15, 2023 (Nextcloud snap,Docker Container,) Please help. Bcoz I'm planning to move the same installation to a upgraded CPU with SSD to be used for application installed. Thank you once again.
Hello Mr. Ramesh, In that tutorial we have used Snap deployment method to deploy nextcloud. Please note, it is really easy and single click or command to transfer between same deployment environment but when transferring between different environment, lot of work is needed to modify the database structure for each. Easiest way is to download everything from present installation. Then setup the TrueNAS, create new users and reupload everything for each respective user account. This should not be big trouble when you are doing within LAN. With gigabit LAN, it would have hardly few mins to download and then reupload again in new installation. In case you really wish to take the direct transfer route, here is the backup process of Snap Nextcloud -> github.com/nextcloud-snap/nextcloud-snap/wiki/How-to-backup-your-instance You would need to mount a TrueNAS dataset as network mounting in storage structure of Ubuntu Server, then transfer the backup via over to TrueNAS. Further on database migration is more tricky, since one may need to manually edit the raw DB to modify the structure. Refer Here -> github.com/nextcloud/all-in-one/blob/main/migration.md Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Thank you, 😞. I do not want to change my deployment environment. Since I'm not a CS man. It happened all by your easy tutorial. Okay I'll try. However you don't forget to come up with a new video/tutorial about nextcloud back-up and restore. Thanks 🙏
Hello Ramesh, Manual transfer of Nextcloud is not a bad thing. Infact, it is often recommended by devs to do a manual transfer to avoid any future bug or issue that may arise with attempt to a direct transfer. I would encourage you to do a manual transfer in your case. For backup and restore, we shall try to plan a video. But you are right, we should have included that in main video, but unfortunately it's already so long and any more information would have made it even longer. Keep an eye on the website, we shall publish a written article soon about Snap Nextcloud Backup / Restore and backup of TrueNAS installation also.. Thanks.
From personal experience, running truenas on usb stick is not recomended specially in hot environments like india. switch it to internal hdd/ssd as soon as possible if plannig to run 24/7. I have lost a HP USB3.2 pendrive and more importantly data, but I had backup taken just a week before so not lost most configuration data.
Hello, Thanks for the comment and bringing up the issue. Indeed, there is a general experience and idea among server admins for not using USB Media as TrueNAS boot / os drive as most our past experience, we have seen USB media failing often. I wont disagree to it, but if you look at what has changed in past few years, then this is kind of half true. Few things I would like to bring up here for the discussion. 1. Quality of the USB Drives 2. TrueNAS Scale boot drive iops and usage.. For business environment, where your chassis do allow 10/15 or more drives, you do have that luxury of sparing a disk or two for OS. And I agree with you, you should and must use an internal disk. Apart from this hardware failure issue, you really don't want something hanging out of the chassis. But please note, this video is targeted towards Home Server or very small business users with "Desktop" PC converted into a server. Availability of drive slots are really limited here and it is a waste to dedicate a full SSD for a 16GB or less OS drive. TrueNAS at its default state, wont allow you to partition your disk and that rest of the unused space is just waste. Secondly, with TrueNAS scale, advance logs and other high I/O activities are disabled / not started by default so R/W load in your boot drive is very limited. Also good quality modern USB sticks are more reliable than something we used to buy 5/6 years ago. Lastly, even with poor quality USB drives, one can mirror raid the OS drive at the time of installation. How much will it cost to add two 32GB USB and install the OS on those two as raid? Also, mind you, TrueNAS Scale allows you to take single click backup of your OS configuration. Which you can take only when or if you make any changes in TrueNAS Scale panel. Which we dont do often after a stable setup is achieved.. So, even in worst case, if the OS drive fails all of a sudden, just reinstall in a new USB and restore the config backup with single click. Done, you are back operational in no time. OS in USB is not always a bad thing, since if you may notice, paid software like unraid actually recommends using USB sticks for OS drive. I agree with you on this case, indeed yes, one should take the necessary steps needed to address the potential risks involved. I would be including this "warning" and the needed safe guards in future videos. Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Totally agree with you sir, just thought, if someone running it in hot environment(like in a closet) without AC, they should know that its not ideal Btw did not expected this long explaination in this short time😅, hats off to you 🫡 I am a student of CS and exploring new things and building homelab since a year, and today I found the first Indian youtuber covering homelab things Really appreciate your efforts and dedication to create such lengthy content and reply to every comment Coz, even I was thinking of creating content aroud homelab and networking as there not so much creaters in this field in india, but procastinated it due recording, scripting and doing everything again(it just makes normal 1 hr project to 1-2 day)
Well thats a lot of effort. This configuration, exploring, documenting, video creation could take more than a month. So kudos to the hardwork you have put in 👍❤ And thanks for sharing the knowledge of how we can access local network ip over the internet. Because in India all home internet stuck in double NAT so even with an advance router its impossible to access it over the internet. I will definitely try the cloud flare tunneling.
Hello Brother, Thanks for the comment. Matter of fact, being a creator yourself, out of so many viewers, you are one of those very few who can understand the mountain of work needed behind each of these videos.. Especially for hobbyist creators like us, who have full time work, family and then have to find time for creating video. As a single person, without any team, from RnD, testing, validating and then on to pre-production, shooting, post-production editing, it indeed take months to produce one single video. No wonder my channel is not doing good.. lol.. But thanks again for dropping by.. Those words are much appreciated.. Thanks.
