I love your words about Jonghyun - I try to describe how I see him and end up struggling. In my many decades of life, he's the only person who's ever changed my understanding of what a musician can be. Absolutely once in a lifetime artist. His voice and range and ability to bring the emotions of a song to perfect life would be enough, but add in the lyrics he wrote, the music he composed, all the details, the nuances, the creativity... he continually blows my mind. Two years into having discovered him, I only get in deeper. (I was listening to one of the OSTs he sang this morning - "She" - and was struck by how much more interesting and compelling and creative his own music is. Poet/Artist indeed.)
My own favorites? Geez. That changes, based on mood. And forget *five*. But I'll give it a go :-)...
Top down:
Moon (my intro to him, sold me on him forever)
Beautiful Tonight (this is my all-time feel-good be-happy song, he just wraps you up in flirty smiles and warm hugs, and the little chiming sounds in the background just float you away)
Diphylleia Grayi (hauntingly otherworldly and lyrically so deep, a perfect example of Jjong's ability to take inspiration from unlikely things and create art)
Elevator (the purity of his voice here is too much; so sad, so beautiful)
Tie between Only One You Need and Take The Dive (the smooth urgency of both of them)
Honorable mentions? Everything else! But especially Let Me Out (for a number of reasons, despite the pain of the lyrics). And Rewind (who else would ever give us a song like this? Imo it's a flat-out genius look at the way minds can work, just existing). And Sightseeing (a cat's meow worked into the music? Jjong's attention to detail and fearless following of his own vision are breathtaking).
It's hard not to include I'm Sorry, though, especially after watching him perform it at The Story concert at the Agit. Gorgeous...
And the cockroaches song. No, I'll stop now. That's a good place to stop, where once again Jonghyun takes an unlikely subject and works his magic, turning it wry and charming and poignant around the edges.

I see we are of the same mind! The man was such a genius when it came to music making. From the lyrics, the beat, the flow, the rhythm, everything was taken into account. I’m so glad you’re able to enjoy his music still, we’ve got to raise him up. More people should know the musical giant that is Kim Jonghyun. Also very solid top picks and honorable mentions, I see we have a lot of the same choices. But even then always subject to change because there’s just SO many lol!
