  • This is my take on installing faux shiplap. Actual cost, actual materials used.
    Check out my other video where I talk about the behind the scenes realistic cost and work of this project: • Video
    Please note, I did not use wood putty to fill in any seams or nail holes. I love the look of the nail holes and decided to fill all seams with caulk.

    A tip, hold the level under the board so it's resting under the board, holding it on the face of the board doesn't give an accurate reading of the board

  • @frankthorpe3160
    @frankthorpe3160 4 года назад +8

    Using a primer first will help you to cover the plywood quicker with fewer coats of paint.

    Tip for the wood tearing out would be put painters tape on it before you mark and cut it. ( Then cut and peal the tape. )

    Just a couple tips for people watching this and wanting to do it...Home Depot actually sells shiplap that clicks into each other. They're about $9 per long board and they come in a grey/blue raw wood, a stained raw wood, as well as white. Just cut your measurements and nail it to the wall. In this video you can also notice the cuts made everywhere and if you're OCD about detail like I am, those long board options from Home Depot make it so you don't have to make middle-wall cuts. You can also see spots between the boards where white paint wasn't used between and under each board so make sure to take a paint brush to get between the boards once they're on the wall. Overall it looks really nice and this was a lot of work!

    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  6 лет назад

      Brittany B you’re right, this was a ton of work! I didn’t miss any spots with paint, so I’m not sure what you’re seeing. A smaller room and I would have just bought the premade shiplap but this room is about 17x20 and I could not afford that. Thanks for the compliment, stopping in and watching!

      Bell and Cotton We just completed our large dining room wall using the shiplap boards from Home Depot and the total cost was about $150 for the boards, paint, & spackle to fill the holes. It was super easy to do because the pieces just slid into each other. I just wanted to share that option here for people wanting to do this to their walls but aren’t aware of the connecting boards at their local Home Depot. We’re doing major house renovations to our entire home and wanted to save the time. I was also just referring to parts where the paint went between the boards making it look like some parts of the wall are completely connecting (all white) and some parts the natural wood is still shown between the boards. With the Pre made ship lap, the spaces between already match the color of the ship lap.

      Brittany B I recently bought boxes of this shiplap from Home Depot that fit together. Each box covers a 14.5 Sqf area. $25.99 per box. FYI for those that don’t know Plywood cut in planks is not shiplap.

    • @tampacrew22
      @tampacrew22 5 лет назад +1

      Plywood is not Shiplap. The boards need to be fitted to be shiplap style.

    Try putting down some painters tape, the heaviest one you can find, over the spot where your going to cut. This helps stop the wood from chipping. Also works with heavier laminates; like Formica.

    is there any chance the planks can come off and disconnect from the finish nail? As in the plank will move forward and come off the front of the finish nail as the plywood is so thin.

      If that's a concern, or if you're dealing with plaster walls, you can always find and pre-mark the studs so you can drive into that. Construction adhesive is another option to use with the nail gun.

    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  3 года назад +1

      No, but I have previously when I used a wet roller ( I was reusing it after rinsing it and cleaning it,) I believe it can also happen if your nap is too long and you're rolling on a smooth surface. You want to check that your roller is made for the surface you're rolling on.

    lol "how to actually". not trying to be mean but this is wrong and it could adversely affect your ability to sell your house later on if done this way. potential buyers may require you to have this corrected before buying which could cost a fortune... the right way would have been to remove the stool and apron from the windows, cased the windows out with the ply-wood planks, then installed ship lap, and then reinstall stool and apron and window casing.

    It is true that home depot will cut the wood for you, just because yours didn't doesn't make it true.

    What is it with American's, this is not shiplap boarding, period.

      @MeganBell  5 лет назад +1

      Elfin4 that’s why it is labeled “plywood shiplap” in the title. But thank you for the rude comment anyway. Have a nice day!

      @@MeganBell It wasn't a rude comment I am merely stating a fact. There are many RUclips videos from America calling this method of boarding/paneling as shiplap, but it is simply incorrect. If you cant accept a little truth and comment then why post the video in the first place.

    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  5 лет назад +1

      Elfin4 it is for a shiplap “look” and I don’t post videos asking for criticism, I post them in hopes to share information that may help someone else.

    You should have pulled the window trim.
    ****Kid, this is NOT how you install "shiplap". As the name suggests, it must, in fact, overlap in order to be shiplap. You never start at the top and you should always have equal width boards at the top and bottom for uniformity. You should also always scribe your top and bottom boards so you don't have that horrendous gaps. You are giving bad advice or, at best, telling them how to do a terribly amateur job that will lower their home value.

      EnigmaPSU we had our house appraised after we installed this and it added value to our home 😂 also I never claimed to be a contractor or a professional. This is a diy home project for aesthetic purposes only, but thank you for your opinion! Maybe you should start your own RUclips channel and make your own video about shiplap!

    If you add a “mud ring” to your outlet boxes it will extend your outlet out, making it flush with the new wall. You won’t have a gap between your outlet and outlet cover

      Ross Ramsay they make extenders for outlets, a mud ring is used for low voltage.