awesome video.keep this series on. sir make some video on jellyfin live tv and truenas pool failed drive replacement. sir everything work fine in my setup but when i switch on and off my server (during long powercuts i switch off server and pc brfore ups discharge completely) its router assigned ip changes. sometime its 192.168......20 sometimes 25 sometimes 18. i have to reconfigure my tunnel eveytime. how can i fix it? well iam using it in windows hyper-v.
Hello, Thanks for your appreciation. Coming to your question, any device (including virtual device like a VM) connected to your LAN will ask DHCP Server (that is your router) for IP address from the DHCP pool. This is always dynamic at default, so every time your TrueNAS VM starts up, it gets a new IP from your router. If you watch the video, you may notice, we have spoke about it in TrueNAS installation process. There are two ways to fix the IP. #1. from TrueNAS Network Option #2. Via MAC binding from your Router DHCP Pool. In first case, you can edit the network connection in TrueNAS Scale, at network option to manually set an IP address, subnet / getway. Just like how you can edit a Windows Network adapter to setup a fixed IP. Same exact way. Otherwise, you can use the MAC Address of this TrueNAS VM and bind it to a static lan ip from router DHCP / MAC Binding option. In both cases, use a free IP address out of the DHCP Pool of the router. You can search the internet for video or guide about the both process since in case of router mac binding, steps would be different based on the software design of different branded routers. Thanks & Happy Self Hosting..
Hi, Pardon me but ISP given routers, especially Jio routers are worthless. Jio as ISP itself is really bad in heavy lock down. As per as my limited knowledge, there are not many options in Jio router apart from changing the WiFi settings (that too just SSID password). You may need to use TrueNAS Scale network settings page to edit and input a Static LAN IP at client END. I am, sorry to say, but Jio as an ISP wont even allow using any different router than their forced garbage. They dont have any concept of Internet connection only. In their entire Home user plans, you are forced to subscribe to CPE (their Routers) too. Thanks.
Hi, Could you please explain what do you mean by "TrueNAS itself"? Are you referring to the TrueNAS Admin Panel and wish to access the admin panel from outside? Thanks.
Hi, Yes, definitely you can do so. Kindly refer to the video at play time 50:55 You can create another extra Sub Domain / Public Host Name at CloudFlare and for IP, use the login IP of the TrueNAS dashboard along with port 80 under http protocol. Same process as like for other services. But ensure to use a very strong password for the dashboard admin panel of TrueNAS Scale and it is also recommended to disable the default admin user by creating a new admin user with some different name than truenas_admin or admin. Thanks.
@lazy tourer Very great effort!!! Even I had setup inspired by you. I want next cloud to see changes in file made to it through SMB share or network share.... so that those changes are synced everywhere else. But it doesnt recognize any changes to file or folder. Its working on Jelly fin but not on Next cloud.
Hello Mr. Varun. Thanks for your appreciation. Coming to your question, nextcloud can't directly read from the files present within its user data directory. Nextcloud for its advance file permission management, maintains a database of each files and their location. Unless the file you are writing within the user data folders are also updated in the database, nextcloud wont read or show them within its interface. Nextcloud is not designed to work like that. However, there are different ways to mount a SMB share within your nextcloud. There is also a SMB share mount and connection app within nextcloud's app store or you can also refer to their official documentation here -> docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/configuration_files/external_storage/smb.html For your info & reference, nextcloud.occ process is responsible for scanning the user data folders and updating the file list within its database structure. Secondly, Nextcloud supports WebDAV mounting. If you need to have direct access to your user data of nextcloud, it can be mounted to Windows or Linux or MACOS file system via Network WebDAV mounting. Further, Nextcloud comes with its own app, like GDrive. So you can also sync a Windows directory or use one way upload feature to copy from Windows/Linux/MacOS folder to Nextcloud. Thanks.
Hello, If you watch the video, we have shown stripe pool creation. During Stripe creation, we have added a single drive, but in your case, if you wish to use different size drives together, just add them all. This will create one single pool and allow you to use combined space of all drives added to that stripe pool But beware, there will be no redundancy in this use case. One drive failing would kill all data of the entire pool Thanks.
Tailscale although free to use goes via 3rd party servers although very secure but if exploited can expose your home network , WireGuard is a better option and also much much faster than Tailscale since Tailscale uses relay servers which may be slow and most importantly free to use . As for domain name just but a duckdns domain it is free to use
Hi, It will completely depend on your individual hardware & load. Every PC & it's hardware would be different so their power consumption would be different too Then you need to consider the load factor. Idle PC vs full CPU / GPU load would be different For this example, shown in the video with the said configuration, like GPU + 4 RAM Sticks + 3 Mechanical Drives & 1 SSD, idle consumption is around 25/30 watts If you do the math, monthly idle cost is around Rs. 250/- with Rs. 10/- per unit electricity. But there are those load times, it's not always idling. One can use Smart Plugs like this -> amzn.to/41Hb37N or power meter like this -> amzn.to/4gJe8bU to accurately track the exact weekly of monthly cost For this example, in my use case, it's around 300 to 350 monthly electricity running cost Varies depending on summer vs winter as runs cool in winter so fans run slow etc Thanks
Hi, If you have Public Static IP, then you can access each service via port forwarding. However, during installation of server apps, like Nextcloud, PhotoPrism, Jellyfin, ensure to turn on the TrueNAS default certificate for SSL. Having a domain even with Static IP address gives you the added benefit of Trusted SSL Certificate for traffic encryption Thanks

