NZ have really good teachers and they can deliver good results. They just need to be given the autonomy from the wishy washy Ministry of Education and the shitty education ministers of all the political parties (who are not educators) who think they understand education. POLITICIANS don't even send their kids to state schools, that's one of the problems.

State schools are teaching children to be complaint.
Their not teaching children how to succeed in life to be independent to be sovereign. They are propaganda machines. Politicians kids are being taught how to be lead others. Their being taught entitlement is ok. Their being taught, some of them...... how to manipulate.

Agree with that 199%. They have nice life styles, their payed well, they have nice homes, nice cars, nice friends, nice holidays.
Their payed not to see, they are part of the establishment.
And their as gullible as the next idiot. They will be the last idiots to see what's happening.
Many of us further down the food chain can see clearly now whats happening.
Their going to try it on with the on line security nonsense this year is my guess, maybe very shortly. Say no. That's going to be a biggy for their plans going forward. As many of us as possible just have to say no.

I absolutely know there are fantastic teachers out there BUT there are more bad/complacent/activist ones unfortunately. My kids school is more interested in weaving te reo Maori and Maori spiritual practice into all areas of the curriculum then they are about lifting the reading and maths achievement of every student. They would rather appease or push an ideological viewpoint then teach our kids the core knowledge they need to get ahead, to gain knowledge, and get the building blocks for future learning in place. It's really really bad. People need to go and actually understand the curriculum and priorities of your kids schools- you will be SHOCKED.

When you dumb down earlier education to become a participation prize rather than investing in bringing up the level of kids who struggle this is the outcome, even the brighter kids miss out on learning at the level they need to be at to perform in high school, let alone university.

NCEA does not work for students not teachers. Teaching needs to be structured and consistent. NCEA burdens the teacher too much to create teaching resources. It is inefficient and in-effective driven by social ideology. Just bring back Bursary. It worked.

What world are you preparing your kids for ? The Google Classroom model has failed in USA so why are we using it ? Screen time is proven to be the worst way to educate. Look at the countries that manually read and write ? Who are the top countries in Education mostly Asian who focus on calligraphy and use REAL BOOKS. Top maths .. countries still teach with a traditional method. If Teachers embrace online learning in the classroom why do we need Teachers ? Honesty is required . Some kids will never pass maths etc. and need to be directed into skills that they can do. This govt are just increasing the pressure but not actually introducing anything pragmatic ..

Yes, as a new high school teacher I agree, the evidence SHOWS that students remember less of what they learn if they don't write it down by hand (aka writing notes on laptops is not so helpful) and the computers help them with spelling, structure, and maths stuff ....so their brains only need to be 50% switched on. Plus most don't read or do practical things in their free time as they just scroll and watch others do things. Lots of things that need to be both supported and pushed against.

But really what are these so called high stakes?
Once you turn 20 you can apply to universities if that's your thing.
But where is it all leading to?
One major reason literacy and numeracy standards are so low is because of the emphasis of using technology, in other words you don't need to figure it out or produce it yourself, the computer will do it for you... and then replace you in the workforce
So again, where's it all leading to?
How about bringing retired adults in who have already learnt literacy and numeracy over a lifetime and use them under the limited authority to teach plan which is overseen by qualified teachers?
This would reduce student/teacher ratios in classrooms and in-still some perspective on life and work for younger people.
    Just thoughts...

What if university isn't your thing? Just about every decent job these days needs at least NCEA 1, often NCEA 2. This is a disservice to our young people, and technology is not the cause. The cause is short-sighted changes to the curriculum which leave students less prepared for their externals. Also, how do you intend to pay those retired people, and are they going to do a PGCert in Teaching and Learning first? Who is going to pay for that? The actual solution is properly funding the education system, and listening to the actual experts when it comes to curricula, neither of which the govt is doing.

@trevorstewart8 this one. They changed the curriculum to prioritise "basic skills" without consulting with experts in education and pedagogy, all of whom said it was a bad idea. And now, here we are, students are flunking out of their NCEAs.
This current govt said from the start, "we will not be taking expert advice as ministers". This is one of the many consequences of that

Anyone who just finished NCEA Level 1 were the first wave of lockdown kids. My child just completed level 3, she gave up maths and science because she just couldn't grasp the basics while trying to learn from home in years 7, 8 and 9. She has been assessed as a very intelligent person and is aaperger with adhd but I just couldn't help while we were locked at home. I fail to see how parents trying to work from home could also supervise children trying to grasp the fundamentals.

Is this the outcomes Luxon keeps talking about?

    • @ataxpayer723
      @ataxpayer723 14 дней назад +3

No, but it is the result of the Govts experiment called Tomorrows Schools:
      Tomorrow’s Schools
The 1988 ‘Picot Report’, Administering for excellence: effective administration in education, described the Department of Education as ‘inefficient and unresponsive’ and a case of ‘good people, bad system’. The government, in which Prime Minister David Lange was also minister of education, accepted many of Picot’s recommendations. In 1989 the resulting Tomorrow’s Schools programme became the basis for reforming primary and secondary education in New Zealand. A leaner Ministry of Education replaced the Department, and the regional Education Boards were abolished. New agencies included an Education Review Office to monitor schools and a New Zealand Qualifications Authority to oversee student assessment. In line with ‘new-right’ theories of consumer choice, the elected boards of trustees which now managed schools were required to write their own charters. Many parents and teachers resisted these sweeping changes, with some success - attempts to introduce the bulk-funding of schools ultimately failed.

Where is the concern for those students who failed the two new standards? Bringing in new workbooks is great for those in Years 0 to 8, but what are they offering the students who are now in high school? What is the plan for extra support and funding for them, which includes the ones who failed to pass the new material last year. As for parents helping, I finished high school in 1980. I still struggle with the basics in mathematics, still count on my fingers at times or use a calculator, and don't even try more complex calculations. I couldn't help my children in the 2000s or my grandson today because in my day maths was taught from a textbook and if you didn't get it the first time you were left behind when the class moved on.
