I came to the comments to say this lol. It's like the Dollar General version of Technology Connections, and that exactly what I want from this channel lol
17:00 At this forward view, you may need additional lighting in the room but on your person and the desk. It seems very dark or dim lit even with the brighter background lighting. I wonder what "technology connections" uses for his forward lighting.
Cover the LED strips with thick masking tape, you can use that for diffusion a bit too. I'd really get something to hang some giant sheets of paper or frosted plastic to help diffuse the main stick light you're using.
It looks great. It's almost scary how similar our book collections and interests are. My oldest friend, now 71, and I still laugh over using an aluminum snow saucer and a coffee can feed horn while standing on my apartment fire escape in a blizzard trying to dial in a system to pirate an early microwave distribution system that had skinamax AND playboy. Then we were nuts enough to wind a helical and so out into the storm again and try to snag a reflection off a tall building in Baltimore as there was a TV tower with guy lines in the way eating the direct signal from the source. Yup, in the very early 1980's... Now I'm 66, thin hair, bad knees, blown out shoulders, and still stringing antennas and playing with anything that smells of fun. Never retreat, never surrender, just move slower :-) I love watching your channel, makes me feel the same excitement we had back then and ready to fool with the newest crop of low cost VNAs, SDR's, and weather satellites. Some of the military weather stuff you have played with is the current generation of flights I worked on circa 1979. Great to see. Happy new year!
The new video area has turned out very nicely. I also really like the video area in the garden, especially when something involving satellite dishes is done there. I think the solution with the table is great, and the fact that the table doesn't have an electric motor is a big advantage for me. This table always works, even during a power outage. Electric motors can break and are difficult to replace, so I love these simple spring-powered systems that function without electricity. Messiness and books - I don’t know, I just can’t throw books away, and I’m reluctant to give them away. The internet is nice, sure, but books are something entirely different, and they work without electricity too. I always see the positive side of things; for me, not everything has to be connected to a power line. Now I’m looking forward to the new projects.
Gabe, I use a Glue called Goop to glue my LED strips down, holds really well when it dries but can be removed fairly easily from a smooth surface if you dob it right. I use it a lot on electronics for stabilization. I used Goop for repairing shoes, gluing apple power supplies cases back together when I was repairing cords on them, and use it to cover low-voltage frayed wires to get a little more life out of them. It is good stuff and you can get it at most hardware stores or online.
check the CRI values of lights that are going to light you - led strips usually are ~80 so colors will always look odd. you can get some 95+ CRI bulbs, get those long balcony planters, drill and mount light sockets through their bottoms and cover the top with tracing paper for some nice, soft, quality DIY lights
watching out for the LED lights being QRM generators. The cabinets look great - the table looks very practical. Enjoyed the cats alot, they are very cute !
the hinges for the doors on the shelves are adjustable. you loosen a screw so you can slide a portion of the hinge in or out so get it to balance properly and shut completly with minimal gap between the 2 doors. OR........ magnets.
There weren't any instructions on that, and I couldn't get them to shut by randomly messing with the adjustment screws, so I gave up. The magnets help keep the cats out of there too, otherwise Fluff knows how to open doors.
Looks great. I would dim the cabinet lights a bit down, so the camera does not compensate for the bright background and would make the overall scene lighter.
Somehow spring cleaning came early for me too. Managed to get my electronics workbench cleaned and organized, and my wife was gracious enough to shuffle some of her craft drawers around so that I could get my stuff all in one shelf.
Mans got himself a busted Allan pan shirt and an entire ikea Christmas dinner then got swindled into fine Swedish furnishings on a zero down ikea Mastercard. Pure class and I’m here for it all and more thank you
Also it was so fun watching the cats jump around in the timelapse! Good job on growing this channel and entertaining everyone with you fun and informative content! Cheers~
When it comes to adhesive lights hot glue works well but you have to use it like a staple. A nice line across the strip onto the wood in intervals works well. Cozy setup
Awesome setup! It’s great to get some more use out of the same space. I’m always improving and adding equipment to my setups and they are always in action! I’m sure this will definitely help out with organizing and working on projects. Can’t wait to see how else you’ll use the new setup, lots of future potential!
18:05 When you switched to the GoPro the auto lighting/white balance looked significantly better than the main camera! I would keep using the GoPro as the primary camera if you can work with the wider angle...
Sometimes, all it takes is a nice piece of furniture to brighten up the room, positively directing the energy and feel of the space. I guarantee that having everything neat and organized will make you feel better about being in the office! Ultimately, making the time spent in that room more enjoyable! I.Feel if you tackle one area at a time that you could slowly improve each space, eventually improving the overall positive energy of the property. Thank you for creating these films. Please don't stop so that.We may enjoy them for the rest of our lives.