@@LazyTourer hi. Thanks form the prompt reply. I will definitely try this. I am planning to use a tiny pc. Will i3 5 or 6th gen be sufficient or shall i go with i5? Also what is the minimum ram should i go with? 4gb or 8gb? I will be using single disk
Hello, Pardon me but it seems you have skipped the part one of the video. I would urge you to watch the part 1 of this video. The question is discussed and hands on shown in that first part of this video. Thanks.
However using a usb drive for boot drive is a dumb case that to for 24x7 server need as the usb drive will be running the operating system it will eventually heat up alot and after a short period of time it will burn up the inside smd components and result in loss of the operating system and all the configuration you are going to make un on.
Hi, Pardon me but it's not as straight forward as you are putting in. I agree with you and I have mentioned in the video itself. For enterprise environment, TrueNAS allows mirror raid creation at the time of installation itself on install / boot pool. With TrueNAS, in an enterprise environment, there will be a really high amount of I/O pressure on the drive and normal cheap USB may fail soon. But when you consider the home lab environment, for a home server, there are practically no writes for 99% of the time. Good, high speed USB drives lasts. Now there is always that chance of failure. But with TrueNAS, it takes a single click to backup your OS / Config & another single click to restore everything on a new fresh installation. So for a home lab server, if someone is purchasing a good high speed USB & taking config backup, then it is not a major issue. Thanks
Hi, If you may notice, we have shown this in the video that the drive in which TrueNAS is installed can't be used for anything else. You need seperate drive for your data as otherwise, you may install TrueNAS in an USB to use your system 128GB internal drive for data storage As otherwise, yes TrueNAS will work with i3 / 8GB RAM Thanks
I bought a Dell R730 XD, and I'm running a video editing agency with a team of 20 video editors and over 100 videographers. I'm planning to set up this system, so my question is: is it possible for my videographers to upload data to my local server? They typically upload projects that are between 100 to 300 GB to a drive and then share them with me. Can they upload directly to my server, allowing my editors to edit locally? Question 2: Do I need a firewall to protect my server from hackers?
Hello Mr. Karan, Coming to your second question first. TrueNAS as platform has it's own firewall and other security measures enabled by default. On top, Nextcloud will also have its own security protocols running along with HTTPS (SSL encryption). Unless you lose (leak) your admin user id / password, this setup is pretty secured and harden by default. Secondly, we have shown this setup process with CloudFlare tunnel for external access. CloudFlare Tunnel is free only for low usage home users. You will end up receiving ban with such high usage with CloudFlare. So for external Internet access, you may need either a VPN/VPN routing or a static public ip from your ISP. Lastly, you may also need some serious high speed Internet connection and a lot of RAM to handle 100 concurrent and simultaneous active connection. Further, it would be wise to add some high speed SSD cache to your storage pools to handle so many simultaneous users. As for the software, these are highly scalable software, with powerful hardware it can flawlessly handle such high usage. Thanks.

