You’re misunderstanding the function. No matter where you are, you can always send messages. It never guarantees that anyone else will ever get them, but you can ALWAYS send messages.

The ds can't communicate between an entire mall. In fact, I remember that as soon as someone with the ds went outside of the house, or a different room, we would lose connection.

I was at camp, and at the end of the day waiting for parents we were allowed to use AEDs (approved electronic devices, ie DS was okay, the few cell phones were not).
And in this room that was maybe 3 classrooms put together, we would loose connection no big deal.
If someone had to charge their DS and left our area, they would almost always loose signal.
And that video was from MY city news

My favorite news freak-out is over Monster energy. Monster gets singled out, yet if you look up the stats 22 deaths have been caused by 5-hour energy, I want to say 3 by Red Bull and one by Nos, and the deaths reported were either triggered prior medical conditions or an incredibly stupid amount of drinks ingested. I work in medicine and I drink monster all the time, many of us do, so it pisses me off when the media rips specifically on Monster especially. Just a random little tidbit.
Or here's the big thing. NOBODY USES PICTOCHAT! Even if they do, if your kid is on the DS in the car, they'll be playing a game. Not on Pictochat waiting for the off chance that someone will send them a message.

When I had my first Nintendo DS, my parents didn't connect it to the internet, so I could only pictochat someone who was in within about 10 yards from me.
There, problem solved. :/
Plus, I didn't even know that it could connect to other people's DS's like that. I thought you had to be within a short distance, I found the thing useless. Me and my cousin only used it to play hangman or doodle silly things from right across each other.

Yeah, I had no idea how Pictochat worked back, so I had no idea that I was supposed to send messages to nearby DS's. So I ended up just playing around with the sketch feature and the emojis on the rare occasions that I did use it.

I call bull on the 300 feet thing, I could barely get my DS to communicate with my friend's DS from 40 ft away. Has anyone here ever gotten their's to react over 65 feet,(about 20 meters)?
Jess Ferrian I think they did that with extremely good wifi. Because the DS had to be able to pick up a signal in order to do it. So they probably had some pretty good connection over there.

...well then, I have absolutely no clue. I know the DS can't connect to wifi like the 3Ds but I thought it relied on the signal at least. THen again, I haven't used the system in ages as it is now unusable. So...very good luck?
Jess Ferrian think it depends on the area. I remember i tried it once in a big open building and it went twice as far. Interference I guess? Even though a mall would be quite busy and lots of interference id guess
***** I used to communicate with my friend on the patios of our apartment building. He'd be on his patio, and I'd be on mine. We would basically have to be hugging the railings closest to each other to chat. We had another patio between us, and that's where I got the 40 feet estimation from.

In Pictochat, you and any others must be in a chat room (A, B, C, or D) before you can begin communicating with each other, and even then, each room can only hold 12 people. Plus, Pictochat is local, meaning you can only communicate with someone nearby, not someone across the globe.
