  • Dogs don't talk, not with words like we do! So one of the ways we can speak the same language is to teach cues. How about we teach your dog to give you a cue when they have to go potty outside?
In this video, I give you THREE TIPS for bell training but I don't really get into the actual specifics on how to teach this step by step. This vid is mainly a few tips to get started!
Don't forget to give Hollywood a thumbs up. She was pretty tired of that bell by the time we were done with this one!
PS: No dogs ate poop in the making of this video, haha!

There were no instructions to this video. I thought I was going to see a dog learn how to ring a bell to go outside, not listen to someone just talking about it.

Sorry, Chris. I put it the description that it's mainly tips in this video, plus I changed the title, hopefully that helps! Hollywood was already trained on this, so one day I'll do a vid with a brand new puppy and show the process which can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks or so. Thanks for the feedback!

I taught my Chiwadoodle this trick. She'll ring the bell on command, knowing her reward is going outside. However, she hasn't used the bell to inform us she needs to go outside. She will ring it multiple times when we're taking too long to put our shoes on though.

My dog (frenchie) learned when I’m holding it to touch it. So I have her sit and I move a little away. Then I’m standing and I hold it down and say “outside” she will come and tap it. However if I leave it on the floor or the door she won’t do it. How can I get her to do it at the door? I even tried putting the treat on the bell, or using her paw saying outside. Didn’t work. I even shook it and said outside and took her outside. I know they are stubborn dogs but she’s been potting in my house (apartment) because she won’t let me know or I’m gone at work. I always let her outside before I leave and when I get home. Sometimes she will tell me by licking my face and sometimes I see her go when I’m there. I just don’t understand how to train to let me know she has to go and to wait and hold it when I can take her out.

My puppy rings the bell when I go to the door with him on his own, but he will not go to the door on his own and ring the bell to let us know he needs to go out. How do I get him to this next step??

My puppy uses the bell as a toy when it is within reach.. She understands how to use the bell but I can't leave it within reach all the time. This kind of defeats the purpose.. How do I get around this? BTW I'm talking about number ones. She's never number two'd in the house..

Well JT, I'm glad to hear we don't have #2's going on, whew! Tip: Separate potty time for "party time!" If you are going out to play, no sound of the bell and no ring a ding ding! Hope this helps!

      Thanks Christine.
Update; we stopped using the bell as we felt it was a distraction at this stage. She'll now "wee wee" on command when outside now but will still wee inside the house with absolutely NO warning. And I mean NO warning.
By us anticipating when to take her out all the time to avoid accidents it seems we may be teaching her to rely on us rather than teaching her tell us when she needs to go potty?..?
Or am I over complicating it...;-) Thx.

Hi J T, sorry this took so long to get back to you! Have you tried transitioning the bell to stay just by the door by now? How is going?

My dog knows what's potty is but doesn't really tell me when she has to go on her own. PLEASE HELP!!!

Tip: Dogs don't talk. Watch for your dogs signals that she has to "go!" Does she pace? Pant? STARE? Once you learn how she's "telling" you, then do the potty dance including the bell ringing routine! Hope this helps dog lover!

My 9 week old rings the bells just to play outside. Rings them all the time expecting treats outside. Since we've only been doing this about a week I don't want to ruin our work, but need her to know it's only for potty not to go outside to eat grass and lay down, please help

My dog did the same thing. What I did was I only gave him a treat if he went potty. First, you have to make sure that he is fully potty trained and always reward them for going. Hope this helped!

@@oliviaabraham-brito1978 how do I make sure she is fully potty trained as that's why I'm using the bells? I'm sorry this is so hard for us

Brandy Sullivan Well, you know your dog is potty trained when they haven’t had any accidents in the house for a bout a month. Then to make your life a bit easier you teach her how to use the bell. 😃
