Thank you great video. Two questions? After pruning can I put the leaves in the compost pile? I also noticed there were two trellises in the video. A wood and a metal one. Should I start with a wood one?
Yup, the leaves can be put in the compost pile or local brown bag program for composting. Usually, after a prune, they don't require a trellis immediately after, but if you don't have a trellis for them to grow up, then adding one when it starts to vine out again is a good idea. :) ~ Will
Am sure Matt is an expert in his field but i could never clip all those healthy foliage and blooms, i would leave them, the plant looked BEAUTIFUL. i have 4 of them, one from last year which i overwinter inside my dining room and 3 i bought on 5/24/24 at home Depot they are 2 pinks & a white. Wait for last year's plant to bloom. Am try to get well aquinted with their habits & care so i can enjoy them in good health & endless blooms.
Oh no ,,, save the flowers on its stem it so beautiful to look at ,,, hope my garden have a nice flowers like that and i will not cut while there s some flowers,, anyways,, thanks for sharing your video,, God bless everyone
My plant is drying n has brown leaves have kept in shade n repotted recently but no change have put Epsom salt have watered properly so what is wrong don’t know please help thank u soo much
You can lightly trim it now, though I will say that it's very common for this plant to completely shed nearly all their leaves between now and the end of January. It can look pretty distressing. They shed and then regrow going into late winter as the days start to get longer again. As long as it's actually thriving and not a sign of some problems with the environment or care, the plant will bounce back, and this is very natural. ~ Will
I purchased 3 small plants this past spring, one didn't do too well but the other two seem to be thriving. Now that it's getting cooler I would like to keep them going for next year but I'm not sure how to do this, should I pot them and keep them indoors for overwintering? I live in Central NJ which is Zone 6 and these plants are so pretty I hate to lose them. Also I'm wondering do they really get this big? If so I need to move them to a new spot when I bring them back outside!
My beautiful pink Dipladenia is just shooting up a trellis now, since I've over wintere it.... Should I just let the vines go now, or should I cut them to produce thicker foliage at the base of the plant? They are gorgeous plants... Your video is informative for pruning an older plant. Mine is just a couple years old. It bloomed all summer last year. I love them. ✌️
We usually don't. A lot of these plants have propagation restrictions that protect the breeders intellectual property. Simpler to just pay for approved cuttings/rooted cuttings.
Hi, I was given a Dipladenia in bloom last summer. It bloomed for a long time and I took it inside. Now it's producing lots of long trailers, it seems it wants to climb! I don't think I want to prune those?
Depending on where you live and how long the days are getting it could be starting to break dormancy and grow, it could also be growing/stretching looking for light because it's not getting enough. For most Dipladenia in our part of the world (SW Ontario) we're fine to prune those back again now because we still have 3 more months before the frost-free date when we move them back outside. If you didn't prune them in the fall it's a great idea to do that now. ~ Will
@@HeemansLondon Thanks so much. I live in Nova Scotia and the plant is in a South facing window. So it gets lots of light. I will prune it now, although these tentacles are actually so pretty!
If there's pest and the branches aren't vital, yes, that's one of the benefits of the heavy pruning. It's easier to remove a problem by cutting it off then battle it all winter - especially if the leaves/stems aren't going to be missed. ~ Will
It’s a preventative spray to help give some protection and control in case there are any pests that are on the plant as you bring it inside. Once inside there’s no natural predators so we like them to be clean so you don’t have a pest outbreak later. ~ Will
You can but with these they usually just fall off and don't require pinching. Most of the blooms are on a side shoot that you could clip off you'd like but they don't reset the plant quite like they do with petunias. Best to just leave them be, let them fall and count on regular watering and heavy feeding (we do 2x a week with 20-20-20) to get you lots of blossoms!
More light and fertilizer will help it not get so thin - that usually happens when it's not regularly pruned or is searching for light and grows leggy. Pruning + sun + regular fertilizing will be really helpful for your plant, I think. ~ Will
In our experience the reasons this happens is they've run out of energy or gotten too old. 3 years is still young but we find after about 5-7 years a dipladenia just doesn't have the vigour it once had. Pruning back the plant helps to give it a rest and encourages regrowing new shoots that blooms form on more readily. Also, regular fertilizing helps to keep the soil loaded with nutrients to give the plant what it needs to grow - without recharging the soil it can get depleted and cause performance to suffer or fail. Good luck!
Sorry for the delay. We usually suggest trimming at the end of the season going into the dormant winter period. This allows them to reset and then go into spring fuller and because of that break from blooming, they'll give a bigger, better show all spring/summer!
A nice balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 or a Miracle Gro water soluble feed is good. The key is frequency, I strong encourage feeding 2x a week or minimum 1x a week in the summer growing season. They're aggressive grows and need food to keep them growing strong!
It depends from the climate zone. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 9 through 11. In cooler zones, you can grow it as an annual or in a container you can move to a protected location for the winter.
It will grow back even more beautiful next spring. In this part of the world, if we don't cut them back they get too big, leggy & eventually run out of steam and aren't as showy and beautiful the next year.
Thank you so much. Very informative . Pruned mine right after watching you.
I love this guy. He knows his stuff and his expertise is so very useful.

Im in Zone 9A in South Texas. Can I plant it in the ground and if I can do I trim it back the same way?
They are listed as hardy in Zone 9-10 so that could work for you! Sorry, we're in Canada, Zone 5-6 so we have more experience with snow in winter. :P

I felt very sad when he cut it all down😞

should i trim this now just before summer (live in Tucson) and the ones i bought are very very leggy still small tho...

You killed the flowers 😱
Очень жаль, место нет на русском языке.Мало информации по деплоденьи.