Hello Mr. Karan, If you may please read the previous reply, I have already highlighted that the Operating System, TrueNAS Scale comes with its own firewall and it is turned ON and configured by default. Please note, job of a filewall is really simple. Allow or Deny outgoing or incoming connections via Port Number of your Network. But apart from a firewall, security depends on many other things also. That too I have highlighted in my previous reply. So do you need a firewall? Yes definitely. What process you need to do? Well, it is already pre-configured within TrueNAS Scale. Thanks.
@@FlickereditKaran You might need 40 GbE SFP+ or ethernet port which is 5-10 times expensive than 10 GbE equipment in your TrueNas probably setting up on JBOD for so many concurrent users and whole office setup with a switch that can handle that load probably 10 GbE to each user. But it's possible with true NAS . Such complexity can only be handled with very detailed research and considering the network equipment you need , it might be best to get a quote from a expert or ready to spend time on researching everything to save on money. And 64 GB Ram is maxiumum support by official document is until 64 TB, more than that performance will start to degrade , if you need more storage than more RAM needed for TrueNAS ZFS architecture. And the enterprise grade networking equipment is usually imported with 50% import duty plus shipping and handling fee due to india's protectionist policy .

Hi, There are mainly 2 types of SSD.. NVMe / SATA.. App ki mohterboard par NVMe slot agar hain toh NVMe chal payega varna, nromal hard disk ki port par SATA SSD leni hain apko. Do you have NVMe slot in your motherboard? NVMe is really fast SATA is limited to 550 mbps for all SSD. Agar SATA SSD leni hain, toh EVM / Crucial BX ya fir Consistent hum personally use kar rahe hain.. Sob same hain real world speed / performance ke hisab se, app offer ke hisab se choice kalro. NVMe ki agar bat kare toh motherboard ke upok depend karti hain. What model motherboard do you have? Slot hain kya? Thanks.
Hi, DRAM sirf NVMe SSD ke upar fayda dega. Sata Interface par DRAM paise ki barbadi. SATA Interface 550mbps max ja payga Fast good quality qLC/TLC cache ya fir fast Bina cache ke vi fast flash storage speed is more than enough for SATA Interface. Kuch sata drives jarur hai market me jinki fash storage ghatiya quality hain, haa uspe speed effect karti hain Otherwise, most known brands will meet this 550mbps speed So to sum up, only NVME SSD can take advantage of DRAM Cache, there is no speed benefit on SATA SSD with DRAM cache since SATA ports themselves can't push more than 550mbps. Hello Mr. Debnath, Proxmox is a visualizer. Just like Virtual Box / VMWare or Microsoft's built in tool, Windows Hyper-V. It is used to create virtual machines with more advance features (Like high availability clusters, advance device pass through and such) over VirtualBox / VMWare or Hyper-V. Actual Home Server setups, like OS and server applications are still needs to be installed. For example, via this process as we have documented here -> ruclips.net/video/1UiyoV-ADrg/видео.htmlsi=EuP3RV-4ayziCrKB Do you think people would prefer code and commands over simple clicks of TrueNAS? Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Thank you brother for your quick reply, I know it is Truenas is better for storage, while Proxmox is a better hypervisor, but want to make a homeServer not only for storage for a good OS Hub, where i can use it remotly that why i requeted to you if possbile Please some help for proxmox, I cant do networking on proxmox. I cant acess proxmox server from other network.
Hello Mr. Debnath, In the open source world, idea is to give users (like you are me) options. It is not necessarily one is better than other. All have their pros and cons. Open Source gives us the ability to choose. Personally I use Windows Hyper-V as I prefer Windows Hyper-V setup over TrueNAS Scale. It gives me greater flexibility. There is slight resource consumption penalty with Hyper-V compared to linux native QEMU/KVM (which is available with TrueNAS or Promox) but performance penalty is somewhat negligible for our use case. I dont want to waste your time by saying when I would be able to make a video, but I am taking your feedback and I would try to come up with a video on Proxmox. At present, I have a video in pipeline. Self hosted Microsoft Office 365 alternative with platform independent browser based editor. Which can be easily implemented on any of the server setup what we have here on this channel. Thanks.
Hi, So there are two things you are asking, 1. Data Drives on a new install / 2. How to restore in a new install? We have shown in the video, at the time of pool creation, you can import an existing pool without formatting the associated drives. So data in those pools will stay intact. Secondly, once the server is ready and all apps are installed, you can backup the config file of TrueNAS Scale from settings. On a new install, you can restore the that file to make a new install with that single click. Thanks.
Hi, Short answer is NO. Pi is on ARM and TrueNAS Scale needs x86. There is no official support. Unofficially as proof of concept, you may emulate x86 on arm like vm but performance is terrible, completely unusable. Thanks
Hi, Why not.. If you notice, TrueNAS Scale is basically a highly modified version of Debian. The Default OS of your Pi4 is also based on Debian. So all these what we have done in TrueNAS Scale can be done in your default OS or Ubuntu (Pi4 supports Ubuntu ARM too). But you need to do things manually and install the ARM based packages for your installation. Here is a video where we are doing this same setup but with CLI manual installation mode. You can refer here -> ruclips.net/video/1UiyoV-ADrg/видео.htmlsi=GlftOBpSbAH-rI_2 We have used Snap and Docker / Docker Compose to deploy all the server apps, like Nextcloud, PhotoPrism, JellyFin and CloudFlare Tunnel, etc. Thanks.
Hello Mr. Biswas, As already commented by another user, you can definitely use the setup for commercial use. All the software, like TrueNAS (OS), Nextcloud, they are all free to use for commercial purpose. These applications are highly scalable and can easily handle really high amount of users or traffic. But as already stated, depending on your user count / process load / number of simultaneous task happening, you need to have much powerful server hardware to handle the load. Further, cloudflare is free to use only for personal use case. You will end up getting banned for commercial use with such high traffic. You may need their paid plan or it is better to use your own Static IP with a reverse proxy for exposing the setup out to internet. Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Thank you ji for your reply. I understand. But I have another question, what is the internet speed required for 200+ big file downloading at the same time?
Hello Mr. Biswas, Its not only about Internet speed, you may also need to consider the I/O (iops) for your storage devices. Mechanical Hard Disk has a spinning disk and reader head. It cant be at 200 location at same time to serve 200 requests. So storage needs SSD along with faster NVMe caching to serve high number of multiple user requests. Secondly, there is no limit on internet speed. The faster you can afford is better. Depends on your clients download speed. So, if user is coming with 100 mbps connection, think about the speed you need to serve 200 users together. Normally, in these use cases, either you have to sacrifice on client down speed to save money or pay to use CDN (best case) to distribute the traffic load. Thanks.
Hi, Sure.. Pi-Hole app is supported.. Further, TrueNAS allows you to create VM too, so if you wish, you may deploy VM and Pi-Hole in that.. Choice is yours.. Thanks.

