I've been trying to help a child with autism learn to ride a bike for several years now. We copied your method in this video and he was riding without training wheels within 2 hours. Amazing! You and your son did a great job putting this video together. Thank you!
My grandson is 6 and a very timid child. He was very resistant to learning. We showed him the video and his sister got him to do the steps. He was riding in about 20 min! Once he was on the bike he didn't want to get off! Thank you for this easy technique! We didn't remove the pedals but did lower, then raise the seat. Awesome! ❤️
After many months of resistance and fear I showed my 8 year old the video and the comments and he agreed to give it ago. Over two short sessions he asked for his pedals back on and away he went! Thank you so much
By using the method taught in this video, i was able to teach my 8-year-old son to ride a 2-wheel bike in 3 days! This really boosted his confidence and he’s such a happy boy now! Thank you Dr!
Our 11 yr old (adopted) daughter has never been taught to ride. I saw this video yesterday and she’s already riding today!! So amazing!! This works wonderfully!
I can’t thank you enough for this video. I was struggling with my 6 year old. We saw this and tried it, only took a few hours and she is riding her bike like a pro now.
Hi Greg-This is so wonderful to hear! I’m glad the method worked so well for you guys. Here’s to your daughter and a lifetime of adventure on her bike!
You have my eternal gratitude for sharing this truly easy, painless (and very logical) way. 3 sessions, and we were set. Thanks a million to the good doctor.
This should be the only way to teach a child to ride. My kids 9 and 13 were afraid to ride because I tried teaching them how I learned. Too many falls, a lot of frustration and they wanted nothing to do with it. I showed them this video and off we went. Literally less than thirty minutes later they were both riding a bike like they had been doing it all their life. It was amazing and so simple and I can't believe I never heard of this method. Bought three new bikes and the whole family has been riding everyday since. Thanks so much.
@@jackieshaw1967 you'll get there I'd reccomend you have someone helping you like holding you while you ride straighten your back put equal weight/pressure on the bike then dont fear to fall after that let the person/parent take their hands off you then try to ride foward without moving/unbalancing and if that does happen just try turning your direction to which way your unbalanced and just try to ride.
Thanks for this! I'm an older teen but I never learned because of an ankle and calf muscle issue I had as a kid. During the Quarantine, I thought it'd be cool to learn in my driveway- to be outside and still social distance!
Have watched many videos. But this method is so effective. My daughter is 6, it's been more than 2 years she touched a bike, that too with training wheels. Bought a new one and followed the exact way. On day one, It jus took 45 mins she started riding at least 3 metres on her own. Thanks a lot. Hats off.
Thank you Dr Steve. I tried your method with my 6 year old grandson. I tried teaching him on a 20 inch bike but he could not reach the ground while on the seat. So we tried a 16 inch bike. He had the balancing part figured out in about 3 hours. I put the pedals back on and he was riding around pretty good. He only needs to work on starting from a dead stop. Thanks again. PS. RUclips is awsome.
That's great! I'm glad this helped. Starting from a dead stop is tough. The best way to do it when first starting out is to have him do one strong bunny hop, then start pedaling once the bike is moving. Trying to pedal from a dead stop is tough for young kids because many don't yet have the strength to have that first pedal push them with enough force to keep them steady. Best of luck to your grandson!
This was so helpful! My daughter has tried for years and we followed your tips and within an hour she had pedals back on and riding! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I followed this technique. I was skeptical in the beginning but it really worked. We removed the paddles too for few days and later on installed the paddles again. In few days which was less than 10 days he was able to ride bicycle on his own. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! we had my 8yr old daughter gliding and bunny hopping for a week, today we put the pedals back on the bike and she instantly went to riding by herself! Day 1 of gliding was full of tears, every day we had tears from something...but today was just tears of joy 🤩 your method is very much appreciated, thank you! God bless 🙏
Thank you! We followed your method and my 7 year old watched this too. We took it slow over a few half hour sessions and today he rode for the first time by himself. Amazing!🎉
I didn't learn until I was 19 and only a little then in my 30s finally rode a bike 🤦🏻♀️ my parents never got me a bike we lived in an apartment in NYC so sad now we have a 6 year old to teach so this is super helpful. My husband knows how to do everything but he has no patience so it's up to me and I had no idea how to teach him. Thanks!!!
Grate video. I have a few comment thou. My granson started on a balance bike and mastered it at the age of 2 yrs. Next to no instruction, he figured it out by himself, steering and countersteering, keeping the balance etc. After some weeks he advanced to a Woom-2 bike with pedals, freewheel, two brakes a high steering bar and a low seat. You sit low with good oversight. We put a lot of time into training at slow speed, braking to a stop. Step off at the side you want to, that is full control of your lean direction as the bike coms to full stop. Sharp U-turns at low speed. All of this for him to learn not only to ride in a straight line, but to have full control of the bike. This training started the moment he was ready for it. In short; no support wheels, no pedals (take them off), low seat, start with duck walking and off you go. Works for toddlers and for adults, never too late.
Thank you very much for the steps shared in this video Dr. Steve. I used them with my daughter today and she was riding within 30 minutes. The bunny hops were especially useful.
I cant wait to try this technique with my son! He is 9 and we tried the way I was taught (wrong!) which made him crash. That made him leary but I know this will be something he will try. I hope to post an update soon. Great idea. Ty
