  • MALTA! FIRST TIMER'S VLOG - Part One
    Malta, officially the Republic of Malta), is an island country in southern Europe, located in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago between Italy and Libya. It lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily, Italy, 284 km (176 mi) east of Tunisia, and 333 km (207 mi) north of Libya. The official languages are Maltese and English, and the nation's capital is Valletta.
    We begin this vlog with the first full day we have on this beautiful island as I marvel at its natural beauty, tranquil attractions and fascinating history. Jet lag aside, come along with me to explore what this awesome destination has to offer for the curious. And we set foot in Popeye Village, Mdina and Rabat.

    I wont ever get to Malta, too far away and I'm too old so this travelogue serves as a substitute glimpse at a fascinating country. Thanks, Ryan, for doing all the hard work. Looking forward to subsequent vlogs. Cheers.

    Hello from Adelaide. My partner Hugh and I had a wonderful stay in Malta at Naxxar. Busses go to all sorts of places from there. We stayed in a studio apartment at a retirement village called Hilltop Gardens. It gave us an idea how it might be if we went there again for really old age. A nice place. It gets you away from the tourists and in touch with Maltese.

      This trip to Europe was planned to happen over COVID. Obviously the world went to shit for 2 years so this is a long time coming. Hubby's father is from Gozo so we've always wanted to visit for a while now. That's why we went to Malta. And I want to go back, it's just so beautiful and 5 days isn't enough.

      Oh snap! You're Maltese! That's so cool... Funny how I've always known about Malta since I was 12 when I was in school in Singapore. Singapore and Malta were working closely together at some point because they both got their independence around the same time from UK. Both PMs visited each other frequently and for a brief moment, Singapore Airlines flew to Malta with their 747s or 707s. And now my husband is Maltese. So it was all leading up to this! Haha...

      @@ryansofly I vaguely remember the Malta-Singapore relationships but definitely recollect the Singapore Airlines 747 flights to Malta, I used to wag school to go watch them land (we lived not far from the airport). They were used primarily to bring Maltese migrants from Australia to holiday in Malta. That started my love affair with Australia and eventually migrating. Lucky you having Maltese husband, the best :)

    Mr. Ryan thank you for this video. Very pleasant and informative to watch. However, as a Maltese living abroad, I have noticed that Popeye Village has become a tourist trap and it has nothing to do with Malta's, History , culture and aesthetics of the surrounding environment. So the sooner that garbage is taken down the better. In the past 40 years, the environment has gone through a lot of destruction and harm. Not to mention the congestive roads and volume of traffic. Plus I have noticed the old red British left over of letter boxes and disused Telephone booths! What an eye sore and annoying sight to remind us all of the British colonial past! Prosit, and good luck on your other destinations.

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  5 месяцев назад +2

      I hear you, we went to Popeye's early in the morning before the crowd arrived. As we were leaving, that one and only narrow farm road leading in only allows ONE car to pass at any time. It was tough getting out. I cannot imagine this in summer. A lot of these places I went to on this trip are only a one off, tick off the list and don't have to return. Ah yes, colonization. I too grew up in Singapore post British rule and the consensus was they let us down by failing in defending the island from a Japanese invasion during WW2. That's why post independence, Malta and Singapore were sister countries for a while. We got our independence around the same time, our PMs visited each other, And let's not forget Singapore Airlines flying to Malta with their 747s. 🙂
