I love Pantani's bike. I have a lugged Steel Wilier Superleggera with modern Campagnolo components. I love the retro look, but modern components make it an every day ride.
Pantani's Bianchi Mega Pro XL is one of my all time favourite bikes due in part to the colour scheme. Celeste is the greatest colour ever to grace a bike frame.
Pantani's machine is the ultimate bike porn and just the sight of it each morning would get the day off to a great start. Not mentioned was the fact that Marco was using a down tube shifter for his front chainrings due to injuries incurred when the Italian police let a car onto the course in a race near Torino that cleaned him up when he was in full flight I'm sure that Adam Hanson has said that Pantani rode 180mm cranks but I'm not sure how that would have worked with his frame size, either way the change in gearing used by the pros in the last 15 or 20 years has been one of the most significant changes in cycling. The Pantani descending tuck with the arms outstretched, chest on the saddle and backside over the rear wheels remains one of the most exciting sights in cycling and certainly far more elegant (and apparently at least as efficient and arguably less dangerous) than the tuck favoured by modern cyclists. The XR4 is by all accounts a brilliant bike but if I had one I would want it to be equipped with a 12 speed carbon Campagnolo groupset.
I bought the closest thing to Pantani's build I could get while living in Germany in '97/'98. I rode it 338 km in one day out and back to Weltenburger Kloster. Today, in my 40's, my dream build is an Infinito with a compact. Twenty years haven't been kind on the spine, so my boys will have to race it out while I enjoy the modern wonder of relaxed geometry.
I have the Bianchi replica Megapro XL and it is a great insane beautiful bike. There is nothing like IT and I love riding IT. Rip to my all time hero❤️
Single pivot was their way to lighten the groupset. Shimano stuck with dual pivot and I preferred DA brakes over Record single pivot. Carrera, an Italian bike builder built Pantani some bikes out of titanium and branded as Bianchi. Pataki rode mechanical because they didn't exist and he eschewed anything bigger than 23 on the back.
I don't think enough people point out the simple fact that Pantani's bike was lighter. And it didn't have any of the "stuff" on it. Capitalism or our commercial interests bring us to what some call the iPhone society. Where we need a new one every year... People need to take a deep breath see what they're getting into. If someone isn't a competitive racer. Especially during our supposed bike shortage, I can't see why more old frames aren't having life brought back into them. Oh yeah, it doesn't help the bike shops. I have one local shop here that has a row of Steel Vintage Bikes. He's 1 of 7 shops in the city and the only one where you can find a fully restored Pantani era. I love my vintage bikes. I also love my 2016 Bianchi. 🚲🚲🤙🏼✌🏼❤

yes, I clocked that too. Makes sense probably for trimming the front. On one of my (whisper it) small wheeled steel touring bikes, I have a 9 speed trigger shifter and a cheap thumbie for the front, more for reliability than anything else, but it shifts much more nicely than the SRAM Red mechanical on my carbon bike.
@@yonseimatt it was my understanding that it was lighter. As you say, it's easier to trim on the go. Also the ergo shifters were quite new and some of the riders weren't completely confident with them. I had 95 campagnolo record on a colnago and had no problems with the left hand ergo. I believe Armstrong had the same downtube shifter setup

I remember my first indexed road shifters- SunTour Accushift on the downtube!- with fondness, but had a looong break from road riding before brifters were really a thing. Only really got back into it about 10 years ago, missed a fascinating chunk of history in the making :-(
I love my retro stuff with a pinch of modern flair. I have a 90's allez with Chorus 11 and a Gilles Berthoud saddle. No disc brakes. Full fenders and a Spurcycle bell. Great for blending commutes to work with training rides in all weather. I didn't want to park it in front of the gym so I pivoted to commuting on a Peugeot Versailles for about a year. That gearing put hair on my chest LOL. My sweet husband (lucky me, a talented wrench) put full fenders and a rack on it for me. The spring of old steel is super comfortable and adds weight and makes a great training ride. My weekend toy (a Griffen) is light and aerodynamic so I feel stronger on it.
Good Jeremy, you are learning! Despite the industry pushing tubeless, pros still dominantly use tubulars (for now). The main reason is because of the ability to roll flat. That is especially true in tough conditions like the spring cobbled classics, and sometimes in the mountains where it is hard to get a wheel from the support car. With a tubular rolling flat for one km or two they may get a wheel one minute down from the peloton and with a tubeless or clincher that cannot roll flat that might get a wheel 3 minutes behind and never see the head of the race again... Also the rims are still lighter (though with disk specific rims the gap is decreasing).Those 100 grams per rim make a pretty big difference. I am wondering if tubeless tubulars are going to come along (though I doubt the industry will want to make that R&D investment)...
Daan Hoogland especially since he was irish. A small country with very little cycling history makes his achievements pretty special along with sean kelly. Maybe the British are jealous that an irishman won the Tour de France before they did 😂