Hi, Once you have set up the server and completed all the configurations, you can download the configuration backup. It's a small file containing config backup of your TrueNAS setup. In an unfortunate event of the TrueNAS OS drive crash, all you need to do is do a fresh installation, then import the existing pools and then simply restore this configuration backup by uploading the configuration backup file. Done.. Service will be restored Remember, to do a fresh backup after any time & everytime you make any changes via your TrueNAS dashboard. Since restoration will happen as per that backup file only. Thanks.
Hello, You may ignore the error and proceed. It is warning about your local traffic within TrueNAS (Nextcloud App to CloudFlare Tunnel) is not encrypted. That is fine. Unless you are in a business untrusted local LAN environment. In that case, you would need to install certificate in Nextcloud Server to encrypt traffic even within LAN Thanks.
Hi, First stop the Nextcloud application from TrueNAS application menu. Once the nextcloud application is showing stopped, click edit (right hand side menu) application. The Installation Window of Nextcloud will open again. Scroll down to find an option called Certificate and select the TrueNAS default certificate and then go down below to click install again to complete the process. Please note, once this process is complete, you need to edit your cloudflare public domain of nextcloud. Under the advance settings, find HTTPS connection configuration and turn of the option called NO TLS Verify Thanks.

Hello Mr. Chakraborty, I am curious, which smart tv platform supports plex but not jellyfin? By the way, its a persona home server so you are in full control. I have just shown my use case. You can choose to install plex instead of jellyfin. Consider this video as overview tutorial. Check the application store, there are various other server applications. Use which ever is your personal need. Remember, its your home server and you are in full control. So do what ever you feel best for your use case. Thanks.
Hello, Thanks for the reply. But Amazon Fire Stick does have official JellyFin client -> www.amazon.in/Jellyfin-for-Fire-TV/dp/B07TX7Z725 Coming to Samsung, yes, Tizen OS is a challenge and I guess, there for normal user plex would be out of the box solution. However, certain tasks on Plex is bind their plex pass paywall where as JellyFin is open source and free. But as I said, its upto individual users to find the right software for their each use case. Thanks.
Hi, What is the issue coming with CloudFlare Tunnel? And where in Nextcloud that not secure message is coming? Please elaborate for troubleshooting. Thanks.
Hi, CloudFlare Tunnel is working as Reverse Proxy and cloudflare is by default set to "https" with a CloudFlare issued SSL along with Auto Renew. Thanks.
Dear LT, Your approach is quite impressive just like you do it always. I have a quick question. I would appreciate if you could answer. IN my case, in the CPU, which I wanted to convert as a server, I already have a fully working windows 10 pro installed on a samsung 256GB SSD. And I have purchased two Hard drives and planning to make them as mirror. Question is, is there any way, I can install the True NAS on the SSD without formatting, so that I can use windows OS to access my existing window-based files? Thanks
Hello Mr. Madhu, Thanks for your comment and appreciations. Coming to your question. Yes, you can dual boot. Infact if you watch this video, you may see, in our setup, we have used a 64GB high speed USB pen drive as installation boot drive for TrueNAS. So you can install TrueNAS in an USB (given, that its fast enough) without touching your existing Windows setup or drive. However, unfortunately both OS natively cant read from each other. TrueNAS uses zfs file system and Windows 10 is on NTFS. TrueNAS wont work with NTFS and Windows wont work with zfs. One needs to create SMB (Samba) network shares in TrueNAS drives to allow Windows system to access the data via Network. Thanks.
@@LazyTourer , Thanks for your prompt response. I finally decided to install the TrueNas on the SSD dedicating this to only to TrueNas (Ubuntu). I am now having the SSD ( 500GB) as boot drive, and two 6TB as Mirror pool. Now I am getting a new question. Where should I reserve the space for apps and other default apps? Can I use the same Boot drive?
