My fathers name was Daniel and he had a very difficult childhood.
This song always make me think of him, especially since he passed a few years ago 💕

@@DANIGAL101 You're welcome. I know we all have different beliefs but I believe we will meet up with our loved ones again and it will be a happy time once again. There is heartache here for the present time but the good memories will never fade away and we can hold onto those. I can relate as my father also passed away. It has been quite awhile but he's always on my mind. I think a person's actions while they are here on earth is what matters, their heart and their soul and the good deeds they did. I will always remember my father as being so giving and adventurous. He loved to travel all over the place and bring us with him and he wasn't afraid of anything. I try to be like him but I'm definitely not adventurous but those are the fun things I am able to remember and enjoy about him. It sounds like your father was a very special man. Take care 💖🌸🏵️🌷🌼

“Daniel” tell the story of a soldier (Daniel) who returns to a town in Texas after fighting in the Vietnam War. In the small Texas town, the soldier is praised as a hero and given so much attention. However, he finds the hero treatment and the excessive attention given him very uncomfortable because all he wants is to go back to his normal and quiet life in his farm. He decides to travel to Spain. Hence the famous line “Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane”.
Yeah Bernie has said that the idea floating around, that the extra verse that covers the reasons Daniel left, that Elton cut somehow changes the meaning of the song is an 'urban legend.' There is a quote where he says 'it didn't say anything that the rest of the song didn't say.' I suppose he feels like the real point of the song is the younger brother saying 'I miss you', and the reasons behind Daniel leaving aren't all that important.

Sir Elton John is a true icon. You must be great to get knighted by the Queen! I've never been a big fan of this song as it's a little too soft rock for my taste. But I bet I'm going to hear it in November when I see Elton at Dodger Stadium for his last ever weekend of performances in the USA. Can't wait!
I always took the song as Daniel died in Vietnam and his coffin is being sent home to Spain.
Apparently Daniel returns to Texas after the Vietnam war as a disabled veteran. He can’t handle the attention and life of a returning vet so he escapes to Spain to get away. This is told through the eyes of his younger brother.
@@diogomori9624 I always took it to mean just that. But I guess Daniel suffers from PTSD. The song is sung from the perspective of his younger brother. When he has an episode, he's gone to Spain. His brother misses him and looks to the stars and thinks maybe his bro is doing the same thing.
Back before we all had phones in our hands it was really common to say before someone went away - whether on a trip or to war or school or whatever - we'll be looking at the same sky, the same moon, the same stars.
Or make a pact to look at the north star at a certain time and think of each other.
I don't know if that's what the song is about. It's what this thread reminded me of.

I believe Bernie Taupin wrote this about a friend leaving to go to the Vietnam war.
It’s about a guy that came home from the Vietnam war a hero but he just wanted to forget about it because he was traumatized so much by it.
Jayy like many others gets heavily into the lyrics. The beautiful keyboard play in the background has always been something I liked as much as anything about this song.

It is about his older brother going off to the Vietnam War yet wanting to spare his family and younger brother the pain of the atrocities that he's seen and that have scarred him for life.

If I remember correctly, the Bernie taupin's lyrics told a more complete story, but elton removed lyrics to make it more mysterious. I fond it best just to let the song wash over you and not try to analyze it too much
Elton told us at his concert that he removed the second verse to make it shorter not more mysterious. And then Bernie told him- you do realise you’ve just removed the most important part of the storyline 😂

Daniel is about our best boys being sent to Vietnam and dying and coming back in a coffin. There is another verse they took out that explains it. Spain is the final resting place going back home.

There is no real story to the lyrics. Bernie Taupin wrote vague lyrics so you can imagine whatever story you like.