@@aboomalacani5829 so how did u know he was ready to put the pedals on then. My son's already discouraged so im nervous about having him try this new way.i dont want him to get his hopes up 😪
Sam nic, I knew it was time to put the pedals back on when he asked me to! This is pretty close to how we got to that point: He had been tip-toeimg around (propelling himself) on a flat paved section of road that I located which had little to no traffic. He would occasionally lift his feet up a little as he went along. I counted out loud how long his feet were up each time which gave him confidence in balancing himself. That is when he asked for the pedals. Once i put the pedals back on, he lifted his feet up and the ability to balance he had developed while tip-toeing, allowed him time to get his feet on the pedals. After he mastered getting his feet on the pedals, he gradually began to pedal full revolutions. That process went something like him going from pedaling a 1/4 turn on the first effort to a half turn on the second effort before putting his toes down because he would lose his balance. It went on like that for numerous efforts but the pedal strokes gradually became longer. It is a moment of "greatness" for sure when those become full pedal strokes and are back-to-back. Next thing you know, you hear "I'm doing it!" :) I encouraged my son throughout the entire process, reminding him that these "steps" would add up and altogether equal him riding all by himself. Going further, I told him that it is "normal" for this to take time and be a challenge but it would be worth it. Breaking the steps down into 10-15 min sessions also kept my son from getting too impatient, tired and discouraged. I hope this helps.
I had followed the exact steps ( except the last glide and raising the seat) before watching this video and she started riding in 15 minutes. No kidding. This method works,
I’m starting this today. I can’t do the “run along side” without throwing off my sons balance so, let’s see how this goes. I’ll be back with an update! Today is 4/14/20.
I can't wait to try this out with my granddaughter she is nine years old and has always had training wheels she's been struggling so I hope this works🤞🏻
Thank you for this video. It helped teach my daughter to ride in an hour or less. She had been a scooter kid, mainly out of fear of riding a bike without training wheels. Very proud.
Hi my 6yr is the size of an 8 almost 9 year old so I don’t know what to do. He’s never rode before and I had to get him a 20’ bike with no training wheels because the 16’ was really small for him and that’s the last size with training wheels and front brake handles. I bought a separate pair of training wheels but they’re too dang short. Please advise. I really hope someone offers a solution. Do I keep the bigger wheel bike or get the smaller one? Thank you
First off ,you have to get them on the right size bike start off with a balance bike then work your wake up to a bigger bike my son learn how to ride a pedal bike after one year on a balance bike and he's 4 you don't want to take a chain off a bike and pedals to where he's going to take corners and was cranks are going to hit the ground and he's going to fall and get hurt?
My 2 year old is successfully riding very well with training wheels but is too small to reach the ground with the seat lowered should i just wait until she grows a bit.
My son is 8. 3 years ago he was eager to learn. We made the mistake of having practice in the middle of a open field where lots of kids play. He crashed in front of lots of people and it left an impact on him. Now he’s so embarrassed he doesn’t want to learn
My son is about to turn 12 and is autistic. I've tried to teach him how to ride a bike a few times over the years but I've never succeeded. Do you think this is a good way for him to learn?
Hi Shannon-I think this is definitely a good way to try. There are comments below from other families whose children have learned with this approach in the face of various physical and developmental challenges. It’s certainly worth a try. Best of luck!
Yup, those are awesome (and I have links to them in the article linked in the video description). This is one way to turn a regular bike into a balance bike in case you already had a regular bike. Happy riding!
I can only partly ride a bike w out training wheels.. I tried one training wheel you want to push more weight on the part with the training wheel side :p
You might find that using this method with the training wheels off entirely is more helpful. Keeping the training wheels on, even just one, acts like a crutch that keeps you from learning the best way to balance. Give it a try--I know you'll get there!
Im25 and now that I got my daughter her triciycle I really wish I could bike with her someday so hopefully I get me a bike soon and start practicing lol
great job buddy! :) i actually wanted to get to know the details, because this is really good. In fact i understand why the running cycles are so in trend hahaa! :D But the link to the website does not work anymore :(
If it wasn’t for my parents I wouldn’t know how to ride a bike my grandma helped me and I learned how to ride without training wheels 6 or 7 yrs old and now I’m 10 really good at riding a bike
Yes, yes, yes!!! We were unable to remove the pedals...but that didn't stop the 9 year old, 1 hour and the 7 year old, 2 hours, to successfully learn to ride their new bikes without training wheels!!
How can you and your kid ride a bike like that? for some reason I can't get it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can you please try to ride a mongoose bike without training wheels because I have that bike and I can't ride bikes without training wheels don't tell anybody that I can't ride a bike without training. wheels thank you 👲👤👤👤🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Im actually 9 years old and i dont know how to ride a bike.... My brother even knows how to ride a bike already i was jealous.. So i went outside and tried to bike but i couldnt even move because there was no training wheels so my brother's friends laughed because i dont even know how to ride a bike i was devastated and embarrassed i was so sad i startes to cry and went in my house I mean... Great shirt on your son!! Two weeks ago, we got our daughters their first bikes. My nearly 4 year old has training wheels, and my nearly 2 year olds' bike converts to a balance bike. So doing some research, I decided to remove the training wheels and pedals, and she loves it. She's trotting with the bike, trying to glide and is just enjoying it. 👍👍

