      This was actually really helpful when I was dancing because sometimes my friends said things in different ways then my teacher and makes it easier to understand when you're little. When everybody has a solo and you take turns dancing in front of each other it's actually pretty constructive.

So we all hated it of course but nobody felt like they were specifically singled out or that it was personal. It actually ended up being pretty productive most of the time. Abby just did this to make Chloe feel bad. And it clearly made the others feel bad too, nobody felt good about this except Abby

    i am a dancer myself and i'm constantly get critiques from my coaches and even my dance friends.
    in my leaps and turns class, every time we do a combination, one part of the class has to do the combination together while the other has to critique and point out anything that they think isn't correct. then we switch.
    i really don't agree with christie when she said they teach their daughters not to be 'judgemental.'
    they aren't being judge mental. it's giving constructive criticism to another dancer, don't take it personally, they are trying to hurt chloe, they're helping chloe.
    there's a difference between judging someone harshly and giving someone constructive criticism.

      Maddie was only 9 here so she probably doesn't have the command of English that the other girls have. I could understand what she was getting at and I don't think it was mean. What she was trying to say was that when CHloe is not doing some sort of trick or turn then she is a little bit sloppy.

      And Paige made a remark about Chloe fixing her feet. Was that rude? Not at all.
      All of them made valid corrections. Nobody told Chloe that she was bad or that she didn’t do well. They all just gave little corrections on what they felt needed fixing.
      Paige thought that her feet needed fixing.
      Nia thought that her eye contact needed fixing.

    I think what Maddie meant was that her transitions into other moves weren't clear and/or cut short which makes it look "messy". It's always good to have a clean and clear transition, to show off lines and technique, otherwise it's like "what? how'd you get to that?" And then points will be taken off. Yes it's uncomfortable for the girl's to judge their friend, but a lot of dance teachers do that. It's not to make the one kid dancing feel insecure, it's so everyone can learn and see how the body works with dance and what they need to do to show off their lines and flexibility with the proper technique and so in the future they don't hurt themselves by not applying those corrections whether it be from the dance teacher or their peers.

    • @corimoon3360
      @corimoon3360 2 года назад +2

      If that’s the case then why did she ONLY do it to Chloe??? Why didn’t she want them to also tell her the good things about her dancing??? She wanted them to make her feel bad, end of story. Stop making excuses for her. Also Maddie isn’t qualified to be making those judgments when her transitions are also messy. None of the girls are really qualified enough to “judge” so idk why you’re justifying Maddie’s critique but not the others.

    • @pric4799
      @pric4799 2 года назад

      @@corimoon3360 Maddie only did it to Chloé under Abby’s instruction, just like all the other girls. You don’t have to be perfect at something to critique it. Even non-dancers critiqued Maddie when she fell out of her turns in Be Anything.
      The reason people are justifying Maddie the most is because Maddie is the one getting the most hate for her comment, even though:
      - it was not her fault, the girls were all pressured to by Abby
      - she wasn’t the only one who gave a critique, they all did, but Maddie is the only one getting ‘called out’
      - she was just as uncomfortable as many of the other girls, her voice was shaky, she played with her hands, bounced her knees, etc
      - And she was one of the youngest, so she struggled more than the other girls to put her thoughts into words, especially in an uncomfortable situation.

    I love Chloe but in this situation I think she needs to toughen up a bit. It is completely normal for friends at studios to give each other constructive feedback, we do it lots at my studio and never in a mean way just in a helpful way. Christi overreacted judging and giving helpful feedback are two very different things.

      I was meaning in relation to her reaction when nia gave her a critique - in a very friendly and non critical way. You could clearly see Chloe seemed very hurt by her face and body language, and personally I don't think it was necessary here as no one said anything rude or mean to her. Like I said, happens lots at our studio and it is never in a mean way, exactly the same as you see here. The girls were simply giving some helpful feedback.

      Chloe looked upset/distressed before they even started giving critiques because she was probably nervous. She wasn’t over reacting or doing anything wrong. • @amazinggraciegurl

    Lots of people aren't getting it. The problem isn't in Chloe being critiqued. The problem is in Chloe being the ONLY one who's critiqued. Critiquing in itself isn't harmful. What's harmful is being singled out like this. It's especially hurtful to a child. Either every child should be critiqued, or no child should be critiqued.

    Overall, when it comes to performances and the arts in general, constructive criticism helps in making performers and artists better. Sometimes an outside eye sees things that us, as performers, don’t see. Therefore, criticism is not an attempt to belittle the performer, but to help make the performer a stronger artist and to perform better in their craft.
