- This is my take on installing faux shiplap. Actual cost, actual materials used.
Check out my other video where I talk about the behind the scenes realistic cost and work of this project: • Video
Please note, I did not use wood putty to fill in any seams or nail holes. I love the look of the nail holes and decided to fill all seams with caulk.

A tip, hold the level under the board so it's resting under the board, holding it on the face of the board doesn't give an accurate reading of the board
Using a primer first will help you to cover the plywood quicker with fewer coats of paint.
Tip for the wood tearing out would be put painters tape on it before you mark and cut it. ( Then cut and peal the tape. )
This looks amazing. Thanks for sharing with such great tips and instructions!
Just a couple tips for people watching this and wanting to do it...Home Depot actually sells shiplap that clicks into each other. They're about $9 per long board and they come in a grey/blue raw wood, a stained raw wood, as well as white. Just cut your measurements and nail it to the wall. In this video you can also notice the cuts made everywhere and if you're OCD about detail like I am, those long board options from Home Depot make it so you don't have to make middle-wall cuts. You can also see spots between the boards where white paint wasn't used between and under each board so make sure to take a paint brush to get between the boards once they're on the wall. Overall it looks really nice and this was a lot of work!
Brittany B you’re right, this was a ton of work! I didn’t miss any spots with paint, so I’m not sure what you’re seeing. A smaller room and I would have just bought the premade shiplap but this room is about 17x20 and I could not afford that. Thanks for the compliment, stopping in and watching!
Bell and Cotton We just completed our large dining room wall using the shiplap boards from Home Depot and the total cost was about $150 for the boards, paint, & spackle to fill the holes. It was super easy to do because the pieces just slid into each other. I just wanted to share that option here for people wanting to do this to their walls but aren’t aware of the connecting boards at their local Home Depot. We’re doing major house renovations to our entire home and wanted to save the time. I was also just referring to parts where the paint went between the boards making it look like some parts of the wall are completely connecting (all white) and some parts the natural wood is still shown between the boards. With the Pre made ship lap, the spaces between already match the color of the ship lap.
Brittany B I recently bought boxes of this shiplap from Home Depot that fit together. Each box covers a 14.5 Sqf area. $25.99 per box. FYI for those that don’t know Plywood cut in planks is not shiplap.
Plywood is not Shiplap. The boards need to be fitted to be shiplap style.
Exactly. They are doing a cheap budget knockoff with plywood strips which is completely different. Not shiplap at all
So how exactly do you use nickels? do you use the same one? do you place nickel in between nail it and remove nickel and place on the other side? Didn't see it close up in the video
Awesome! i was gonna order a bunch of mdf shiplap but seeing how easy this is I'll be going with cheap plywood, thank you!
david murphy that’s awesome! Good luck!
Home Depot sells the Porter Cable compressor kit that includes the compressor, 16g finish nailer, 18g brad nailer, and a 3/8 stapler for $199
Mattila the Hun I bought that sane kit lol
amazing job. I love how you explained everything. I've been wanting to do this in my home too, so thanks for sharing this!
I am curious about the painting part. Did you just roller the surface and leave the edges of the plywood unpainted?
In 45 years of carpentry I have never seen anyone use a level like you did. lol Also they make these special glasses that go over your eyes when using power tools. One kickback on the table saw, and a flying chip, you will be picking out a new glass eye or nice eyepatch.
Haha live and learn? I certainly have invested in better safety gear and I also have learned a lot since I made this video three years ago
Great video. Most professional. Good luck. Happy New Year!
Ty for sharing. We are about to do the exact same. Yours looks 👍
Looks great. Great video.
WOW Megan!!! That was so informative!! And goodness, it looks like a massive job. I don't think I'll be doing this anytime soon over here, though it would make a gorgeous accent wall!
It's looks really cute. I love shiplap also.
Andrea Garcia Thank you!
After using the 1/4" plywood would you still recommend that thickness or the thicker 1/2" plywood?
I think when people say it is a cheap job, they assume you have the tools.