Hi Shannon-I think this is definitely a good way to try. There are comments below from other families whose children have learned with this approach in the face of various physical and developmental challenges. It’s certainly worth a try. Best of luck!
How'd it go? Hoping it all worked out for your son and you💖
This is a very nice step
They have bikes like that the gt shuffle or the strider bike that's how my kid learned
Yup, those are awesome (and I have links to them in the article linked in the video description). This is one way to turn a regular bike into a balance bike in case you already had a regular bike. Happy riding!
This was a great video
Anyone can learn how to ride a bike instantly with this😁
Well my bla lance is good not perfect I’m just scared but the hardest part for me is starting to go i keep missing the peddle on the lower peddle
Thank you I feel confident that I can teach her
Thank you Dr. Very helpful and I feel much better about helping my son make the transition to no Training Wheels!
Great! I’m so glad this has helped! All the best!
If you want to learn how to ride a bike watch RAD! That's the most logical way. LOL! I watched that over and over when I was a kid.
I am going to learn this a lot!
I can't learn to ride bike hehe. Sad for me....nice video
I'm 22 year old man and I keep falling off my bike
Its fear. Mental. I keep being scared to put my foot up
@ shut up
Rahat Hasan You'll get it soon i can't ride a bike either im 13

Yes my daughter also ride a bike without spotters
a bunny hop is when you get both tires of the ground
And hop
Exactly! 😂😂😂
parker Nelson ...hilarious, thats what i remember too
In biking terms yes. This is for beginners though. But ask a kid to bunny hop and they will do it with their feet.
From Europe and i agree on that one 👍

Excellent! I’m so glad, Oscar! I hope you guys have a blast!
What if a person's balance is the fault for their inability to ride without training wheels?
Yes, yes, yes!!! We were unable to remove the pedals...but that didn't stop the 9 year old, 1 hour and the 7 year old, 2 hours, to successfully learn to ride their new bikes without training wheels!!
Did u loosen the chain?

Im actually 9 years old and i dont know how to ride a bike.... My brother even knows how to ride a bike already i was jealous.. So i went outside and tried to bike but i couldnt even move because there was no training wheels so my brother's friends laughed because i dont even know how to ride a bike i was devastated and embarrassed i was so sad i startes to cry and went in my house

Great! Now where's the video of how to take off the pedals and loosen a dang chain?
So A strider?
Thanks
Im still dont know how to ride a bike cuz i can keep banlce and im not used to it :(
Great shirt on your son!! 👍👍
That’s wonderful, Miya! I’m glad she’s having fun! (And go Nats!)
