I put up a 123ft doublet 4 years ago and have never looked back. If you use steel reinforced antenna wire, one continuous length for each top section and each side of the ladder line feeder, and bring it indoors through two 1cm holes drilled in your house wall you end up with an indestructable antenna. No external joins, no traps or baluns to fail, and no earth wires to mess up your garden. Put one up and forget about it. It covers every band from 80m to 6m, and even tunes up on 160m for local Eu work.
This summer I tried vertical. Fan vertical for 20 and 40. Worked like a dream. Now Im back to doublet. Outside the shack I go from ladder to double coax through the wall, then a balun and my tuner.
Glad you got sorted Tim 👍🏻 Like you say, it just goes to show what you can shoe-horn onto a normal sized garden for the lower bands. The length and height may look short & low, but if people try, they’ll be surprised what can be achieved 😀
For all the run of RG58 you have it will not make a huge difference, only if you go above 10 meters will you notice a lot of loss. Anyway, it was to test something and with the RG58 you proved it. What is there to loose. Oh I got it, it is what is left from your CB days! :-))
Great stuff Tim. Don't want to run ladderline inside myself so will likely go with the 4:1 balun and about 5/6ft of RG213 to the tuner. Given the choice I would always have a antenna like this for "local" if I could only have one permanent antennas is the case here. 73, Colin.
interesting as ever ! good to see you getting out on 80m after the work to get the antenna in place. where about does the majority of the signal radiate from in your configuration ?
Don't be wasting your time with obs. Use that one I told you about. We can do a call on messenger if you'd like to talk me through it. 73...BTW the rear leg of my doublet is bent to fit also. Mines a monster at 204 foot, open wore all the way to the shack
Good work Tim, glad you are getting some contacts on 80m again. I wonder....did you ever try a 4:1 current balun at the end of the ladder line then coax straight to the radio's internal tuner ? Just curious...73, Syd
Just some positive critics/question. Hope you don't mind :D It might be cool to actually 'see' the antenna in videos like this. Picture or even a panning video. For the visualizing persons that might help understand it a bit more (at least, I would :)) All the best and keep up the good work! 73 de PC4AD
This should encourage a lot of folk with small gardens, amazing what can be achieved.

Great example 👍👍
Thanks Tim, interesting as usual 👍
I can testify that your doublet works well. 5x9+ on two bands to my station which is also using a zig-zaggy doublet! 73, Tom.
Great to see the work Tim. Both enjoyable, and educational!
Cheers Matt!

Thanks for the call on 80m last Saturday! Working well Tim.

Yes you sounded very strong Nick I
Forgot to mention it on our qso today but many thanks for the work you put into your youtube channel 73s Tony SV0SRS
My pleasure Tony it was super to work you 👍👍

Good to hear it is performing well.
Cheers John 73

I'm famous My call sign was on your PC.... Yes.. good video mate.
Oh Mike! Really, you are famous on your own channel :-))
Like to see a video of the antenna in the garden. Keep up the good work best 73
No problem .. one of the links that popped up in the video should take you to that 73
Nice job mate 👍
Got me thinking now Tim on a new antenna for the spring time. 73
Pleased it was a success.....eventually. Your description of the element routing left me completely confused. Speak soon 73
Could you provide a sketch of the routing of the antenna? Would be useful as your description left me (and others) a bit baffled!

Great minds Syd! I’ll be trying out something similar using both 1:1 and 4:1 as it’s pretty close size wise to a ZS6BKW 👍👍 73

Tim, what logging software is that?

Thanks Anton. I did include a link to this on the video itself but your point is taken 👍 73
