      @The All Father of death if you feel confident with the hitch at the plate, then continue to use it. You have to do whatever makes you the most confident that you’re going to hit the ball good at the plate. I don’t like to model my swing after Mlb players, because that’s what works for them and I just want to use what works for me. But really what’s most important is confidence. Good luck

    Bonds is the best hitter ever. He could see only two strikes the whole game and hit them both out of the park. Base open, it was an automatic walk. Even 400 hitters didn’t get that treatment.

      With all the great hitters present past you're actually putting Barry bonds is the best hitter. I take Ken Griffey Jr off him any day. Barry bonds was a one-dimensional player especially in his later years. He's a struck out of his home run. If you look at the stats a lot of his home runs were useless and didn't mean anything to the game.

    His swing is short and compact. He has an interview and says where the sweet spot of the bat is. It's about 2/3 to 3/5 on the way up on the bat. It explains how he can stay close to the plate and pull home runs. Just playing with metal bats I thought it was farther out.

    Hi Pro Speed Baseball (and others):
    In my opinion, next to Ted Williams, Barry Bonds is the best pure rotational hitter. Let’s analyze his swing. (Note: I am using what I have learned from the Mike and Jake Epstein School of Hitting to assess Bonds’ swing.)
    Lower Body
    1. Bonds’ front foot is open 45-90 degrees.
    2. Bonds’ back foot rotates on its ball, and the heel is nearly vertical.
    3. Bonds’ back leg is in an “L” shape (between 90-110 degrees). If one draws a line from Bonds’ back knee through Bonds’ back hip, that line will point back towards the catcher. Also, if one draws a line from Bonds’ back ankle through Bonds’ back knee, that line will point towards the pitcher. Since these two angles meet at a common midpoint (i.e., the knee), the result will be an “L” shape (again, between 90-110 degrees) in Bonds’ back leg.
    4. Bonds’ front leg will be rigid / locked.
    5. Bonds’ waist faces the pitcher.
    6. Bonds’ weight is against his back thigh.
    Upper Body
    1. Bonds’ upper body is tilted away from the pitch.
    2. Bonds’ front palm is down.
    3. Bonds’ back palm is up.
    4. Bonds’ head is level / up.
    5. Bonds’ arms are slightly bent and have nearly reached full extension forward.
    6. Bonds’ hands are positioned in such a way that the barrel is below them.
    Today, Paul Goldschmidt uses mechanics quite similar to Bonds and Williams.
    Take care, and keep up the great work / analyses!
    Best Wishes,
    QuotidianPerfection

      The filmer says B Bonds has no weight shift, I would, he has great weight shift! Look at where his body is when his fists hits the lowest spot in his attack and starts his launch by stepping forward 5 > 10 inches that is moving your entire body forward < so really great weight shift...Perfect and his fists stays inside the ball and upon hitting the ball the bat is moving probably 15 degrees upward.
      The fewest strike outs of all the all time great hitters, period! And as so called enhancement drugs, strangely does not enhance your hand eye coordination, the whole drug bull is just a scam against Bonds! Because if let us say between 1980 and 2010 - 50% of all players used some kind of enhancement and only maybe 5 > 10 made a difference, it would not be an effective drug - in medicine. You still have to have great reaction and hand eye coordination hit the ball and succeed at this level....Like Trump says. It Is a Hoax, Writers and Haters Fraud, Fake News...!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes, we all know Barry Bonds' real secret... but I'd still take hitting lessons from him just as I would still take cycling lessons from Lance Armstrong. All major league hitters have their quirks and idiosyncrasies, but what I admire about these PSB videos is how they focus on the basics. Ted Williams said to always keep two hands on the bat, but you hardly see any big league players doing that anymore. This series does a good job at keeping it simple while allowing for individual characteristics. I think Ripken would approve.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 лет назад +2

      Karie Miller Hey there again Karie! Bond's had an extremely efficient swing, meaning there was very little wasted movement. This translates into the position you mentioned with his head.
      Bond's had small head movement during his swing which allowed him to see the ball better being as his eyes weren't moving around and having to work harder. He does, however, still get an adequate wight shift, maybe not ideal in this particular swing being as his back foot didn't get very light, but still really good.
      Now there are some guys who do will with quite a bit of head movement as well, so it's not an absolute in the baseball swing to keep our head still. (Would also take away from some athleticism)
      As far as my personal preference, little head movement and extremely efficient hand position (and quickness) leads to a very efficient swing!
      Thanks again for the comment! If you have any other questions on this or anything else just let me know!

But good video props!👏🏼

    • @BaseballJunkie

      Yes, he said that. I saw the same Yelich video. Which is weird cause every single analysis of Bonds swing shows him doing otherwise. 🤷🏻‍♂️ He gets on plane way before the ball gets to his front foot and it’s emphasized by his left arm ‘chicken winging ’ hard. You can see it clearly at the 3:49 ish mark. Yes I get it, all hitters come top to bottom, it’s simple physics, it’s just depends when in time that happens. So for Bonds it’s more of do as I say and not as I do type thing I guess.

    first, the camera position is of center, so forget that imaginary wall theory. He is keeping his shoulder in but these massive pecs prevent him from getting his hands behind his shoulder. Check Griffey's hand position. Second, the real reason of Bonds' good contact consistency, is that he is able to keep his swing as steady and direct as possible because his body doesn't move that much during his swing, almost no dive, no jump(lunge), high torque(lateral twist of the hips) and level plane of the bat through the ball, and minimal head movement. With a swing like that, you just wait for the ball as long as possible, and cut directly through the ball..