That's probably true, but I think they maybe referring to the cost comparison of "real" shiplap.
@@politicsprophecy1842 yah, but, shiplap needs tools aswell
@@louiestarrz most men start buying tools when they’re boys
@@joeantolak4629 I don't understand why you are telling me that.
I LOVE it! Great job! 💜
Donna Torres thank you!
Great work and detailed information, thank you. Looks great
Try putting down some painters tape, the heaviest one you can find, over the spot where your going to cut. This helps stop the wood from chipping. Also works with heavier laminates; like Formica.
Jill Holmes I love this idea! Thank you!!
You’re welcome.
is there any chance the planks can come off and disconnect from the finish nail? As in the plank will move forward and come off the front of the finish nail as the plywood is so thin.
If that's a concern, or if you're dealing with plaster walls, you can always find and pre-mark the studs so you can drive into that. Construction adhesive is another option to use with the nail gun.
That looks gorgeous, my sister in law loves diy ,my brother not so much , def gonna share this vid
Thank you so much 🤗
Beautiful! I’m doing faux shiplap wall in my living room and am brushing it on so I won’t have roller stipple - did you have any stipple texture from your roller?
No, but I have previously when I used a wet roller ( I was reusing it after rinsing it and cleaning it,) I believe it can also happen if your nap is too long and you're rolling on a smooth surface. You want to check that your roller is made for the surface you're rolling on.
For future reference, you can take the motion sensor down instead of cutting the wood. It's just 1 or 2 screws through the sheetrock. You don't even have to unhook the cable.
Thank you Justin! I was scared to mess with it.
With your long wall did you just use an 8 ft piece of ply wood them a shorter piece? I have a 17 ft wall. What would you suggest
You guys did great
Hi! That looks awesome. I looked at Home Depot at plywood but I don’t knkw which to chose? What size dimensions did you use? Was it actual plywood or “underpayment plywood”
Chuckomatics thank you! The sheets come in standard size at our local Home Depot. And we used 1/4” plywood. I do not recommend buying underlayment as it is not smooth and won’t mimic real shiplap. Good luck!
Where did you get your wood bar stools in the room at the end of the video? I love them and think it would look great against my shiplap
Tessa Stone Kirkland’s! And they still have them. I saw them the other day!
Bell and Cotton thank you!
Looks good.
Hello, great job, did you nail it to the studs or just drywall?
Really nice job!
My Home Depot did my cuts to but they did charge a small fee but I was glad I could get it done
MsLeelee94 I wish! I keep hearing mixed feedback on whether Home Depot will do specific cuts. Worked out fine for us since we have a table saw, but would have been nice to have it done! Lol
Lowe's cuts ALL my boards every time!!!
You can use a utility knife and a straight edge to make a knife wall for the saw blade to limit or eliminate the fraying
Love!
Looks good!
What type /kind of plywood did you use????
You're right about Lowes and Home Depot - the employees that their saw wasn't a "project saw" and that the stores would only cut the wood so it could fit in your car. Not used to be like that though...
I’m about to start putting up my plywood planks similarly to yours. (I love how yours looks - thank you for sharing!) And I’m wondering - I had planned to apply construction adhesive in addition to nailing them, but noticed that you did not. Any regrets about that? I’m tempted to not glue! :)
You can do it! And we just made sure to hit some studs with our nails, no glue needed.
Great job on the video and explaining everything you did. I enjoyed watching your step by step and tips. It’s always great to see how other people are completing their projects. I’ve used this very same medium for several refacing projects in my home.
Thank you so much.. very helpful..
Great video! Thank you!
Home Depot will give 10% off to Military, Home Depot in most markets will cut lumber but may charge you a cutting fee per cut after 4 or 5 cuts. Home Depot in most markets have tool rentals which could save you money on your projects. Thank you very much for taking the time to sharing this very informative video Bell and Cotton!!!!
Hi, Did you not worry about hitting studs at the end if each board?