Thoroughly heat the Ikea stickers with a hairdryer >before< you start to peel them - once you have ripped them or pulled them off cold they leave an annoying residue. Isopropyl alcohol usually helps remove the residue though it may take several tries and rubbing with a cotton cloth.
Gabe it looks fantastic bro. Im well surprised you haven't hit your 1st million subs. You're mentioned by so many RUclipsrs. However thats only around the corner. Keep up the excitement, and love how honest you're in real time. You never give up. May 2025 bring you the best.
Your smile is infectious! Love the Mythbusters shirt too. That show was definitely influential in my life. The scientific methodology of screwing stuff up until is works is such a beautiful thing. And I love watching you trouble shoot and go back to the drawing board on stuff when it doesn’t go as planned. Thank you for your passion for life and sharing that with us all.
That filming area looks really good now Gabe. It was nice that Donny and Fluff gave their time up to help with this project, they're pretty skilled kitties!
Holy mismatched color temperature lights, Axman! You need way more light than 2 under cabinet lights on far walls - it looks like you're filming in a cave with a flashlight pointed at you
Nice job on the remodel I wish I had that much space in my radio room. We don't have an Ikea store where I live but after watching this video, I was surprised how flimsy the books cases, shelves, doors appear and having to add magnets to keep the doors closed is a big minus for me. Love the cats!
Gonna be honest that I am going to miss seeing your filing cabinet with all the stickers and stuff all over it. Something about your filming space being adhoc felt like it fit the re-usability aesthetic. But its great to see something new and im sure we will see great content in the new space!
I subbed about a month ago and I enjoy your projects. I am also glad you are getting upgrades. I have never seen other youtubers doing satellite dish projects before and that really got me interested in your incoming videos as well. keep up the great work! by the way I would try to keep the cats out of that filming room because the heavy shelf could fall on them and hurt them badly.
LED tape simplest, because it is separate lines, is to make a set of 3 DC current sources, or a simple adjustable power resistor per line, to provide a easy to adjust source for each LED colour.
This is an awesome improvement to the channel for sure. If you’re really trying to up production value, you could probably do a basic 2-point lighting setup with large diffusers. If you want to get really scrappy, a light bulb with a high CRI and a white sheet as a diffuser would go a long way.
I like the idea of the "studio corner" for the recording and the layout. But the fact that you chose glass doors is difficult. It will certainly be difficult to get good lighting without having distracting reflections in the panes. Great for the apartment, but I would have done without it as a background for recordings.
Those meatballs! Went to the Ikea in Chicago (Schaumburg) when I was a guest speaker at VCFMW19. It was a highlight of the entire weekend. (although Uno's pizza in Downtown Chi was pretty awesome as well).
The new set looks great! I don't know what it is, but so many people I know in the computer geek/hacking, science fiction fandom/conventions, SCA, etc communities have Ikea BIlly bookcase systems. Good SF choices, Jack Chalker, Robert Heinlein, Spider Robinson, Larry Niven Neal Stephenson, Steve, er, S.M. Stirling, etc. I've known Steve Stirling for many years from back when he lived in Toronto the same time I did. Loaned him my computer when his died two days before the deadline for his first Man-Kzin collab with Jerry Pournelle. He later bought that computer from me. Great guy, great writer.
@6:04 Just a tip... Zippo lighter fluid is by far the best solvent I've found for removing stubborn sticky adhesives from labels and stickers; give it a try. I like it because unlike Goo-Gone or other similar cleaners, the lighter fluid will evaporate if you don't get it all off, unlike Goo-Gone, et al.
That was worth waiting until the end as usual~ You really made a nifty place to go on YT adventures to take us on~ I'm slowly getting the hardware to do weird things with Raspberry Pi's and really need to get busy with Arduino and the M5 products.... Almost went fully jellybeans with all the books and contents of the display case but cat content leveled me out ^_^
If you want it to look good you can get high CRI lights and match their color temperature. They sell high CRI led strips too but those are pricey and there don't have as many color temp options. I'd personally go for 3000K given the option for a soft warm look and high CRI is usually cheaper at that temp. You could also try bouncing lights off the ceiling toward you to limit the shadows without it blinding you.
This looks really great! Big improvement although I really had no issue with other set up. I focus on what you are doing, not if you decorated it but your new set up is easy on the eyes.
Donny has a cat tree next to my desk and there's a bed on top of the desk, but they usually want to be on the keyboard or on whatever I'm working on :-P
I really liked your old video corner and the garage and basement though. :) Sure the funky lights ikea shelves won't hurt but your channel is great because of cool projects made from old junk and the fact that you didn't care about fancy backdrops for filming kinda reflected that and made it even better. :D The kittens seem to like your new setup though and they know best.

That would be awesome

@@searingxhereticThis is an underrated comment

6:10 razor scraper and GooGone (or nail polish remover even). Plastic razor scraper for softer surfaces..
Upvote, googone is the best
I find isopropyl alcohol usually does the trick with sticker residue.
@@caulkins69 That works, but alcohol evaporates quickly, so it smears the glue more than it cleans it.
+1 GooGone.
Acetone and paper, how hard can it be.