    • @mcbeavis6380
      @mcbeavis6380 5 лет назад

      I couldn’t agree more. Hitting mechanics are much simpler than a lot of people make them out to be. As you’ve all but noted, the key IS actually to make the swing as simple and non-turbulent as possible. This is why I believe Harper is struggling so much right now. His swing is impossibly large. Huge step, huge coil with the arms, head tilts to the side, and feet come off the ground... this is fine if you’re doing a homerun derby, or trying to see how far you can hit soft toss, but this doesn’t cut it against major league pitching. The hardest part of hitting live pitching is actually hitting it - and hitting it well. If a strong guy can square up a pitch, it’s going to go out whether they swing with all their might or not. This is why guys like Barry Bonds and Daniel Murphy have had so much success while limiting strikeouts. Get a smaller bat, shorten up and stop acting like hitting a baseball is similar to hitting the weight room - bigger isn’t always better.

    Why do we assume that he hits that ball so hard despite having weight on his back foot, rather than “because” of it. He is almost like those hammer throwers in the Olympics, that use centrifugal force to achieve maximum distance. He uses that to get the barrel launched into the ball. His body is the fulcrum, which is slighted tilted back on contact to create the optimal launch angle.
    The front foot stops the transfer of weight forward, so that the applied force to follow can all be applied up through the body from the ground, up through the barrel. When a car comes to a stop gradually, the force is dissipated gradually, so the objects in the car don’t get propelled forward as it does when you slam on the brakes or hit a wall. The front foot is the brakes, but we don’t want the force to transfer in a straight line. We want centrifugal force, applied to the bat which has to turn before it gets into position to impact the ball.

    He doesn't have a perfect weight shift? How? His key to power and consistently hitting the ball solid is his rotation and staying back on the right foot. If he were to slide his weight towards the target instead of rotate and stay back on his right side he wouldn't of been able to hit the ball as far as he did.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 лет назад +1

      +John Meany Hey John, thanks for the question!
      Barry was an excellent hitter, although his weight shift was less than ideal. Barry's power came from his ability to make great contact on the ball and physical strength.
      If someone who wasn't as big and strong as Barry tried to hit the same way, they would have more trouble hitting the ball out of the park if copying this particular weight shift.
      Ideally, the weaker hitter will have to shift the majority of his/her weight into the front leg and as a bi-product the back foot will have very little to no weight on the ground.
      There are many examples of hitters performing this weight shift. (Harper, Pujols, Stanton, Bautista etc...)
      The point of the video was showing the value of great contact.
      Hope this answers your question! Thanks for watching and commenting! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    • @johnmeany541
      @johnmeany541 8 лет назад +2

      +Pro Speed Baseball Ken Griffey Jr. had a very similar action to Bonds and he definitely wasn't as strong him. Still managed to hit the ball pretty much just as far as Bonds. The key to his power and speed is because he rotated very well. A guy like Hank Aaron wasn't as strong as Barry but still managed to be one of the best if not the best power hitter of all time. He too had a similar action to Bonds. If you waste time sliding towards the target then you can't produce as much speed as you would if you rotated. It is up to your arms then to produce most of the speed and you will lose a lot of distance that way.

    • @johnmeany541
      @johnmeany541 8 лет назад +1

      +Pro Speed Baseball I just found it funny that you said he has an improper weight shift especially on this swing since he hit one of the farthest balls ever hit in Yankees stadium.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 лет назад +1

      Improper, probably wasn't the best word to use. We did say in the video "less than ideal weight shift" or something along those lines.
      That being said, a "perfect" weight shift isn't needed to hit a ball hard/far.
      Barry did so many good things in his swing, also was extremely strong and explosive. By being the physical hitter and having good mechanics everywhere else, his weight shift didn't need to be perfect.
      I would say he had a good weight shift, just not ideal when looked at in a 2-dimensional perspective.
      There are many good hitters without ideal weight shifts, and there are good hitters who have great weight shifts.
      Again, the essence of the video is to show how powerful proper hand positioning is in the swing.
      Hope this helps clear things up!

      You are most welcome! He did have great hip movement in his swing. This video was simply focused on how good his hand positioning was... When you hit that many home runs you tend to do a few things right!

    The back leg is fulcrum, around which the body turns. The centrifugal force generated is a legitimate way to create power. Stop telling people that Barry is not optimizing his power, just because he’s not doing what you teach. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

    All this talk about roids this roids that let me see you get a juice head from the gym and give him a bat and let's see him hit 800 homeruns I'm a Dodgers fan for crying out loud! lol I hated Bonds but you guys are too cruel and half are you aren't even talented so type on keyboard warriors cuz in my opinion the guy still had one of the best swings in the game!

    A 60 to 70 mph hit will leave any ballpark? Those guys are hitting balls 100mph plus dude. And then launch angles go into play. A ball hit 60 to 70 mph won't get out of a big league park

      If your swing is 75 miles an hour and you hit a 95 mph fastball with great contact is what he’s saying

    • @philipfabian9280
      @philipfabian9280 6 лет назад

      bat swing can be 70 mph but exit velocity could still top in the high 90s or 100+ mph. You got to keep in mind that the ball is a bit elastic and essentially bounces off the bat

    Kid: How do you hit with power? Whats your secret Mr. Bonds?
    Barry Bonds: Kid, the one thing you should know is that you should always try to hit the middle of the ball.
    Kid: Yeah, but how do YOU hit homeruns?
    Barry Bonds: Uhhh, what'd you think? Steroids kid. They help. Use 'em.

    His hands look like they're staying in front of the wall because the camera is at an angle from the right. If you were straight on, he would be at least hiding his top thumb.
