  • Two Irish Traveller brothers made an extraordinary impact on Irish traditional music in the 20th century. The piping style, legacy and impact of the legendary Johnny and Felix Doran are explored by leading musicians, with exquisite analysis and anecdotes in a compelling story that lifts the veil to reveal the unique inside story of these two remarkable brothers.
John Purcell, the only direct descendant of Johnny Doran still playing pipes, speaks about the legacy of his grandfather, while his mother, Nan (nee Doran) Purcel, warmly recounts the happy memories of traveling the roads with her virtuoso father. Nan sadly passed away since this recording, making these recollections invaluable (She told me shortly before her death that these were the only interviews she ever did).
Oliver O’Connell and Leo Rickard testify to the impact the Dorans had on the mainstream piping and wider traditional music community. Martin Nolan gives an informative and moving analysis of Johnny Doran’s technique-not to be missed by any student of stylistic variations in Irish music. Felix Doran’s travels through Ireland, eventually settling in Manchester, are recounted but his son, Mikey, who introduces us to his musical family in England. Unique footage of the family reunion especially for the documentary is riveting.
The story is narrated with footage of the original equipment on which the recording took place and a fascinating recreation of Johnny Doran and John Kelly snr, recording The Tarbolton for the 1948 only recording of Doran is enacted and reimagined by John Kelly, jnr, and Alphie Mulligan. And much more besides!
