Why Only 0.5% of the Marine Corps Become Recon Marines

  • The Recon Marines are a group of soldiers that are so elite, only 0.5% of Marines actually meet the standards to join.
Reconnaissance Marines are the special forces of the Marine Corps. Every Marine is eligible to join them regardless of their previous Military Occupational Specialty. But to even begin to be eligible, they must first pass all their prerequisite schools and training for their original MOS, then successfully pass a grueling 48-hour screener at the division level.
This screener often takes multiple attempts to pass, and candidates then go on to the 25-day Reconnaissance Training and Assessment Program. This additional 25-day screener further weeds out those who would not make it to Basic Reconnaissance Course. At BRC, this 12-week process typically sees a 50% attrition rate.
However, even after passing this milestone, Marines are still not done with training. Eventually, they must become airborne, combatant diver qualified, and any follow-on schools with their team, such as scout sniper school.

One of my best friends went straight to the Marine corps out of high school. He became an admin, he never did anything beyond sitting at a desk. I will never forget when he told me he was attached to a marine recon unit, we all thought that was amazingly cool. Then one night he told me that it's actually the worst assignment he's ever had. He went on to say that these guys drill and train constantly, they are the best the Marine corps has to offer, now as Marine of course you always think the Marines are the best so that's him pretty much saying they're the absolute best soldiers in the world. But then he told me something that made me laugh, he said they spend more time at the shooting range than anyone he's ever seen, and they shoot more rounds down range that I could ever imagine. And that is assignment as they're attached admin was to account for every single round. He would spend hours every day picking up and reboxing every piece of spent brass.
He did tell me though that much like you'd expect from every Marine those guys always offered to help him out with anything, and when they were doing standing drills you know right on the firing lines and not moving, he would be able to go to where every single one stood and find piles a brass, every single one of those Marines would take a moment to push all the brass together with their feet into a small pile just to make his day a little bit easier.

    Recon are hard as fuck.
I watched the toughest, fittest dude I'ev ever known, fail out twice. Then fail out of MARSOC. He always completed the training, but never passed selection. The reason they gave was his personality was not a good fit. Whatever that meant.
I got the pleasure of watching the soul of a few recon contract guys evaporate. For those unaware, usmc has recruit training at only two places. One for each side of the mississippi. But only one Recon training, and it's on Camp Pendleton.
So they east coast guys with recon contracts get sent to combat training with the west coast guys.
Most of them had never seen hills, let alone mountainous terrain. They died on the rucks.
Then we all got to watch the recon guys training in the same areas while we waited around for orders, multiple times.
I once watched them for four hours straight do the obstacle course over and over, dudes were literally falling off the rope at the end.
Immediately after finishing that slay fest, they grabbed a giant log with the words MFER or something along those lines written on it, it was about 3 or 4 feet in diameter and just a massive log. Four dudes loaded it onto their backs, and ran off to the mountains. The rest of them grabbed sandbags, 150lb dummies, and a bunch of other heavy crap and also ran with them.
The recon guys in my platoon had already given up by that point. They'd washed out before they even started lol.

Not because they arent every bit as BA as special forces units its because special forces fall under SOC (special operations command) and General Lemuel Shepherd, the founder of recon, wanted the recon marines to fall under Marine command and not SOC. The term "special forces" is not the general term for the cool kids in the U.S. military among the different branches. The U.S. Army has a specific unit called Special Forces and using "special forces" as the general term would be confusing. Additionally, while there are similarities, given the different mission sets I wouldn't really use Special Forces as a comparative reference between the two units to try to explain what Recon Marines are either.
