Chicago has been plagued by cycles of drugs, gangs, and violence - each contributing to the staggering 305 murders in 2018, which placed the city with one of the highest homicide rates in the country.
In an environment where seeking help carries a stigma, young men of Chicago have been carrying years of unimaginable trauma and potentially continuing the same dangerous cycles. Until now.
Meet the leaders of Becoming A Man, who are revolutionizing support for these young men by moving the conversation inside school walls to provide the space individuals need for positive transformation.

This is a great idea and hopefully it spreads. One child lost is too many and positive role models are hard to come by sometimes. This is our future.

And most importantly, their families must do the same thing as Youth Guidance did to their children at home.

This video didn't explain what the program actually does. What exactly do you teach? This was all about pep talks and promotion but you didnt actually say what you teach. "I learn to be less angry" But how? "We teach them to become a man", meaning what? Without these specifics, you could literally be teaching them anything and the public wouldn't know.

BAM fosters positive development in young men by emphasizing Six Core Values:
Integrity: My values equal my actions. I am a man of my word.
Accountability: I am responsible for the consequences of my actions whether intended or unintended. I take ownership for what I do and avoid projecting blame.
Positive Anger-Expression: I learn that anger is a normal emotion that needs to be expressed. How I express my anger is a choice, whether as a savage or as a warrior.
Self-Determination: I pursue my goals in the face of adversity. I learn to conquer self-defeating thoughts and overcome obstacles.
Respect for Womanhood: I learn how my words and actions devalue women, including those I love. I am more mindful and respectful in how I interact with women. I strive to be a self-liberator and not an oppressor.
Visionary Goal-Setting: I create a vision for myself, for who I am, and how I want to be seen in the world. I create a vision that is focused on making my community and the world a better place. I set goals based on my vision and make responsible choices that help me achieve those goals.

“We get to talk about what we really feel. We get to talk
about what’s bothering us. In school, we don’t get the
chance to do that. We either bottle it up like I’ve always
done, or we lash it out on other people and get in trouble
for it. In BAM, you get to talk about it and not get in trouble.
You get to talk about it and get help. “

@@YouthGuidanceHQ chicago has the highest crime rate in the country and is rising every year. To claim you are a success is not objectively true. You may be making a difference on a subjective basis for some people. Teaching men to use their anger in healthy ways is great. However, you are purposely leaving out the details and i know why. You acknowledge to these men that they are victims of the system and then teach them to deal with it. The problem is that they are not victims. You are acting as if helping them with this "problem" of dealing with being held down is a good thing when in reality you should be teaching them that they are not held down by anything. Race is irrelevant in this society except to those who think themselves better because of it. Your "guidance" only furthers the divide between races and is short sighted. Teaching that we have the same opportunities if we work hard has better results than teaching that if we fail it is because of someone holding us back and we need to learn to deal with it. You need to teach us personal responsibility and to stay in our kids lives. Long term solutions.

@@jakel7820 Chicago not even close to the highest crime rate...just because it has the most amount of crime don’t mean it’s the highest crime rate...Chicago have over 3.5 million people in the city so of course the numbers are going to be high,,not only that but Chicago the only trauma unit in the cook county..so that’s also why a lot of people die from their injuries not enough surgical help to survive and recover..(But that’s neither there or there I just thought I add that) Chicago murder rate is less than 20 per 100k...I live in new Haven ct and our murder rate is higher than that..ours is 25 per 100k and we only have a population of 130k...if My city was as big as Chicago we’ll have a murder rate of 875...that’s how it works..per 100k...and the areas where it’s violent hold the majority of the population..but it’s not the highest crime rate
