It would be great if you could make a video about where to find proper PC schematics and talk a bit about your software. I guess not everyone knows how it works :)
Ya trying to find even the right schematics like you said is sometimes a PIA. Had an old HP laptop here that failed to even post. SCapslock key would flash. Even find the right schematic for that one was difficult.
Really enjoyed this Paul, would love to see a youtube channel with lots of PC board repair. But i know how hard it is to source schematics and the sheer variety of boards/issues is endless. Still, definitely a nice change in content from the majority of the board repair communities which focus on the apple products of the world.
I was just doing some serious thinking about the smc. louis said, if you try to read the programming off it, it erases itself. It can't be that complicated to get the information, of what each and every ball does, and ranges that it operates at. Maybe I can get this programming for louis, but I don't think he has a reader for the smc, as it would be a pin surface, with contacts with a specific voltage pulsed in a certain way. Some chip that is very close to it in production service should be available so that with minor changes can be used for this. Each line is easily readable, and you can find the tolerances by voltage levels on each line. This will be worth good money in the future, because a lot of people like the macbook pro from 2012 better than the newer ones that can't be user maintained.
I remember trying to take apart a old Toshiba laptop to replace the CMOS battery for a client so Windows 7 wouldn't hang for some reason. Bloody nightmare. Then I wanted to replace my HP Celeron's laptop HDD with an SSD... good thing it was my own, had to take the case apart and whatnot. To make things worse, some of the screws were hidden under the feet near the pivot area for the screen... that was even more fun.
Have had a few of those HPs with screws under the back bumper-feet, also I see they're putting them under the other plastic/rubber bits sometimes too. This is what I hate about PCs in many cases, they try hiding screws in some obscure effort to be better looking perhaps, but I do wish they'd just go back to being more like the likes of the A1466/A1502/A1278 etc where you take off that bottom plate, and everything is right there, none of these crazy traps and engineering oddities.
hi Paul i'm having troubles to find good sources of bordview schematics for toshiba and acer products, do you have some sites? (doesn't have to be free) Thanks for your videos.
Hi Paul - nice seeing you work on machines from the other side :) Question: When using hot air on plastic components, what tricks do you have (if any) for nor burning the living snot out of the new one when installing it? More flux? ... seems to work for Rossmann ;)
No use at all. I have one here, haven't touched it in months. Working instead on a new community project to ensure we're not left in the lurch without boardviews while the other half of the world has them.
A neighbour's laptop wouldn't come on by pressing the On button with the power charger plugged in and the battery was dead but if you wait a few minutes then the charger led turns white and the laptop will power up. What could be causing this problem, the power charger or Motherboard?

Sorry if this is a noob question but did you wrap that wire in something non conductive? I know it’s only a momentary signal wire but having bare conductors with multiple possible random things to touch all over the board seems like it could cause problems. Maybe jumping voltages or grounds or even signals from one component to another?
Not really. That's one of those things that you really have to just work out on your own as everyone has different techniques and environments and equipment, so there's a massive range of values. I use 400'C iron and 420'C/110lpm hot air
@@pldaniels That makes sense. I just figured Id ask since I felt like I was burning a board last night with my new station at 410c. Thanks for the quick reply BTW.
When I looked for where the trace was going, it emerged on the other side of the PCB as just a via dot, no trace going anywhere, so it must be running internally; given that this was only a simple board, I would assume then it was likely to be 4 layers (rather than more, like the mainboard).
Hey Paul, could you expand on why you prefer MacBook repairs? What exactly is so bad about PC? Is it just the sheer amount of different companies and form factors etc? Thanks :)
Yes, that's the primary reason, the lack of return on experience-investment in to them, combine with the lower billable rates typically and the pains of trying to get most PC laptop mainboards out or even reasonable access to them. All in all, easy to spend a lot more hours on a PC laptop every single time relative to a Macbook.
Quiet kitty, me ow :-D That was a supprise, that line is biased to 3v approx, it seems they all do much the same. Now did you find a new connector or did you do a harvey (me) bodge?, solder the ribbon direct to the pcb, it won't fail i promise lol. Yes the startup controller pins are software assigned, oh joy when you can't find a diagram.
I did indeed find a replacement connector from one of the man dead PC laptop donors I have. A lot of flux (Louis would be proud) and a lot of patience. I pickled the pads with some leaded solder to give it a reasonable chance of coming off without melting. Machine is now running very nicely (and I fixed up the wifi nut)
Oh no you did the job propperly, you need to learn the power of the bodge luke boardwalker :) Nice repair though, and Louis would have been so happy :-D.