Hi, We have shown and talked about this in the video, by default, TrueNAS can't use the boot drive for anything else. To overcome this issue, we have used a good quality high speed USB Pen drive as our installation boot drive to allow us use the system SSD as storage pool. There are work around, like here -> gist.github.com/gangefors/2029e26501601a99c501599f5b100aa6 But this requires advance shell command and any mistake here may cause problem down the line. When using USB, one must ensure good quality USD and in a enterprise environment, one must avoid installation in USB. Thanks.

But now I am planning to move my application data from HDD to SSD to make it speed and better working. Please make a tutorial video about how to backup nextcloud users and data and all media and restore in the newly installed nextcloud server.
Hello Mr. Ramesh
What type of deployment did you do for Nextcloud? VM, Snap, Docker, Native or TrueNAS / UnRaid type 3rd party deployment?
Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Thank you for your reply. I did it as per your previous tutorial available in your website "Self-Hosted Home Lab Server in India with CloudFlare Tunnel for external Internet Access"
Posted on January 15, 2023 (Nextcloud snap,Docker Container,) Please help. Bcoz I'm planning to move the same installation to a upgraded CPU with SSD to be used for application installed. Thank you once again.
Hello Mr. Ramesh,
In that tutorial we have used Snap deployment method to deploy nextcloud.
In case you really wish to take the direct transfer route, here is the backup process of Snap Nextcloud -> github.com/nextcloud-snap/nextcloud-snap/wiki/How-to-backup-your-instance
You would need to mount a TrueNAS dataset as network mounting in storage structure of Ubuntu Server, then transfer the backup via over to TrueNAS. Further on database migration is more tricky, since one may need to manually edit the raw DB to modify the structure. Refer Here -> github.com/nextcloud/all-in-one/blob/main/migration.md
Thanks.
@@LazyTourer Thank you,
😞. I do not want to change my deployment environment. Since I'm not a CS man. It happened all by your easy tutorial. Okay I'll try. However you don't forget to come up with a new video/tutorial about nextcloud back-up and restore. Thanks 🙏
Hello Ramesh,
Manual transfer of Nextcloud is not a bad thing.

Hello,
Thanks for the comment and bringing up the issue.
1. Quality of the USB Drives
Thanks.

And thanks for sharing the knowledge of how we can access local network ip over the internet. Because in India all home internet stuck in double NAT so even with an advance router its impossible to access it over the internet.
I will definitely try the cloud flare tunneling.
Hello Brother,
Thanks for the comment.
No wonder my channel is not doing good.. lol..

Hello,
Thanks for your appreciation.
I learned a lot. Thank you❤❤
Thanks a lot a really much appriciated you effort.
Great video thanks for your contribution
16:22 : Could you please help me binding the MAC address to a static IP ? I have Jio Router, maybe help me to point to the correct direction
Hi,
Pardon me but ISP given routers, especially Jio routers are worthless.
Thanks.
Well done sir very detail video. Can you please make the video on remote access truenas it self. Thanks
Hi,
Could you please explain what do you mean by "TrueNAS itself"?
Are you referring to the TrueNAS Admin Panel and wish to access the admin panel from outside?
Thanks.
access truenas dashboard from out side of local network.
Hi,
Yes, definitely you can do so. Kindly refer to the video at play time 50:55
You can create another extra Sub Domain / Public Host Name at CloudFlare and for IP, use the login IP of the TrueNAS dashboard along with port 80 under http protocol.
There is also a SMB share mount and connection app within nextcloud's app store or you can also refer to their official documentation here -> docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/configuration_files/external_storage/smb.html
For your info & reference, nextcloud.occ process is responsible for scanning the user data folders and updating the file list within its database structure.
Thanks.
Make video on upgrading Hard drives on existing NAS with different storage space like 500gb 1tb 2tb different drives
Hello,
If you watch the video, we have shown stripe pool creation. During Stripe creation, we have added a single drive, but in your case, if you wish to use different size drives together, just add them all.
This will create one single pool and allow you to use combined space of all drives added to that stripe pool
But beware, there will be no redundancy in this use case. One drive failing would kill all data of the entire pool

