- Dragging down cow manure, pocket gopher mounds and fire ant hills. It is for 3 purposes. 1- to help keep the pasture smoother . 2- to reduce wear and tear or hay cutting equipment. 3- to help fertilize a larger area instead of the concentrated spot the manure lands on.
That's a great way to spread the manure.... and cheap to make also. Like they say.........use what ya got. Love it. Thanks for sharing.

Really great idea! You stated that's it's not a very smooth field. But if you keep dragging it every year, I'll bet it'll get a lot smoother as the years go by.

If you cut the tires in 1/2 and do the same thing, you'll find it works a lot better, plus the manure and hay doesn't build up inside the tires. With the 1/2 cut tires open side down, it'll also break up and move the matted hay. Then on the top, round side, bolt boards with a section of angle iron for an edge and you can flip it over and really level a pasture where there's hoof holes. I'll post a video at some point. I've had a few more request to build some for friends and neighbors after they saw how good the ones I've built work.

@@ThaDiscoFreak I've made two with cut tires so far. One similar to this with cut tires, I used military truck tires, they are rather thick and stiff. The first one another horse farm operator bought for use at her farm. The second one is a two tire one we pull with a four-wheeler. Two tires like the one we use is almost too much for a 2WD TRX250, the 4WD TRX500 is better suited. If I get a chance, I'll post a video of it soon on my channel. Mine more for breaking up the manure piles, but it does fill in and scrape good prints. It's a PITA to cut the military tires in half. It took some serious "playing around" to figure out an "easy" way to cut them.

I use my lawn tractor and 2 tires, we only have 2.5 acer's and 2.5 horses (one's a mini) I go around and around untill it looks nice and squished in, before a good rain or I water it in. Works awesome 😉

ran across a couple 5 gallon buckets of 1 1/8 bolts and nuts at an estate sale cheap! ran them through the tires with some big washers on both sides. the bolts created a harrow like action and the field came back with some incredible growth.
I bet that helped get the moisture and air in.

+Farnsworth Farms I got those from my friend that owns a tire store. I would rather have a mud and snow tire to build a drag out of. the extra roughness on the edge helps bust those tough gopher mounds loose.

That is so smart and effective. I think I'm going to try that with some old tractor tires. It's better than using a harrow with the teeth on the lowest setting.

This is how the old timers did it! Today the recycle center wants like $5 per tire disposal fee so most farmers have lots of old tires just laying around, easy to find tires for free to make one of these.

Chain link on a frame or even those chains on a frame work wonders and keep the same weight from start to finish!
At the same time don't get too heavy from everything that accumulate inside the tires! So no ripping effect on the soil and grasses. It simply break down and spread the pies.
With that in mind the lightest tractor possible is the best option, garden tractor or sub compact type of thing. Less soil compaction deliver an healthier soil.
Your three goals are absolutely correct. There's a fourth one, mostly overlooked. When the pies are spread over a broader area, They will dry and compost faster while not concentrating so big mass of larvae, etc. So less prone to spread diseases. ;-)

I like the ripping effect on the little bluestem grass and any woody stem weeds, fire anyt mound, gopher mounds. I have 250 acres to go over, Not going to happen with a little garden tractor. The cab tractor lets me stay out of the weather, that is why I bought it. I have X amount of time to do things weather permitting.But your points are valid.

How did you tie the tires together? Is it one long chain? If so, how'd you link it all together & then hook it to the tractor?
individual chains , bolted together around the tire. Just use a clevis to hook to the tractor.

good idea, we have so many root vole and moles, so do you think this will work for molehils too?
+gogonzogo1 . i don't have any experience with voles and moles. if it is dirt mounded up it should help. I don't think it will help much with shallow tunnels. It might cave them in but i don't know if it will be a improvement.

Yea just some cheap chinese chain and some bolts to hold it together. Works pretty good.

great idea.. did you have any trouble with build up in the tires?
It builds up a little, but i just figure it is extra weight to help with breaking up clods.
does a great job... I use an old spring tooth drag.. not heavy enough to knock down the big ones.. I think I'll add a row of tires on the end.. thank you OkieRob!!

How do you get the chains tight on the tires? What do you do or use?
They just need snugged up. I bolted the ends together.

Too late in the year, all the grass has gone dormant for the winter.
If you happen to do this procedure again when grass will grow afterwards, would you mind doing a quick video of growth/pasture recorvery afterwards? Any way it grows would be better than big ugly cows pats dotted all along a field. Seems less invasive than a harrow. Very good job, thanks for posting from a viewer from Ireland.

@@zfilmmaker Yes 20 or 24 inch, I don't remember. I'll try to drag it out of the grass . I just used short sections of chain wrapped around the tires to hold them together in that triangle shape. Cheap chinese chain and bolted the ends together. some tires have two chains, one going up and one going sideways.
OkieRobs Bees I scrutinized the video a little closer to see how it was done. You didn’t actually drill through the tire face to attach the chains, the chains are on the outside going around the tires, so they drag on the ground to? What size chain is it, 5/8”?
@@zfilmmaker correct the chain is on the outside. It's probably 5/16" chain. If it wears through I have extra to replace it.

you seriously need chickens and more pasture. some fence management as well. might want to look up some permaculture info and rotational grazing.
This is where i was feeding hay in the winter. There is no grazing here in the winter.
