      Thank you Naomi. It's always a bit daunting to add a layer of something over a water soluble medium, but this wax works so well and makes water bead on the painting. The paint didn't budge. Really cool.

      Thank you very much, Eileen. Even if it hadn't worked out, it would have been a great experiment. I like the texture of the canvas under the painting and the wax almost makes it look like an oil painting. All in all, a fun project. I'll have to do this again!

    Thank you for this video! Just what I needed, as I had a few canvas at home but didn't want to waste my gouache without being sure it worked 😅
    Can I ask you a few questions about the wax? Won't it be sticky at all after it dries? Won't dust particles stick to it? Will it be the same in hot climate, won't it melt?
    In short, how good does it perform in the long run, will it be hard and wipeable like varnish?
    I have troubles finding a good water free varnish, as I don't like sprays.

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery  2 года назад +4

      Glad it was helpful! As long as you don't use too much water, gouache works great on canvas.
      As far as the wax is concerned, I haven't had any issues at all. I don't know how this works, but it does. It's hot and humid here in the summer and it's been just fine. I've had one of those little canvases in a plastic sleeve for a while and it's not sticking to the surface. Make sure you give it a good amount of drying time and you should be fine. Many artists use this wax for watercolor paintings too.
      Hope this helps.

    So beautiful and cute! Thank you for this :) I just bought my first set of gouache and I have canvases but I didn’t know if it would work. I loved your idea to make a slight background and a little snow but leave the canvas partially bare, it really pops. At 4:55 I really liked the initial shape of the background.

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery  Год назад +1

      Thank you. If you're new to gouache, I would recommend to start with paper as it will be easier. Once you're more familiar with how much water you need to use to make the paint flow the way you like it, you can start using a canvas. You might get frustrated if you use a canvas first especially if you use too much water. The paint will just bead up and it won't be much fun. Enjoy your new gouache set!

    How to set gauche on a canvas? Does it mold or something after a while?

  • @TyTLZacharie

    You may have already answered this but what advice would you give if we'd like to use a canvas that's already primed/gessoed? & we don't have or can't find a unprimed canvas?.

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery  2 года назад +5

      It's not impossible to use gouache with already primed canvas Just make sure you don't use too much water or it will not stick very well to the canvas. That is all, really. And seal your work afterward either with a spray or Norland wax.
      Have fun!

    I did a gouache painting on canvas and it was quite a struggle to get used to, but I got the hang of it eventually. One thing that I noticed, though, after having my finished painting in my studio is that the HEAT from the weather can ruin the gouache. The moisture in the air nearly destroyed my painting and made it quite sticky as if it deactivated the gouache. I need to desperately varnish the painting but now I’m afraid the varnish will pick it up and smear it

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery  3 года назад +4

      Yes, I agree that it take a little while to get the hang of it.
      What a bummer that your painting got dammaged with the weather! The wax that I use is very nice and won't smear the paint at all. I always wait about 24h before I apply it, just in case, and I haven't had a problem at all, as you can see at the end of the video. If you're looking for a varnish, I highly recommend this wax.

      Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Was it a spray? I would do some tests before applying again on a finished painting. I've had good results so far with the wax. But in general, whenever you're using a new varnish, make sure to test it first, just in case.

      There's no silly questions. I've never tried it, but I don't think it would dry at all. If you have some at home I would take a piece of scrap paper, paint a swatch on it, wait till dry, and then try the jelly. See what happens.
