You really need to change your design: decouple the detection circuit from the LED circuit, for starters. You need to make sure that only a few (and when I say a few, I mean it) milliamps go through the liquid. So you basically have to generate a really weak current (

The one drawback as explained is electrolysis as one person has quite rightly said and the other,
not mentioned and carrying no warning at all is ??
" Soldering the battery which if you are not careful and apply to much heat too , which Ive done myself with these batteries
This only has to get too hot , doesn't take five seconds , sometime less and they will explode particularly with this types of batteries (nasty too)
Ejecting chemicals all over you, red hot chemicals and metal which is
enough to take your eyes out Attempting to solder to these batteries may not be successful
first occasions consequently every time to you retry the batteries internals get hotter and hotter which only takes once , twice
If you don't know thee things its dead easy to make a mistake which can and will cause a bloody nasty accident
This is why you never see these batteries soldered onto directly they either carry tags for soldering purposes or they 9/10 in
special battery holders because they explode on heat
Some this films on utube all look good until there is a a real nasty accident
He should have put a warning on this and hasn't , highly irresponsible , possibly not intentionally but never the less should have thought about this a little more
So Ive warned you !!

I don't think electrolysis would occur because only the negative terminal is in contact with the water and not the positive terminal.
So long ago now since I saw this post I can't for the life of me remember what it's importance was and so moving on and what ever comment I passed back then is no longer important

This experiment could be made safer simply by buying a battery case holder they are cheap and connect the wire to case holder after one can simply insert the battery into the holder. Much more safer and easier then soldering directly to battery the only other step would to consider is soldering iron put also in its holder to avoid the hot tip rolling off oneself in case accidentally touching. Other then that its a nice idea.
hi i have a question for you and i will be really happy if you will answer me i made this but i didn't use pins i use nails an when i put water in doesn't work but if i do it with the wire thaks for your time regards
+ajdin beganovic It is because, water is a very bad conductor of electricity. It will work with alcholic drinks only. Or you may add some salt to water to increase its conductivity, it won't be drinkable though! :)

how do u solder the battery
It's absolutely not recommendable to solder directly the battery, if you overheat it, it will explode instantly. CAUTION!!