for pros i consider sticking to tubular tyres as sensible. at those speeds that are raced in the peloton, in case of a flat it's just the safest option that is out there.
A tech note. In the close ups of Pantani's bike the left shifter is on the downtube. The old weight saving measure for the climber's bike. You should have mentioned that one Mr Powers.
Those Time pedals were the shizzle, man. When I got my pair, it felt so pro. That was 91. I loved those original Time pedals, it was what all my favorite pros used.
I have a 98 Bianchi XL EV2 Reparto Corse, which is pretty damn close to the Mega Pro. Campy drivetrain, which was originally a 10 speed Record set. Just replaced the rear derailleur with the 10 speed Veloce, due to component failure. The bike is light, responsive, and stiff, and still copes with what I can throw at it with ease.
Pantani’s bike is equipped with Campagnolo Differential Brakes. The front caliper is dual pivot for maximum power, while the back brake is a single pivot caliper which saves weight while reducing the likelihood of locking up the back wheel (the cUse of high side falls) on fast descents and in slippery conditions.
I had this 9 speed Record Ti groupset on a 1998 Litespeed Vortex, it was a fantastic groupset! Working like clockwork despite being almost 20 years old and the 20-year-old bottom bracket was original and perfectly smooth!!! I think you'll be lucky to get 2 years out of the modern BB... But I could not deal with 39x23 as small gear anymore, that's obsolete (or maybe I am ;) ...
Please get the names right, I understand they do not come naturally to everyone, but top level athletes deserve the respect of their names being pronounced properly. That’s what I liked about US/CAN commentators (example in NHL) that once player gets recognized, they will search how his name is pronounced in his native country, so they don’t butcher it in Live stream. Same I experienced watching cycling on Eurosport. Many exotic names, but commentator is trying best to get it right. Lantern Rouge is also doing great job getting foreign names right.
I have the Pantani Bianchi (not his) and rode it a couple of days ago! Had it for over 10 years and love it. Mine has Campy Nucleon wheelset and a Time carbon stem and Speedplays but otherwise pretty much the same ride. Wish they would have actually ridden both and compared....
How come the rimbrake C40s on consumer sites always have shiny metallic brake tracks, but whenever C40s are shown on a pros bike the brake track is black?
No mention of Pantani still using a downtube shifter for his front derailleur but an Ergopower shifter for his RD. That is probably the most old-school feature on his bike. And those Record brakes on Pantani's are also dual-pivot, just not direct-mount. As an old man, I'll take Pantani's bike all day long.
The last year a steel bike won the Tour was in 1994. The next year was either the last, or almost the last that Bianchi made steel bikes in their "racing department." (That's when I picked up my TSX frameset) After 1994, Tour riders started using, Aluminum, Titanium, and then Carbon, within four years.

It's all subjective but Pantani's bike is one of the two best looking bikes ever. The other is Greg Lemonds '89 winning TT Bottechia. Pantani's winning having taken on Ullrich on the Galibier in the rain is still the best days racing I've ever seen. It's just a pity we now know how he did it.