Sir its an advice if any one done want buy domain they can use tailscale its a free vpn tunnel software and easy to configure
NICE VIDEO AND I UNDERSTAND
Sir
How much power consumption at idle and at use?
Hi,
It will completely depend on your individual hardware & load.
Every PC & it's hardware would be different so their power consumption would be different too
Then you need to consider the load factor. Idle PC vs full CPU / GPU load would be different
For this example, shown in the video with the said configuration, like GPU + 4 RAM Sticks + 3 Mechanical Drives & 1 SSD, idle consumption is around 25/30 watts
If you do the math, monthly idle cost is around Rs. 250/- with Rs. 10/- per unit electricity.
But there are those load times, it's not always idling.
One can use Smart Plugs like this -> amzn.to/41Hb37N or power meter like this -> amzn.to/4gJe8bU to accurately track the exact weekly of monthly cost
For this example, in my use case, it's around 300 to 350 monthly electricity running cost
Varies depending on summer vs winter as runs cool in winter so fans run slow etc
Thanks

Static ip he to bhi domain lena he kya agar nahi to kese hoga...
Hi,
If you have Public Static IP, then you can access each service via port forwarding. However, during installation of server apps, like Nextcloud, PhotoPrism, Jellyfin, ensure to turn on the TrueNAS default certificate for SSL.
Having a domain even with Static IP address gives you the added benefit of Trusted SSL Certificate for traffic encryption

Hello,
Pardon me but it seems you have skipped the part one of the video.
Hi,
Pardon me but it's not as straight forward as you are putting in.
Thanks
Sir, I have an old pc with i3 3rd gen, 8gb ram, 128 SSD. Will it work for setting up this server? @LazyTourer
Hi,
If you may notice, we have shown this in the video that the drive in which TrueNAS is installed can't be used for anything else.
You need seperate drive for your data as otherwise, you may install TrueNAS in an USB to use your system 128GB internal drive for data storage
As otherwise, yes TrueNAS will work with i3 / 8GB RAM

I bought a Dell R730 XD, and I'm running a video editing agency with a team of 20 video editors and over 100 videographers. I'm planning to set up this system, so my question is: is it possible for my videographers to upload data to my local server? They typically upload projects that are between 100 to 300 GB to a drive and then share them with me. Can they upload directly to my server, allowing my editors to edit locally?
Question 2: Do I need a firewall to protect my server from hackers?
Hello Mr. Karan,
Coming to your second question first.
Thanks.

Hello Mr. Karan,
If you may please read the previous reply, I have already highlighted that the Operating System, TrueNAS Scale comes with its own firewall and it is turned ON and configured by default.
DRAM sirf NVMe SSD ke upar fayda dega. Sata Interface par DRAM paise ki barbadi. SATA Interface 550mbps max ja payga
Fast good quality qLC/TLC cache ya fir fast Bina cache ke vi fast flash storage speed is more than enough for SATA Interface.
Kuch sata drives jarur hai market me jinki fash storage ghatiya quality hain, haa uspe speed effect karti hain
Otherwise, most known brands will meet this 550mbps speed
So to sum up, only NVME SSD can take advantage of DRAM Cache, there is no speed benefit on SATA SSD with DRAM cache since SATA ports themselves can't push more than 550mbps.

Hello can you make a video regarding Proxmox Home server.
Hello Mr. Debnath,
Proxmox is a visualizer.
For example, via this process as we have documented here -> ruclips.net/video/1UiyoV-ADrg/видео.htmlsi=EuP3RV-4ayziCrKB
Do you think people would prefer code and commands over simple clicks of TrueNAS?
Thanks.

I cant acess proxmox server from other network.
Hello Mr. Debnath,
In the open source world, idea is to give users (like you are me) options.