I just made sure I hit a stud at least once on each board. Years later, everything is great
How long would you say one wall took?
nice work. outlet needs to sit outside the 1/4 inch plywood to make it a flush install
Great job, it looks great, but why did you start at the top and work down? Would'nt it have been easier to start at the bottom?
Ace Oswell May have been easier but because the walls aren’t perfectly level, we wanted any eye sores to be at the bottom where furniture would cover or you wouldn’t notice. And I’m glad we did it that way.
Did you caulk before you painted or after? Did you use white caulk or clear?
I like to caulk before I paint, everything tends to look more seamless that way. I used white caulk.
Looks great!!! Did you paint in between the boards?
Wendy Affholder I painted the walls before I hung the boards. I used dove white by Benjamin Moore.
Wow!👏👏👏👏
Oh my gosh, quarter inch plywood at $15 a sheet. Makes me want to cry. I paid $17 today for 5 mm, the quarter inch was over 60.
Nice end result! Home Depot and Lowes lied though, because they both cut wood and most of the time for free, just give them a day or two notice. I had 9 sheets of plywood cut for a project similar to this and Lowes did it all.
Thanks for the tip!
Looks great! how did you cut the ply wood?
LaMarr Mingle ummm did you even watch the video?
You both did a great job, it's just a shame that your 4th wall planks didn't line up with the others.
Megan beautiful job...I am thinking of doing this on just one wall in my very tiny bathroom...I dont have power tools and I was so frightened when you said home depot woukd not cut the ply wood into strips...that sucks...I may have to rethink my idea...bcuz I juat can't go buy power tools...I aint got no where to put any of that stuff...
I've heard Home Depot will make cuts at certain locations. Mine will only cut things down to fit in your car. Its worth a try!
Cool
Love your project!!!
KILZ primer on the plywood would’ve prevented so many coats of actual paint😉
Hey Megan.Loved the video and not being a hater but i noticed when you were painting the small return wall that the lines did not match was that done on purpose or you guys missed it.Im a carpenter by trade just asking again great job.
Haha it was definitely an accident. My husband made the cuts and we did that wall with the leftover strips of plywood so they were all an 8th of an inch thinner. One day maybe I’ll go back and fix it. But this was one of the first diy projects we did and have learned a ton since.
i bought the same table saw never used it i gotta figure out how to use it so my home depot did cut for me
My experience in painting luon is that it will buckle and blister from the wet paint.
nice job...now on to more jobs to pay for those tools!lol I've been there done that! Finished product looks nice. Shows how much work you put into it!
how2q seriously! Good news is I’m planning to do planked flooring in my house soon so it will have been well worth the investment I think. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
Love this. Next time try priming the boards, then use a premium paint and primer blend like Sherwin Williams Showcase you will only need 1 to 2 coats.
Thank you i will make it in indonesian.. where are you from??
There are some small things that need to be changed but overall this is a great tutorial. Home Depot along with Menards will cut wood for you possibly at a small charge. Buying all these supply’s is not needed. Some hone depots and aces you can rent items and it will cost a lot less. Also you don’t need to spend $170 on a nail gun I bought mine for $60 and it works amazing never had any issues with it.
Beauty Glam Girl when you have a husband who gets involved in your projects, he buys he tools he wants! 😂 but we have used every tool in this project and will continue to over the use as everything is of wonderful quality and made to last. Thanks for stopping in and watching!
Hold level under board and use liquid nails on each board.
Not sure where you live but my Home Depot cuts all mine with no cost and a smile.
shaune parker that’s so great for you! Enjoy!
You are so lucky!! They won't do it here.
shaune parker Lowe's cut a 4'×8' sheet for me. I wanted 6" planks cut lengthwise. 7 cuts. First two cuts are free, then it's 0.25 per cut after that.
Aaaand Lowe's gives a 10% military discount whereas Home Depot doesn't.
@@ceecee8757 actually, home depot DOES give a 10% military discount. at least the ones around here, do.
why is only above the window bricklay pattern?
All of the walls in this room are bricklayed because the walls are wider than the width of the plywood we used. The seams between the planks that are bricklayed were filled with wood filler.