Pantani's prototype EV Bianchi and its successor the EV2 were only suited to very light riders - they would routinely fail at the top/head tube junction with heavier loads. They didn't sort this deficiency out until the EV3 in 2003.
Shortly after 1998 I had my second Bianchi, an aluminum hydro-carbon frame with carbon forks and seat stays. About 12 years ago I traded for a new Pinarello Quatro with Campy. My aluminum frame had a squarish & thick down tube and visibly quite different from Pantani's, and don't ever recall seeing it (mine) in the pro peleton. Wow...I've owned championship history over the years. Such as: Gitaine(2), Raleigh, Benotto, Basso(2), Bianchi(2) and Pinarello. One of my favorites was my Klein Quantum which I believe never appeared in the pro peleton.
Marco Pantani's Bianchi was made with scandium alloy tubing. The red Time equipe magnesium pedals he rode had special short spindles that were only available to pro riders. The bike you featured is an excellent replica otherwise.
Pantani and Roglic's team jersey and bike also have some dashes of yellow. (Although Roglic has it more on the jersey, where Pantani has it more on the bike)
Hi Jeremy, would have been worth pointing out that Pantani's bike had only one ergo shifter as a weight saving. The other shifting being done by a downtube lever. Interesting that this approach was also copied by Lance. I'd have Pantani's bike any day as it looks amazing - switching out the pedals for some modern ones would also bring it well under the UCI limit.
Incredibly good video. I am a retro from the retro days. Full, real Italian crafted bike should be loaded with Campy components. Throwing Dura-Ace on it is just wrong. But Roblich isn't Italian, so he doesn't carry the Italian tradition like Pantani. And he will never ride with the prowess like the Pirate.
I’ll take the modern bike all day long. Loved watching Pantani back in the day but there’s nothing about that bike that makes me go all misty eyed! Enjoyed the video, other than having a wheel at each end and a seat up top, the two bikes have almost nothing in common with each other!
I would go with the retro bike so I don’t have to deal with the press fit bottom bracket’s squeaking problems. I do own a De Bernardi Italian Road Bike which is a modern retro bike build with thirty speeds and it is a good bike for climbing bridges.

Also one of my favorite bikes is my 2001 Pinarello Prince, super stiff , yet compliant with carbon stays. The bike just fits well.
How come the rimbrake C40s on consumer sites always have shiny metallic brake tracks, but whenever C40s are shown on a pros bike the brake track is black?
No mention of Pantani still using a downtube shifter for his front derailleur but an Ergopower shifter for his RD. That is probably the most old-school feature on his bike. And those Record brakes on Pantani's are also dual-pivot, just not direct-mount. As an old man, I'll take Pantani's bike all day long.
It would be interesting to test bikes for their stopping distance from 40 kph. Maybe a padded landing area would be good.

The last year a steel bike won the Tour was in 1994. The next year was either the last, or almost the last that Bianchi made steel bikes in their "racing department." (That's when I picked up my TSX frameset) After 1994, Tour riders started using, Aluminum, Titanium, and then Carbon, within four years.

It's all subjective but Pantani's bike is one of the two best looking bikes ever. The other is Greg Lemonds '89 winning TT Bottechia. Pantani's winning having taken on Ullrich on the Galibier in the rain is still the best days racing I've ever seen. It's just a pity we now know how he did it.

Pantani's prototype EV Bianchi and its successor the EV2 were only suited to very light riders - they would routinely fail at the top/head tube junction with heavier loads. They didn't sort this deficiency out until the EV3 in 2003.
Shortly after 1998 I had my second Bianchi, an aluminum hydro-carbon frame with carbon forks and seat stays. About 12 years ago I traded for a new Pinarello Quatro with Campy. My aluminum frame had a squarish & thick down tube and visibly quite different from Pantani's, and don't ever recall seeing it (mine) in the pro peleton. Wow...I've owned championship history over the years. Such as: Gitaine(2), Raleigh, Benotto, Basso(2), Bianchi(2) and Pinarello. One of my favorites was my Klein Quantum which I believe never appeared in the pro peleton.

Marco Pantani's Bianchi was made with scandium alloy tubing. The red Time equipe magnesium pedals he rode had special short spindles that were only available to pro riders. The bike you featured is an excellent replica otherwise.
Forgot to mention Stephen Roche completing the Giro-TdF double in 1987!

Pantani and Roglic's team jersey and bike also have some dashes of yellow. (Although Roglic has it more on the jersey, where Pantani has it more on the bike)

Hi Jeremy, would have been worth pointing out that Pantani's bike had only one ergo shifter as a weight saving. The other shifting being done by a downtube lever. Interesting that this approach was also copied by Lance. I'd have Pantani's bike any day as it looks amazing - switching out the pedals for some modern ones would also bring it well under the UCI limit.

Incredibly good video. I am a retro from the retro days. Full, real Italian crafted bike should be loaded with Campy components. Throwing Dura-Ace on it is just wrong. But Roblich isn't Italian, so he doesn't carry the Italian tradition like Pantani. And he will never ride with the prowess like the Pirate.

I’ll take the modern bike all day long. Loved watching Pantani back in the day but there’s nothing about that bike that makes me go all misty eyed! Enjoyed the video, other than having a wheel at each end and a seat up top, the two bikes have almost nothing in common with each other!

I would go with the retro bike so I don’t have to deal with the press fit bottom bracket’s squeaking problems. I do own a De Bernardi Italian Road Bike which is a modern retro bike build with thirty speeds and it is a good bike for climbing bridges.
Pantani was and is legend.