Hi,
So there are two things you are asking, 1.
Thanks.

sir mere pass raspberry pi 4 8gb ram variant hai usme ye truenas install kar sakte hai if yes pls give me the download link
Hi,
Short answer is NO. Pi is on ARM and TrueNAS Scale needs x86. There is no official support.
Unofficially as proof of concept, you may emulate x86 on arm like vm but performance is terrible, completely unusable.
Thanks
@@LazyTourer sir any other method for making raspberry 4 into NAS ?
Hi,
Why not..
You can refer here -> ruclips.net/video/1UiyoV-ADrg/видео.htmlsi=GlftOBpSbAH-rI_2
We have used Snap and Docker / Docker Compose to deploy all the server apps, like Nextcloud, PhotoPrism, JellyFin and CloudFlare Tunnel, etc.

Can I use this server as a public cloud storage for personal business? Monthly 15 tb download. At the same time 200+ traffic download
This depends on your wifi / isp
And the specs of your pc if it can handle that
Hello Mr. Biswas,
As already commented by another user, you can definitely use the setup for commercial use.
@@KaifShaikhTaufiqokay
Hello Mr. Biswas,
Its not only about Internet speed, you may also need to consider the I/O (iops) for your storage devices.
Thanks.
isme pi-hole install karsakte hay kya?
Hi,
Sure.. Pi-Hole app is supported.. Further, TrueNAS allows you to create VM too, so if you wish, you may deploy VM and Pi-Hole in that.. Choice is yours..
Thanks.

Hi,
Please check, the guide here is using TrueNAS Scale 24.04 version. There is indeed some issues with their 24.10 release and Nextcloud, so as of now, stick to TrueNAS Scale version 24.04
Check here -> www.truenas.com/software-status/ for version information about their release schedule !!

what if the truenas installed pendrive gets currupted??
Please answer this cause I have followed all ur steps and created then home server
Hi,
Once you have set up the server and completed all the configurations, you can download the configuration backup. It's a small file containing config backup of your TrueNAS setup.
In an unfortunate event of the TrueNAS OS drive crash, all you need to do is do a fresh installation, then import the existing pools and then simply restore this configuration backup by uploading the configuration backup file.
Done..
Service will be restored
Remember, to do a fresh backup after any time & everytime you make any changes via your TrueNAS dashboard. Since restoration will happen as per that backup file only.
Thanks.

Sir Nextcloud Mobile app ma HTTP Connection strictly no allow error ave cha
Hello,
You may ignore the error and proceed. It is warning about your local traffic within TrueNAS (Nextcloud App to CloudFlare Tunnel) is not encrypted.
That is fine.
Unless you are in a business untrusted local LAN environment. In that case, you would need to install certificate in Nextcloud Server to encrypt traffic even within LAN
Thanks.
@@LazyTourer how to satup this certificate install sir help me
@@LazyTourer sir help ne
Hi,
First stop the Nextcloud application from TrueNAS application menu.
Under the advance settings, find HTTPS connection configuration and turn of the option called NO TLS Verify
Thanks.

Sir can you pls install plex media server insted of jellyfin as many smart tv dont support jellyfin they support plex only
Waiting eagerly to see vedio on this topic
Hello Mr. Chakraborty,
I am curious, which smart tv platform supports plex but not jellyfin?
By the way, its a persona home server so you are in full control. I have just shown my use case. You can choose to install plex instead of jellyfin.
Consider this video as overview tutorial. Check the application store, there are various other server applications. Use which ever is your personal need. Remember, its your home server and you are in full control. So do what ever you feel best for your use case.
Thanks.
@@LazyTourer thanks for reply
Samsung smart tv and Amazon firetv stick both does not support jellyfin but support plex
Hello,
Thanks for the reply. But Amazon Fire Stick does have official JellyFin client -> www.amazon.in/Jellyfin-for-Fire-TV/dp/B07TX7Z725
Coming to Samsung, yes, Tizen OS is a challenge and I guess, there for normal user plex would be out of the box solution.
However, certain tasks on Plex is bind their plex pass paywall where as JellyFin is open source and free. But as I said, its upto individual users to find the right software for their each use case.
Thanks.

Dear LT,
Your approach is quite impressive just like you do it always.
Thanks
Hello Mr. Madhu,
Thanks for your comment and appreciations.
Thanks.
@@LazyTourer ,
Thanks for your prompt response.
Hi,
We have shown and talked about this in the video, by default, TrueNAS can't use the boot drive for anything else.
To overcome this issue, we have used a good quality high speed USB Pen drive as our installation boot drive to allow us use the system SSD as storage pool.
There are work around, like here -> gist.github.com/gangefors/2029e26501601a99c501599f5b100aa6
But this requires advance shell command and any mistake here may cause problem down the line.
When using USB, one must ensure good quality USD and in a enterprise environment, one must avoid installation in USB.
Thanks.
extremely useful thanks