What paint did you use?
Benjamine Moore White dove in matte
oh one more thing, lowes and home depot can and usually will rip the ply wood for you. they probably just didnt feel like it. HOWEVER their rips are garbage and will ruin the boards unless you have a jointer. just rip the boards your self with a circular saw with a guide to sizes that are manageable on a table saw. you should definitely have a table saw, sliding miter saw, sander, jig saw, and a 18ga brad nailer with 1 1/4 nails. heres a good tip. THEY SELL SPACERS IN THE TILE SECTION. YOU CAN GET A WHOLE BAG FOR CHEAP AND YOU CAN GET THEM IN WHAT EVER SIZE YOU LIKE
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Nice job. Cool music.
Home depot cut ours for free.
We did sand the edges.
Home Depot will cut your wood for you I have it done all the time but they do charge per cut.
Exactly on Home Depot cutting ur wood!!! Only 10 cuts is their maximum i was told, "new rule". I even offered to pay but they said no!! I did call Lowes and they charged $0.50 a cut after so many which I was fine with but they were out of the plywood I wanted.
Great video. Air or pneumatic gun/tool no eye protection :(
Cool you did nickels
personally i love stained wood and would have stained my wood different shades per piece
Omg. Diy
Backwards hat gang!
I immediately stopped watching when they didnt know how to use a level properly doing the 1st piece.
🙄
😬
lol "how to actually". not trying to be mean but this is wrong and it could adversely affect your ability to sell your house later on if done this way. potential buyers may require you to have this corrected before buying which could cost a fortune... the right way would have been to remove the stool and apron from the windows, cased the windows out with the ply-wood planks, then installed ship lap, and then reinstall stool and apron and window casing.
aaronmpeters26 thanks for the opinion. We had our house appraised a few months after we finished this project and it actually added value! Hooray for us. We aren’t perfect. This is how WE did this project and this is a video showing how we did it.
You’re reaching shut up lol Aaron
Sucks that plywood is so expensive now 😂it’s like 60$ for a sheet of plywood now. Fml!!!
We just had home depot cut all of our plywood for free
It is true that home depot will cut the wood for you, just because yours didn't doesn't make it true.
just google Stodoys plans :))
You got ripped off at Home Depot lol they definitely do project cuts...
Digital Cam that’s good to know yours does. Mine doesn’t.
I've lived in three different states and it varies from store to store even within state.
That's not shiplap, it's buttress.
What is it with American's, this is not shiplap boarding, period.
Elfin4 that’s why it is labeled “plywood shiplap” in the title. But thank you for the rude comment anyway. Have a nice day!
@@MeganBell It wasn't a rude comment I am merely stating a fact. There are many RUclips videos from America calling this method of boarding/paneling as shiplap, but it is simply incorrect. If you cant accept a little truth and comment then why post the video in the first place.
Elfin4 it is for a shiplap “look” and I don’t post videos asking for criticism, I post them in hopes to share information that may help someone else.
@@MeganBell If you post something, be a big girl and accept the comments that you dont want to hear, that's how intelligent people learn from mistakes.
Elfin4 oh thank you so much for the school lesson today! I sure enjoyed it!
You should have pulled the window trim.
****Kid, this is NOT how you install "shiplap". As the name suggests, it must, in fact, overlap in order to be shiplap. You never start at the top and you should always have equal width boards at the top and bottom for uniformity. You should also always scribe your top and bottom boards so you don't have that horrendous gaps. You are giving bad advice or, at best, telling them how to do a terribly amateur job that will lower their home value.
EnigmaPSU we had our house appraised after we installed this and it added value to our home 😂 also I never claimed to be a contractor or a professional. This is a diy home project for aesthetic purposes only, but thank you for your opinion! Maybe you should start your own RUclips channel and make your own video about shiplap!
If you add a “mud ring” to your outlet boxes it will extend your outlet out, making it flush with the new wall. You won’t have a gap between your outlet and outlet cover
Ross Ramsay they make extenders for outlets, a mud ring is used for low voltage.
