I still don't manage it this way. The yellow ball/jump mechanic is fundamentally broken, and takes away a lot of the fun of an otherwise excellent game.

It's just a mechanic, it's consistent when you understand how it works. Basically you need to get in contact with the ball when you're in the air.
Moving in the same direction helps building speed.
And then when you've been pushed in the air you can just jump without even inputing a direction, the momentum will do its work by itself.

@@Wis76 It's broken in the sense that it's just too damn difficult to pull off. As you grow older, reaction times go down, and this needs VERY accurate timing. After trying unsuccessfully for dozens of times, and falling down and having to walk back to the launch pad, it gets a bit tedious. And this is the only part of the game where this happens.
